Paul Jewell is having the same problem with Derby County that he did at Wigan Athletic - his team doesn't play until the final whistle!
Last season Wigan, under his management, lost a lot of points due to not keeping their foot down until the very end. It was a problem which nearly cost them their Premier League status, with only a last-day decider keeping them in the top tier and sending Sheffield United down.
Jewell is meant to be a bright young manager who wears his heart on his sleeve, but no club can afford to keep losing points ten minutes before the full-time whistle. The fans at Wigan lost heart with watching last-minute goals given away and I'm sure Derby supporters must be feeling the same way already.
Jewell doesn't want to be labelled as an easy-touch manager whose teams always leave it until the last game of the season to stay up - as he did at Bradford City.
Already Derby have lost points the team thought were in the bag because of late goals from Bolton (91st minute), Liverpool (90th), Newcastle (87th) and Sunderland (93rd). They also let one in in the 94th minute against Manchester United, even though they lost 4-1.
In his six months out of the game looking at what he could do better, Jewell should have looked at the points lost in the last 10 minutes of matches. I think it was reported that Wigan lost 26 points from winning positions; if they had held out, they would have been on the verge of a European place!
Jewell says he spent time watching teams train and catching up on a new training system, but everyone knows you play until the whistle blows, whatever sport or game you are involved in. Since his arrival at the JJB, Steve Bruce has made sure that Wigan play to the last kick and have made themselves harder to beat.
Jewell is already looking under pressure at Derby - a far cry from from the cheeky, sparkle-eyed manager who gave a fresh approach in Wigan's opening season in the Premier League. It seems a forgone conclusion that Derby County will be playing Championship football next season.
