Considering the problems Liverpool have had this season, maybe it's time for a change. Maybe not in personnel, but in manager.
This season was meant to be the one that overshadowed the previous barren league campaigns. It was meant to be the year when Liverpool stepped out of the shadows and took the league by storm, brushing away the inexperience of Arsenal, the confusion surrounding Chelsea and the arrogant Manchester United.
Lucas Leiva has not been given many opportunities. Fernando Torres has shone at times, but again there is the over-reliance on 'Captain Marvel' Steven Gerrard. This was meant to be the year when Liverpool proved themselves to be a CONSISTENT force, a team capable of winning their first title since 1990.
But it hasn't clicked. Liverpool have performed dreadfully against the big four. Draws against Chelsea and Arsenal, who outplayed Liverpool at Anfield with a 4-5-1 formation, exemplified the fragility of Rafa Benitez's team. Manchester United bettered the Gunners by beating Liverpool at Anfield.
So what now? Benitez - he's a good coach but is he an amazing coach? True, two Champions League finals in his short tenure have been impressive, but the first was the result of divine intervention and the second was bankrolled by the clubs wealthy American owners. This is why Liverpool need a raw managerial talent - Steve McClaren.
The former England boss could be the man Liverpool need. He did reasonably well with Middlesbrough so why couldn't he do the same with another Premier League club? Look at Sven-Goran Eriksson. It is a prospect that would suit both Liverpool and McClaren. He may have flopped on the international stage but at club level he is no amateur and he may lead the way for a Liverpool revival on the domestic stage.
Liverpool need a fresh start - they need McClaren.

Come on now, stop being so stupid. Mcclaren did sod all with Middlesbrough despite spending a lot of money. This article is quite simply ridiculous. I agree that Rafa is having problems in the premiership but I still believe he will get it right, Mcclaren would never be given the job.

I agree that Rafa should be sacked. I think he has been given enough time n money to gather a strong team to challenge for the title, but the fact that it isn't. His recent acquisition is rublish(Voronin, Leto, Benayoun, we can top class player n not 3rd class players who can perform week in and week out. If he says he is buying for the future then he should have done it 3 years ago not now. Results should have been coming now. Even acquisition like Voronin which he say is free cost the team money intern of his salary and sighinf fees, in addition he does not even warm the bench sometime. But Macca is not the man for the job. He is a limited guy in all section of football. He can be a good coach for a small team or an assistant manager at a big club that is what he is worth!!!!

how did the Americans "bank roll" the second champions league final, when the only transfer window they've been in charge for was this summers, and i'd hardly call £20mill net spending "bankrolling" when the likes of Fulham and Man City spent more money than us

Funniest thing I have read on here in ages. Worried that some comments may actually be taking it seriously.

Samir Brandao, you have no clue what you are talking about, the very idea is laughable and you have almost no grip on football reality, i'm wondering if you have every actually watched a game, judging by this article you are seriously deluded, p.s. why remove my comments can't handle the truth?

he's not smoking he's injecting... if this person had any idea J.M. would be a much better manager than S.M. i dont know what your thinking... firstly i think you need to watch the games we played against the top 3 again, we matched the oposing teams in these games but didnt convert our chances, i dont think you can blame R.B. for the boys not scoring. As for the 2 CL finals that was due to determination and hard work, not divine intervention or bankrolled by anyone. if that was the case then every final would be between real madrid, barca, manu and arsenal... i think you need to stop thinking and just enjoy the game even if your team wins or not.

by Graeme on January 04, 2008
LOL just how retarded are you? McClaren?????! Benitez does NOT need firing he'l get us the league, if not this year then next.
by Fash on January 04, 2008
"He did reasonably well with Middlesbrough so why couldn't he do the same with another Premier League club?" And Liverpool should swap one of the most succesful manager in europe the past 5-6 years for one that did reasonably with Middlesbrough??
...cos there's a real danger that people are still taking you seriously. I hope they are either being "clever and ironic" in bothering to address your ideas, or they are Man U/Chelsea/Arsenal/Whoever fans in disguise trying to embarrass the Liverpool fans by giving the impression they would take this seriously. But just in case I am wrong - get a grip people! Samir was just too impatient to wait till April 1st to publish this.

I think that Rafa should carefully consider his rotation /selection policy and be given another season before taking any rash decisions, should he then fail to bring the title home Kenny Dagleish should be approached to resume the premiership title challenge from where he left off. Period.
benitez has basically failed as a liverpool manager , not that i am particularly cross about that, as far as i am concerned he shud remain manager for excatly that reason.... as long as he is liverpool will always be an always compete for fourth... bit of a problem as soon as only the top three qualify for the CL (next season i believe)... waht he has been is lucky..lucky against chelsea, lucky against milan but luck wont get u the league only consistancy will.. for thqat u need a well balanced squad with either a major british input or at least youngsters who have been brought up in the english game...if u do buy foreigners particulary if they are latin, dutch or african, but u have to buy physically and mentally tough players..the likes of tevez, essien, drogba and even ronaldo...not fancy dans like alonso...i believe alan hansen coined the expression luxury players...lpool are full of them...on top rafa doesnt even know his best team especially stupid if u bot the majority of the players yourself...so yes l

You need to change the bong water NOW mate.
by piotrosh on January 04, 2008
if thats your only argument, then a iaasume u agree with the rest...this year they will be lucky to get fourth..if they dont beat the hammers in their game in hand they definatly have to stop worrying about cfc, thearse and united and will have to deal with villa, city and everton...i would love it ...for your sake get rid of rafa and get an a manager who sees the PL as priority...mclaren be perfect at least u wont bother us at the top anymore..anybody else and u have a chance..what about paul ince...

Its obvious to anyone that has a ounce of common that Samir Brandao is talking out of his proverbial! its true we r suffering from the backroom drama similar to a chid whose parents r divorcing! weve been seriously underfunded for a long long time and r playing serious catch up, i feel we need some old school liverpool blood as 2nd in command have heard gary mac's name being banded about this would be a good solution or if king kenny is available and up 4 the job then this would a better solution..
by Real Red on January 04, 2008
You are mad. United should take Rafa and give you Fergie. Rafa has more power in Europe than Ferguson and we want the European Cup much more than the crappy Premier League which is too easy meat for us.
by craig on January 04, 2008
number one rafa for united, what ever, i dont think even we have enough players for his rotations, but mclaren for liverpool!!!!!!!! as a man u supporter i welcome the idea i for one feel that he would do a much worse job then rafa, probably get them relogated and send the club in to self distruct, REALLY POOR ARTICLE
