Unlike some Liverpool fans, I am not calling for Rafa Benitez’s head.
What Rafa has delivered by way of trophies since his arrival, and the quality of his purchases (compared to previous managers I could mention), justify his position. Also, he inherited a failing side, and he hasn’t always had the backing from upstairs to buy whoever he wants at key times since.
Money isn’t always the only answer, as Arsene Wenger proves, but it certainly helps! Manchester United and Chelsea’s combined values, along with Wenger’s genius, will always be a huge obstacle over the season’s long haul. Avram Grant also proves that any muppet could take over Roman Abramovich’s fantasy 11 from Jose Mourinho and challenge for titles. 'Steven Gerrard belongs in the middle. He scores goals from there, it’s where you get the best out of him. He is an attacking midfielder, not a support striker'My faith in Rafa does not mean, however, that I blindly agree with everything he does. We could be doing better this season. I strongly believe he would benefit from the following ideas:
• 4-5-1 doesn’t produce many goals. Historically it hasn’t for Liverpool, or England for that matter. • Steven Gerrard belongs in the middle. He scores goals from there, it’s where you get the best out of him. He is an attacking midfielder, not a support striker.
One apiece against Wigan at Anfield was rubbish. Our record at Anfield this season is rubbish. We are drawing far too many games. Usually around 90 points wins the Premier League. We are currently headed for around 72. Winning every game from now on (18 left) would give us 92, and that’s not going to happen. So let’s learn from our mistakes and successes. The league has gone, but we must not be muscled out by Everton or Manchester City. A top-four finish is vital and another Cup would go a long way as consolation, yet again. As far as the league is concerned - DEFINITELY NEXT SEASON!

i agree that we need to play a 4-4-2 system and Crouch needs to partner Torres. Gerreard belongs in the midfield but i think the conusion lies with us having too many midfielders. Rafa got to make hard decisions about Mascherano, Lucas and Sissoko. If we lose Mascherano because a lack of funds then we have invesst time and energy in building Lucas and Sissoko into midfield generals. Take a look at how it works at Arsenal how Wenger has built that yound team that they believe they can compete at the highest level. Rafa is the man for us abd it takes longer to build a strong championship team and 4 years is not a long time. Take a look at Man U, Ferguson only got it right in his 9th year at the club and look how Man U dominates a game even when the team is not playing well. I alos feel that Hicks and Gillete need to put their money where their mouth is and try to understand how European football works. I have faith that we will get there. Liverpool's style is to play with out and out wingers and he needs to pl

i dont think sacking rafa is the answer, agreed that gerrard needs to be played in his natural postions, WE NEED TO KEEP MASH AT ALL COST, the fat american owners need to give rafa the cash to buy more world class players like torres, for me we are still to far behind the likes of MAN U etc. its very worrying when we cannot beat the likes of Wigan, Reading etc. I think we need a class winger, centre back and Striker, and we need to get rid of the under performing players, Kuyt needs to be sold, i can run around like a headless chicken for 90mins but you get judge on goals and he has not be producing the kgoods as well as alot of other players, i think rafa needs to be abit more crude and get rid of the rubbish

Personally, I don't trust Rafa to spend wisely, which is to say I believe he'll be replaced at the end of this season, or whenever it becomes apparent that we've either not got enough money for him to spend (i.e he quits), or when Gillett and Hicks scrape enough for his severance package. A lot of the money we've recouped has been selling players he's bought, at a loss, so no tears there. He's the architect of his own melodrama there. Our squad is severely unbalanced, with a surplus of central midfielders, and limited quality in defence. Our wide players are limited (or not, in fact, wide players at all) and our forward line features 1 frequent scorer and the second coming of Erik Meijer and Sean Dundee. Thank goodness we've got Pepe.

Its ridiculous to continue blaming Rafa for everything that doesn't go right for Liverpool. Manure lost to W. Ham and no one calls for SAF's head. Their is no way they should have lost the game, but SAF wasn't marking anyone in the match. I've won championships in college and we won when the team was confident in each other and played together. It didn't matter who was on the field, we were all one squad. The one year we lost in a final we were distracted and the other team was like what we used to be. Gerrard is good enough to play anywhere on the field and make an impact (Istanbul 2005). So are a lot of these other guys, but there is no magic bullet. Our defense has been great even though we don't have enough cover. The mistake against Wigan was from a poor clearance by Gerrard (he is human). I wouldn't count on the "fat Americans", do some research on Hicks history in Brazil. Not good!

Gerrard had his best golascoring return whe he played the majority of the season on the right so no, he doesn't score most of his goals when he is in the middle. We won't win the league next season and for a long time yet it looks like. Rafa has brought in some good players but considering the amount of players he has brought in, failure rate is high. Only he could see what Voronin or Zenden would bring us, it was clear nobody else saw it. Kuyt is glaringly limited and since players have gotten used to him he is painfully bad. Why aren't all these youngsters he has bought getting a decent chance? Some of them are at the clubd 3 years now and still no sign. Hobbs, what was he bought for? If he can't get a start yesterday, when can he? Our passing is pathetic, even mid way through the second half we were pumping long balls to no-one. Rotation is not working, say what you want, Fergie does not rotate as much as Rafa, he may use as many players but not every week! United have a starting 11 that barely changes, e
especially in the leaguie and that shows in their consistency of perfomrmance. This constant rotating and changes in tactics does one thing, causes confusion and leads to a lack of cohesion and understanding. Don't take my word for it, the performances speak for themselves.

Firstly, Rafa DID inherit a failing side, but just as much as a new manager would inherit dead wood of Rafa. Despite how awful some of the players were, Rafa had an excuse when GH’s signings didn’t perform. Also, the Olympiakos, Arsenal and Milan match in rafa’s first season showed that the 2004-05 team had heart and belief, if not quality. Oh and although I won’t shot off Rafa, I still much prefer him to GH…and yet, I can’t agree with the statement that Rafa’s transfers are any better than those of the previous managers! Face it people, our team this season is AWFUL! I’m a season ticket holder, and I can’t stand the lack of entertainment at Anfield. I wouldn’t mind if we were winning, but we can’t even do that. Between the years of 2004 – 2006, we DID gain on the teams ahead of us. Since then we have totally lost ground. Bellamy, Gonzales, Kuyt, Voronin etc etc…Masch and Torres aside, the business in the last two years has made us go backwards. By the way, Steven Gerrard is NOT an attacking midfielder
He is a midfield general who can play! But he is NOT an attacking midfielder! An attacking midfielder is what a classic ‘number 10’ represents, and at the very highest level, that is not Gerrard’s forte! Gerrard is an all action midfielder that would compliment such a player, for club and country, but that is not what he is. Why can people not see that?!? Gerrard could compliment the Zidane’s of the world, but he cannot replace them, just as they cannot replace him with what he is good at! I can see why Gerrard would be played there when Rafa first came, but by now we should either have a proper attacking mid playing behind the striker, or have two midfielders like Gerrard and Masch, complimented with two genuine top class wingers.

Remember the Arsenal game at Anfield last season? Rafa played 4-5-1 with Gerrard playing off of Crouch and we battered them 4-1. But I agree Gerrard is not a striker and should not have been played as a stiker at home to Wigan.

I simply cant fathom what should happen at Liverpool to turn things around. For everyone to say that we need more world class players to me is a load of crap as we already have them, that is why they where brought to the team in the first place. Rotation is a big problem as these players need to gell as a team and this wont happen with the continuous changes happening week in week out. Aslo i feel that the players themselves have a lot to answer for, there seems to be very little ambition about the whole team and this comes across in their demenour on the pitch. things deffinately have to change, is sacking rafa the best thing? i'm not sure but rotation has to stop and continuity must begin

Sold Lagon – I cant agree with the fact the we have enough ‘world class players’ in our team. The two genuine, genuine world class players who would get in to ANY team in the world are obviously, Gerrard and Torres. Reina, Mascherano and maybe Xabi are almost there, but they are young enough to be put in that bracket too as both will progress to that level. But then what? My heart would say Carra, although if you ask Man U or Arsenal fans who see Vidic and Ferdinand or Gallas and Toure week in-week out, they would probably disagree with that one too, and after that there is no one near world class at Anfield. Finnan is consistent, so we can give him an honorable mention, but seriously mate, that is it!

Most of the above comments places 70% of the blame on the rotation policy that Rafa loves. Frankly, i think that this rotation plan is a few years ahead of it's time and Rafa has not developed the correct system to employ his players. In 2007, they said that the in-form Barca would destroy us and they failed. They said that Chelski would definetly beat us under Jose, and they failed. This year we have about three or four definte changes to the team and ti takes time for us to gel. However, Kuyt, Voronon, Kewell, Momo and Riise need to go. We need quality wingers and one more deadly striker.
