Tottenham's Berbatov, Anelka from Bolton - will Manchester United sign anyone in the transfer window?

Sir Alex Ferguson rarely dabbles in the January transfer window, and it looks as though he’s going to follow his instincts again this time round. At least that’s what he would have us believe right now.

Inevitably, the Manchester United manager has been linked with almost every player this side of the Urals. Most notable names that keep cropping up are Dimitar Berbatov at Spurs and Bolton's Nicolas Anelka, and with Louis Saha’s horrific and apparently never-ending injury record, perhaps we shouldn’t rule out a move for one or the other.

Fergie did spring a huge surprise last Christmas by signing Henrik Larsson on a short-term contract, and the super Swede responded with his usual whole-hearted endeavour just when United were short of manpower up front.

This time “the boss” feels he has a squad not only capable of battling the elements and the opposition through December and January, but a squad he feels is just about the best he has had during his 21 years in charge and one that is quite capable of holding on to the Premier League trophy – and perhaps more.
