As the bells chime midnight and with the sound of Auld Lang Syne ringing in our ears, we shall soon be saying goodbye to 2007 and hello to a new year. Will 2008 be the year of the Red Devils again, can Arsenal's young guns steal the crown, or will Mr Abramovich dig deep into that bottomless pocket of his and buy back the Premier League crown for Chelsea?

Can Paul Jewell pull off the great escape at Derby, will Roy Keane have to start throwing hair-dryers to get the Black Cats going and is Roy Hodgson the man to save Fulham? So many questions and I can’t wait for the season to unfold.

The biggest question of all is can Italian bulldog Fabio Capello restore national pride and put the England team back up there with the elite where we belong?

‘Going eyeball to eyeball with an official, screaming in his face and throwing his toys out the pram is not exactly the example the captain of England should be setting’

The first change for me would be the captain. John Terry is undoubtedly a world-class defender who would be one of the first names on any team sheet, but he conducts himself like a drunken yob on a Saturday night after one too many sambucas.

Kids look up to these guys as role models and the way he reacts to a referee’s decision is aggressive and he is not far short of a schoolyard bully. Going eyeball to eyeball with an official, screaming in his face and throwing his toys out the pram is not exactly the example the captain of England should be setting.

My vote goes to Steven Gerrard. He wears his heart on his sleeve and the Three Lions’ badge with pride, and he conducts himself in a way your kids can look up to. And, of course, he is a REAL world-class player. Every team should have a leader. Spurs have Ledley King, Arsenal have William Gallas, and these have the right criteria to lead a team.

I say start with the captain and then give youth a try. David Beckham should be given the 100th cap he deserves and then presented with his pipe and slippers to relax and carry on playing the pub league which is the MLS. So who should get the chance to step up? Manchester City’s Michael Johnson has looked like hot property this season and surely it is time to give Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor his first cap and fend off any other countries trying to snap him up through some dubious grandparent.

Jamie O’Hara at Spurs could be one to watch along with the new slimline Tom Huddlestone. Will Theo Walcott finally step up to the plate? Can Scott Parker make the grade? Will 2008 be David Bentley’s year? Will Robert Green ever get  his chance in goal?

Also, whose place is under threat? Aaron Lennon and Shaun Wright-Phillips have lost the spark that made them so eye-catching 12 months ago. Can StevieG actually play in the same side as Frank Lampard? Have we got an English goalkeeper we can rely on? Ashley Cole and Wayne Bridge are both overrated full-backs and is Michael Owen really the answer up front?

Over to you – who should be the England captain? What young players can break into the team? Who would you drop?
