England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008 has yet again prompted cause for concern over the number of foreign players in the Premier League. The media blames this so-called crisis on coaches opting for foreigners rather than young English talent.
But consider this. For over 40 years, England have not won anything, and during a large chunk of this time, the number of foreign players was very low. So how can we argue that getting rid of foreigners now will help our cause? It won't.
Instead, maybe we should look at the players, you know the men out there on the pitch in the England shirt, and cast a critical eye over them. I'm sure when Steven Gerrard is on that field he is wishing for an English Javier Mascherano to cover him and John Terry is yearning for a Blighty version of Ricardo Carvalho. But they have to take responsibility for it as the England players who are responsible for the national team's demise. If we start looking for escape routes, they'll never learn that hard work equals success.
Foreign players are also cheaper. An example is two players, Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott who at 17 years of age cost £500k and a reported £10m respectively. And who has developed more? Arguably the Spaniard, who is hitting all the right notes this season.

a very good article. As long as you English keep cheating yourselves and believe this nonsense about foreign players destroying the national team and prevents talents to emerge, you will not win anyting for another 40 years. Maybe you should just accept that you are not that good after all. Some teams never win, like Holland, Spain, England even though they are good sides. Even Argentina have not won the WC since 1986. To work hard is the key. We live in a competitive world, in EU we have free movement of labour, why should England opt for favouritism? If I were English and I knew I were only playing coz the foreigners were sent home, I would be ashamed of myself. Competiton make you stronger. Get over it !!

We complain that foreign players wont let English players develop. If English players were good enough then there will be no need to look abroad. When England was looking for a new coach, why didn't they consider an English coach. The same reason why clubs prefer foreign players. No foreign player stopped english coaches from being good.

Good article however I as a immigrant living in Australia must have my own say in this argument. Firstly Australia and England are very similar or notable exactly the same... same mentality to win same mentality in selecting. Our biggest problem is that we are a open multicultural country. In australia and england no matter what they say... England and Australia focus WAYYYY to much on being physical if people understood that by the time it comes to being competitive in football most players are matured by then i.e robinho , messi, fabregas are all know capable of shielding the ball and not getting pushed around by other as they might have done as kids if they were subjected to the style england and australia play (I.E physical). What l'm trying to say is that you must fouc on skill these days not physciallity i doubt if messi, robinho or even fabregas would have made it that far if they started there careers in england and australia due to there physical nature... untill we put emphasis on skill r

the foreign players are not reason for englands recent failures if anything these player will improve your players as they are usually technically superior.Without foreign players in your league nobody would watch the premiership

There is no possibility of english born players improving at Arsenal if their opportunities to play first team football with them are negligable vide Walcott .
