I think the Scots have every right to shout about the improvement that's been made in the standard of football over the last few years. Scottish teams are doing better at both club and international level and people are actually starting to take them seriously. I must say however, that this by no means makes the SPL worthy of any significant respect. The top players in the SPL would hardly ever get into the reckoning in the EPL, Italian or Spanish leagues. Time after time, we see players deemed to be lacking in quality for the English league go to Scotland and become superstars. We have to face the facts and accept that the SPL is nowhere near Europe's elite as it fails to attract the top talent and the Global following of Europe's major leagues, especially the Premiership. As for Celtic beating Barcelona, it doesn't make any difference unless Scottish football raises its collective levels of quality.

I have to say it's true. The SPL has a significantly lower level of overall quality than Europe's top leagues. Celtic having a good run in the CL won't change that. Besides, most of the players in Celtic/Rangers teams would not make it into any of England's top clubs. In fact, many have found success in Scotland after failing in England.

Isn't it funny how the title of this article works just as well if you substitute the first half of the sentence for "When pigs fly" or "When hell freezes over"?

I think with the defence you have at the moment any talk of beating Barca is just hot wind blowing out your hoops. Seriously if you have such a glorious squad that can compete with the top clubs in the world then what about your away form? Dismal to say the least, you are counting on home form but you cant win em all! We welcome the chase!!!

however, English teams have appeared in the last three finals, out of the last 12 semi-finalists (3 seasons, 4 teams per season) How many, off the top of your head have been Scottish and how many English, I'm thinking 0 for Scotland and let's see 7 for England. Scottish football may be becoming more enjoyable to watch but it's no where close to challenging in Europe than English football is. I'm a Gers fan in Scotland, though actually a Liverpool fan but I wish Celtic all the best in their games against Barca, being organised defensively and making the most of their mistakes is the key (obviously) good look but I've said before I think they will beat you home and away with the defence you have and the attacking options they have.

Celtic will get pumped by Messi and co, they scraped through one of the poorest performing groups in the tournament. Benfica where nothing special as where Shakhtar and Meelan where awfull in the group stages. 1-1 at Parkhead 3-1 in Spain.
You mention that Barca are a country mile behind Madrid in La Liga and you are right. That makes me even more worried for you! Like I have said I am a Liverpool fan and if you can't win the league (which we can't!!!!) then winning the CL is as best as you can get. Sorry mate. Oh, also, this has been the best article I have read on this site in ages.

What a load of nonsense this article is. It is not so long ago that Rangers cuffed them on the last day of the champoinship and made the lot sick as parrots. Oh how that hurt. This year however it will be rangers by 9 points. As for Barcelona....Ha Ha Ha. Nae chance for the tims

At least us Scots are starting to nurture a "scottish" league as opposed to some intercontinental shenanigans. Yeah - the English league is among the best on the planet - but at what cost? your national team is a collection of overpaid donkeys due to the fact you have so many foreign players saturating your talent pool. So - enjoy your best league in the world but I bet us Scots qualify for a major tournament before you !! haha

I think Scottish football is on the up and due to limited funds the nation has had to nurture homegrown talent and that is now showing. Yes the EPL is better, but it has so much more money at its disposal, so they can bring in better foreign talent, which also means homegrown players aren't getting the opportunity to flourish. As for Scottish players doing well in the EPL, I think you will now begin to see it happening a lot more, to the levels it happened a few generations ago. Think about the cash being offered to entice players such as Gordon and just recently Hutton. Apart from anything else the population in Scotland is what, a tenth?, that of England so of course there's less Scots in the Premiership than the other way about. As James said lets see who qulaifies in the next major tournament (probably both), at the moment I'd have more confidense in the Scots, echoed by England not wanting to take part in the 'home internationals' proposed for next summer. As for Celtic-Barca, Celtics defence have
been poor but it seems Strachan is addressing that at the moment. We'll just have to wait and see, exciting games I'm sure, by no means cut and dry for either side. Celtic will be there and have a go, so I'll be watching and supporting the Bhoys no matter the result.

Stay off the happy pills mate. Pleasing to see a two horse race?? NO it isn't, it just shows what a joke the SPL is that only two teams can win and you are talking about a two horse race and we are only in January? Celtic haven't a prayer of beating Barca and that coach, Ronaldinho crap is over a year old. Change the channel. I think Scot got it 100% right
EPL is pretty much a four horse race is it not (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United)?? EPL is about twice the size of SPL, so don't really see much of a difference in that respect, so I guess the EPL is a bit of a joke too then? If you're just looking for rise fair enough, but I wouldn't write Celtic off. I don't really care about Ronaldinho particulalry, in previous games against Celtic his performances have been poor. We'll treat Barca as a dangerous team, and go out with every intention of minimising their many threats, but we'll be playing for a win.
by Paul on January 09, 2008
It's the standard of my team, Celtic that i always look at, not the standard of the SPL which is poor. Some English club supporters think that giving Celtic, or to a lesser extent Rangers some credence is tantamount to saying that the SPL is a strong league! Or that those who argue that Celtic and Rangers are as big as the Man Utds and Liverpools are saying we play in a good league !It isn't but who cares, Celtic would currently finish mid-table in England this season, after two years of big TV money injections we would be challenging for the title itself. I suppose most of you guys are just too thick to understand that...

Don't forget that we have beaten Barca over two legs before when no one gave us a breeze. And I know you don't want to admit it, but we had one of the toughest groups in the CL and got through, unlike Rangers who kicked their way through the 90 minutes of their away game in Barca. Smell the glove pal.

Celts only scraped past Kilmarnock with a deflected own goal. Previous recent performances including defeat at home to St Mirren will hardly have Rijkaard n Co quaking in their boots. The audacity of some Parkhead followers would choke a hippo!!
by Jack on January 25, 2008
Tbh Neil I think Celtic played strong enough that they would have got a goal even if they OG hadn't happened I watched the match and Celtic controlled it the whole time.
