Next Friday will see the draw take place for the last 16 of this season's Champions League, but what should be an exciting draw has been turned into a right bore in my book.

Gone are the days of not knowing who you could draw in the next round and every year was different. This year features 12 of the teams who qualified for the last 16 last year, and who do so continually. Only Olympiacos, Schalke 04, Fenerbahce and Sevilla make things a little more interesting this season.

However, it could easily have been PSV for Fenerbahce, and Schalke will no doubt be ousted by Bayern Munich's participation when they get their act together or cheque book out. Added to this we have Sevilla replacing Valencia - a third place to a Spanish outfit, predictably.

'With massive amounts of cash at stake the big clubs will get richer and richer through continual qualification and ensure the group stage is an all-too-easy hurdle to be negotiated'

If that's not bad enough we have the draw itself.  With four English clubs in it, you can't be drawn against a team from your own country (why not, it's a cup?) and not against a team from the same group you were in. So we have a situation where Liverpool can only be drawn against five of the other 15 qualifiers. Not an open draw in my book. The same applies for the other English, Spanish and Italian clubs.

With massive amounts of cash at stake, the big clubs will get richer and richer through continual qualification and ensure the group stage is an all-too-easy hurdle to be negotiated. I will make this bold prediction now: Next season's 2008-09 Champions League last 16 will include the following teams - Arsenal, Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Valencia, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Lyon, Porto, PSV,  Bayern Munich and one of the Old Firm.

Calls for a European Super League by the G14 should be welcomed by all. GO, I say, and have your 'Super  League' together. It will soon become boring after watching the same teams every season, just as the Champions League has become. It would leave the rest of the teams in the English, Spanish, Italian and German leagues in with a chance of winning something domestically.

When the Champions League Final comes around in May, don't expect me to be watching, indeed, if it involves AC Milan, surely the dullest European champions ever, I will be washing my hair or what's left of it - after watching the mighty Queen of the South.
