England captain John Terry ended the game in goal after Chelsea goalkeepers Petr Cech and Carlo Cudicini were BOTH taken to hospital with head injuries during the champions' 1-0 win at Reading on Saturday.

An astonishing match saw first-choice Cech carried off after colliding with Reading's Stephen Hunt in the first minute. Cudicini took over in goal - but he collided with Reading's Ibrahima Sonko near the end and was stretchered off following treatment.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, who wants the Football Association to look at Hunt's challenge, said: "Both goalkeepers are in hospital and both were completely knocked out.’’ Of the Cech incident, he added: The ball is far from the player. The goalkeeper dives for the ball and grabs it with his hands and then comes a boy out of his head, out of his shape."

Terry said: "We're very concerned, they were knocked out and concussed. We just hope they are OK for Wednesday.’’

Chelsea’s victory kept them in second place behind Manchester United, who came from behind to beat Wigan Athletic 3-1 in the day's early kick-off.  Both United and Chelsea have 19 points from eight games, three ahead of Portsmouth, who beat  West Ham 2-0.

Chelsea’s winning goal came in first-half stoppage time when Frank Lampard's free kick was deflected into the net by Icelandic defender Ivar Ingimarsson. The champions had Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel sent off following a second booking - to be followed by Reading’s Andre Bikey in the 83rd minute.

Arsenal captain Thierry Henry scored one and made another as the Gunners beat Watford 3-0, while Liverpool were spared defeat at Anfield by a Craig Bellamy equaliser against his old club Blackburn.

Aston Villa striker Juan Pablo Angel missed a penalty and scored an own goal in the space of three minutes in the 1-1 draw with 10-man Tottenham Hotspur, while Middlesbrough scraped a 2-1 win against  Everton and Manchester City were held 0-0 at home by Sheffield United.
