The Dimitar Berbatov discussion has been ongoing for some time now, with a variety of different viewpoints on the future of the Tottenham hitman. Without a doubt, Berbatov is a huge asset to the Spurs strike force with only a few previous players matching his all-round ability.
He has, in the past, reiterated his desire to stay at Tottenham, yet the unnerving chit-chat concerning his future keeps surfacing. Berbatov himself has pleaded with the press to leave him alone, stating such speculation as being ''absurd''. Much of the speculation can be blamed on his agent Emil Dantchev, of whom the Tottenham man is becoming increasingly tired - and to be honest, so am I.
There seems to be a fairly even divide between Spurs fans as to whether Berbatov should stay or join a bigger club for a British record transfer fee of around £32million. I believe that Tottenham should not let a player of his standard and skill leave.
The main reason for this is that with such a role model at our club, young talented players worldwide may be attracted by the prospect of playing alongside a goalscoring phenomenon like Berbatov. Watching some of the games, he appears to act as a stabilising backbone of the Tottenham squad, as he not only scores but creates passages of play elsewhere on the pitch.
I am not surprised that top-class European teams such as Chelsea , Manchester United, Real Madrid and Manchester City are interested in signing him, as this only proves his quality to the world. In my eyes Berbatov has been something akin to Jurgen Klinsman. Given time he would surely become a Spurs legend, like other big names in the past.
On the other hand, some Spurs fans believe that the money could be best spent on other areas of the squad in need of desperate transition, particularly the defensive areas and midfield. With the extra added threat of Berbatov leaving the Lane, Spurs have already lined up Valencia superstar David Villa and Swede Johan Elmander as possible replacements.
It is believed that if Berbatov leaves then Lyon striker Karim Bezema is very keen on a move to Tottenham. The 20-year-old French international has an impressive goal tally in the French League and has also featured for his country on many occasions.
Should Berbatov leave (which is uncertain), I would like to see Villa try to push Spurs into a top-four spot and his fast-paced attacking style would suit the English game greatly. With the January transfer window still wide open, Spurs are in need of a new defence and minor alterations to the midfield areas. Ramos is said to want to add Espanyol defender Dani Jarque to the squad, as well as doing business with Cardiff City already for the signing of 18-year-old Chris Gunter.
Barcelona starlet Giovanni Dos Santos is believed to be in contention for a move to Spurs with, Chelsea and Manchester United also chasing the talented 18-year-old. With such a strike force at the Catalonian giants including Thierry Henry, Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o, Bojan, Ronaldinho and Eidur Gudjohnsen, his chances are restricted greatly. I think a fee of around £15m to £20m would land him.
Whatever Berbatov decides to do, I think there will be advantages either way. However, should he depart to another club, it should be of his own accord, and not his agent's.

of course he has to stay. 30 million wont get you a great deal. imagine if we still had carrick this year.. its pointless to sell your best assets to build a team, whats the point in building if youre buying mediocre talent to replace 30 million stars? And if you believe every newspaper then we have every striker in the known universe lined up in the Summer.

I dont see the point in keeping him now tbh- if he really wants to sell out and play for a "big", soulless club like utd etc, then at least try and sell to real madrid or Barca and try and get some decent players in return - £30m is worthless when theres noone to buy.

I agree in the most part with you Luke, except that Manchester City are not a big club, they have had a good start to the season with Sven at the helm but look at where they have been for the last five years..... struggling for premiership survival. But thats another topic for debate! :) With regards to Berbs, he needs to publicly dismiss his agent, if he wants to stay at Spurs and does not want to leave then he should have his agent declare this if he will not do it himself. Perhaps, all this is a ploy to re-negotiate his pay deal (a bigger club wants me so give me more money because i want to stay! syndrome). I would really like him to stay, i think that Defoe should stay also. The strike partnership should work around Defoe, Berbs and Keane. I believe that Defoe and Berbs up front and Keane sweeping up in an offensive midfield position with Lennon tearing up the wings. Having £30million for selling Berbs would indeed allow for some new players but are they going to be as prolific as Berbs? I doubt it.

If Spurs are the reach the dizzy heights of the Top 4 then they obviously need to keep hold of their top stars, surely the fact that Man U and Chelsea are keen on Berbatov proves he is world class. If we were to lose him what sort of message does that send out, especially if we sell to teams we are plaining to compete with in the coming years? If we really are to progress we need to sell the dead wood Ghaly,Routledge,Staltari,Lee & the vastly over rated Bent and spent the returns on one or two established defensive and midfield players, we certainly have enough youngster for the foreseeable future.

id sell berba hes an idol sh*t and david villa is a much better finisher than him and defo although i do like defo alot... i say let utd have him in part exchange to bring carrick back and maybe wes brown too if chimps on his way out oh and plus 10 mill as well ... cisse is available too he would make a good addition if his legs fixed up good strong and pacey then bent can go too if the hammers are stilll willing to splash the cash our front line is lacking pace when defoe dont play so im all for changing the whole lot...

Are some of our so called fans, lets sell the best and biggest assest of the club, and replace hime with?. yeah really well thought out. Every new manager has different ideas and plans, but the one thing they should have in common is a desire to make us a 'top' side, and that cannot happen without quality players such as Berbatov. We got good money for Carrick, but so what! with hindsight would you have kept Carrick, of course you would
