This thread is just going to descend into 'my clubs bigger than yours' no it's not, yes it is' playground stuff. Why bother?
by Pre season predictions "spurs for the champions league" LOL on January 07, 2008
I dont know about newcastle or everton. Spurs and west ham are big clubs, not only in the UK but you can go anywhere in the world and you have to put up with happy hammers and the yid army (ex pats). Considering that all london clubs have to compete against each other it makes the achievement of spurs westham chelsea arsenal charlton orient barnet fulham etc all the more remarkable. st james park has 50,000 every week but lets face it where else would they go!

How can you include London's number one yo-yo club in with the likes of Everton & Spurs who once upon a time did actually win trophies? surely Villa, City etc need a mention?

Any club that attracts a big crowd is a big club, Yes, I am a Spurs fan, yes we are a big club. So in recent years it hasnt gone our way, but how can you tell it wont!? I believe the top 4 HAS to change otherwise the Prem will have too. It will be like Shu and the Formula 1 all over again. Move those goal posts!
Agreed, no other top league in Europe has the same boring old CL qualifiers every season

Well, I don't believe that glory for clubs like Everton, Spurs or Villa is "getting further and further from becoming reality". It's no better (or worse) than it has been for the past ten years or so. As to the future, who knows what that holds? Wenger and Ferguson will retire. More clubs might be bought by billionaire backers. And a number of clubs are building new stadiums in order to be able to compete financially. As to the definition of what constitutes a big club, it surely has to be a combination of history, trophies won, years in the top flight, fan base, current position, potential and financial muscle.
Bravo!

So an agent who has no interest in football apart from making money should decide who is a big club and not the ordinary fan who has been supporting his team for the past how many generations... What a load of rubbish. Would like to know what Dixie Dean or even Bill Shankly would have to say to some of these no good leeches!!! I believe the suppossed "big clubs" are Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham, due to their trophies and fan base and general history.

an for the record berba actually came clean on bulgarian tv with an interview about this transfer saga..this is what he said.. Reuters January 7, 2008 at 7:37 AM EST SOFIA — Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov is growing tired of the continued speculation over his future with the London club and wants to be left alone by the media. Berbatov has been linked with a move in the January transfer window, with his agent saying he would be prepared to leave if a big enough club made an offer. "It's getting absurd," Berbatov told Bulgarian Nova TV. "I'm fed up of seeing my name in the papers all the time. I think the papers went too far." "It's obvious that the speculation will continue to the end but I wish the press would leave me alone. I just want to play my game. "The worst thing is that I see 'my' quotes which I've never said and it's something that makes me feel bad." Both Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with a 26 million pounds offer for the prolific Bulgarian marksm

without all Clubs in the UK there would not be THE big 4.. think about that ! The only thing that would be good, All teams MUST play 8 home grown players. Giving young players the chance again !!!!
by jj on January 07, 2008
"Such hysteria seems to me stupid, I'm not worth so much money," he said. Berbatov, who joined the north London club from Bayer Leverkusen in a 10.9 million-pound ($21.86 million) deal in 2006, said he was enjoying playing under Spanish coach Juande Ramos. "I'm happy at the moment, we'll see what will happen. I know I can win trophies with Spurs." "We (Spurs) are working to correct our mistakes and I think Juande Ramos is the man who can change things. "He's very good as a man and as an expert, he can see details which are hidden from other people's view."

What a ridiculous article. The debate is so boring as most clubs can claim to be big depending on how you define big. Are Liverpool still a big club considering they have won the Premiership less times than Blackburn? Are Spurs bigger than Arsenal as they have won more in Europe? and are Chelsea a small club cos they struggle to fill their ground? In terms of fan base then the big 5 are Man U, Liverpool, Spurs, Arsenal and Everton but obviously that is not the case if you are looking at recent success.
Spurs are one of the big clubs, yes the league at the moment shows everton are in front, but the last two seasons shows they were not, its ups and downs for clubs like ours. Everton have some very good players who would get into the spurs team, but spurs also have some very good players who would get into the Everton team. Both teams are very similar, only real difference is spurs have more financial clout but havent spent it that wisely as of yet!
spurs is well behind everton
Depends what criteria you are using. League trophies won? Yep, Everton win comfortably. Overall trophies won? Spurs win, just. Financial muscle? Spurs win by a big margin. Fan base? Again, Spurs win. In the long term - and assuming that neither club is bought by a billionaire backer - I'd say that Spurs has the greater potential to crack the top four on a consistent basis. Simply because of their financial strength.

Up until recently there were five big clubs,Man U, Liverpool Everton Arsenal& Spurs, and what they achieved over the years and the support they commanded made them big clubs. A team like chelsea who were on the verge of folding before the russian came in, are not a big club but a rich one that has been going down a path that is ruining the game. If these clubs have got so much money rather than give silly money to these mercenarys called foreign footballers, reduce the cost to supporters who will still be coming to support their team long after the money men have gone, and Chelsea will be where they really belong in the Championship

to the everton big club, nice one im a spurs fan and for once an everton fan talking sence
by bly on January 07, 2008
Big Clubs, small clubs, big 4? its all a load of media fueled hype that has ruined the game. everton (my team) city, spurs, villa, west ham are ALL proper football clubs, christ, Wolves, West Brom, Birmingham City, are ALL football clubs. Get over yourself, prat! If you were to go to your local football club, and watch what was on offer, you wouldn't care either, your team is your team, and the sad thing is, too many people have forgotten.

everyone, please don't stoop to this article. We will all never agree on who is a big club and who isn't as its a subjective article.
"spurs is well behind everton" I guess its the other way round for education!

As an England supporter and Spurs fan I think there is a real need to fix Foreign player levels. Or we have like today the best League ( full of BIG clubs ) but a pool of BIG players that dont play together well and are hounded by the media ( also a BIG media )
by Steve on January 07, 2008
When oh when are people going to reliase that the number of foreign players has nothing to do with England failure at international level and everything to do with the inept and blinkered FA failing to invest in our youth and talent at a grass roots levels since 1966. In case you missed it we have won f all since 1966 and for at least 20 years we didn't even know what a foreign player was! Typical English blinkers - we lost - blame someone else rather than look at the real issue- because after all we are English and have a divine right to win everything despite the fact the whole game is run by a bunch of money grabbing, football ignorant retards.

Obviously Newcastle are a big club, 12th richest in the world, 11th best supported in Europe, broken world transfer records, seriously competed for the title on more than one occasion in the last decade or so, the only one of the four clubs who could ever dream of getting 50,000 average gates, and could get 70,000 with a spor of success, obviously that club is big. Everton could be considered big when small clubs like Ipswich and Forest could win trophies. They don't have the infrastructure or support to ever be a big club again though in the modern world. Spurs or West Ham big clubs??? Incredible statements above, two league titles between them, mediocre fanbases, never been 17 years since Spurs were in the top 4, 22 years since West Ham were - and that was the only time in their history. Without question they are two mickey mouse clubs, who the likes of Leeds, Sunderland and Man City have every right to look down their nose at.

berbatov is going, spud mugs. Maybe not in Januray, but for sure in the summer.
