Every time I watch Liverpool lately, they infuriate me. In past seasons, when we have signed players, the expectations that surrounded them has usually been far fetched and we have been realistically out of the Premier League title running by Christmas.
This year, however, we are managing to self-destruct rather than just not being good enough and that is even more infuriating for the diehard supporters. I believe the cause of this comes down to a very simple fact; some of the key squad members are not good enough. Let's have a look at some of them . . .
Like many seasoned supporters, I can only hope and pray that Jose Reina doesn't get injured because we are frighteningly short in the goalkeeping department. From what I have seen of Charles Itandje, he isn't even a Dagenham and Redbridge standard keeper, let alone a No.2 at Anfield. And we obviously need cover at centre-back as Daniel Agger seems to have dodgy feet and Sami Hyypia might have been quality a short time ago but age has clearly caught up with his weary legs.
Then we come to a player who, in my opinion, has been unbelievably lucky not to be sold by the ruthless Rafa - John Arne Riise. The more I see of the guy, the more I can predict almost exactly what he is going to do when he gets the ball, and if I can do that, a Premier League footballer will have no problem. He can't cross, can't tackle, can't shoot (I'm sorry, but having a rocket shot that is on target one-in-20 times doesn't mean he can shoot), can't beat a player, has no right foot at all, can't mark and can barely pass a ball.
How he has made over 300 appearances for us only Rafa knows, but if we can get the touted £8m for him from Aston Villa, I will be most pleased. And judging by the look of the young Emiliano Insua kid in the reserves, we should be OK once he bulks up and gets used to the Premier League.
Then we get to Momo Sissoko; living proof that being a good footballer is 50% down to confidence. What has happened to the boy? How can he still be the same player who demolished anything that was in front of him this time last year? I don't know whether anyone else has noticed this, but he seems to have forgotten what he is good at, and that is charging around chasing the ball like a man posessed, crunching the guy with the ball, then passing it no further than five yards to a neighbouring midfielder with some ability (be it Steven Gerrard or Xabi Alonso).
This season, he has done nothing of the sort as he has convinced himself that he can actually play football; big mistake. His passing is pathetic, he decision making atrocious and his tackling even seems to be suspect. To think we were quoting £20m-plus for him over the summer beggars belief.
In the striking department we have a number of problems. Dirk Kuyt cannot be called a footballer just because he tries hard. If that's the case we should sell him, get a marathon runner in, and save a lot of time and money in the process. You cannot be starting games for one the top four clubs in England if you are a striker and continually do not score. Rafa needs to tell him to focus some of that energy into putting the ball into the net, like he is supposed to be doing as a forward.
Andriy Voronin is very average, and I always maintained that his start to the season was the sign of an over-achiever, and I stick by that. Again, lots of running and not much ability. Then we get to Peter Crouch. I will be honest and say that I am not his biggest fan, but I do actually like him as a footballer and think that he could be extremely effective at a club like Manchester City or Aston Villa, but not at Liverpool.
It's the way he makes the team play which I don't like; we seem to turn into long-ball fanatics and forget that we have players like Gerrard and Fernando Torres who actually have some ability.
All in all, we possess some contractually-bound players who we should be cashing in on in the January transfer window in order to get Liverpool to the next level in the Premier League and start beating teams at the top of the table like we continually threaten to do.

The usual - talk rubbish about a few players who aren't on their best form - say we should sell - but fail dismally to offer any insight into possible replacements (name checking Insua doesn't count - if he was good enough yet he'd have been given a chance) Riise is part of one of the meanest defences in the league and had Ronaldo in his pocket for all of Sunday's game - can't defend ... yeah right. He was also a better attacking option than Kewell on Sunday (although that isn't saying much). Whilst Kuyt, Crouch and Voronin aren't in the same bracket as Torres they are all quality players who would be able to show that better with some quality service from out wide. Momo - I can't argue much - he's great at one thing and doesn't seem capable of improving any other aspects of his game so it would probably be best to cash in while we can. But again - who would replace them? Lazy, very lazy.

I agree with your opinion of our players and would hope that Rafa lets go of his hold on Momo and John. Except on Dirk and Crouchie. I think they still have a role for the rest of this season. Nothing will happen with them this Jan. and Rafa will probably hold onto Voronin until the summer.

Is the real problem Benitez? Players seem regress under his tutelage.

And i am sick of hearing howgreatr your team is justt because you were the team to beat 20 years ago. this article is bang on, you have 4 or 5 really quality players some good ones and a lots of average or poor players if youcan get 50 million for this list then go for it. agger, crouch, voranin, dirk ,sisoko, hypiya, riisa, kewall (its his fitness admit it) the problem is baring in mind youhave to find 17 million for a player youalready have (macherano) i doubt your board will find another 80 million for replacements, admit it your still a cup team

Agree with some points but very harsh on Hyppia & Agger, I do not agree there at all. Riise, Momo & Voronin bang on. I am a little perplexed as to what confuses you about his constant involvement, who else is there? (Aurelio has been injured). Why did he try so hard to buy Heinze? Andrei started well as sometimes happens with new players (Camara, Rosenthal, Clough, etc.) who then fade as teams put the squeeze on them and their limitations are glaring. Kuyt has really disappointed me this year, he is a striker and doesn't score, why is he there? I think keep him for Cup games and the lesser sides but starting against United was criminal, especially when so many balls were being pumped forward, bread and butter for Vidic and Ferdinand. Crouch should have started, Torres was trying to knock the ball down for himself, it wasn't feasible. Kuyt's first touch was atrocious and wouldn't Crouch's long legs have nipped in ahead of Evra for that goal line clearance? Again Kuyt was very slow. I completely disagree with
Kuyt was alongside Torres for Liverpool's 2 best performances this season (Newcastle and Marseille away) ... go figure.

Dont agree with your agger beliefs.. I think he's been absolutely briliant.. He scores fantastic goals (West ham, Chelsea) and he delivers almost every time. He's still only 22 dont forget that. he's the future premiership best defender.

If we can sell Riise,Momo,Voronin,Pennant,Carson we would have somewhat 40 million pounds.....with Masch deal 17 million pounds...we hav 23 million pounds....I have been impressed with Taiwo (of Marseille) alot..and think he can solve our L.B problem..With rest amount we can buy Quaresma as he can also play as a forward....and Kaladze

I dont think liverpool should sell Riise kewel and agger. All three are very good players. i dont know how he can critise riise. he is a solid player. And selling the players he mentioned wont get liverpool much money, to be able to replace them.Kyut could be a player to sell, he hasnt done much to liverpool and might be valued at around 8M or 9M and there are quality strickers at this price in europe. Why not sell pennant and sissoko and get funds to get quaresma for right midfield. i thnk it would be the best purchase for benitez. it would provide the stickers he has with alot of options and would show the true potential of their abilities

Liverpool just make up the numbers in the top four now

Two good points; on Dirk Kuyt, veronin and Pepe getting injured. But every other thing on this article is complete garbage. The dude claims to be a liverpool fan but seems to have a strange n off opinion on the team.

I remember shortly after Liverpool bought Sisokko and we at Arsenal still had Vieira. Benitez was proudly touting Sisokko to become a greater player than Vieira. I think that was a bit wide of the mark. I do think Benitez needs to be ruthless now in his assessment of which players are not good enough for a top European side even if it is with some of his acquisitions, which is something managers like Benitez, Fergie, Wenger hate to admit at times.
