My predictions for football 2008 are as follows:

Flexible ticket prices using established business practices, saving lower league football. Teamwork sometimes beating individual talent again, saving lower league football.

I always thought that football supporters were treated badly and sooner or later something would give. I find myself thinking this again and saying that there is no excuse for empty seats in football stadia, no matter how high and mighty the architect.

'Modern players can’t think on their feet and analyse a game properly, because they are overpaid'

People say that football has become too expensive but in 2008 they will say that there is no excuse for an empty seat. Sometimes the game will be boring; football is like that and that’s why it should be cheaper than the theatre. When the game is boring, perhaps the supporters will be distracted and look to the sky. The chances are that if they do this around London, they will see a full plane. Even on a miserable night in February they will see a full plane. They will realise that is easier to get to and from the airport than the stadium. Perhaps they will look to the left and the right and see an empty seat. It will happen.

TV doesn’t like it, the sponsors don’t like it and the players don’t like it. Pictures of a half-empty Wembley will wake everyone up and it will happen. If you have a full-time job you will be able to watch professional football. Not the game of your choice but top-quality professional football and at a price where you could afford a bad game or two. Believe me it will happen.

In the Premier League, the players are paid a lot of money. They deserve it because they are more famous than Robbie Williams or Madonna. I think that modern players can’t think on their feet and analyse a game properly, because they are overpaid.

In every year after 2008 the two philosophies of super-stardom and teamwork will compete against each other and both will be the better for it.
