...playing football, Stuart Pearce, Ron Harris, Terry Butcher, Martin keown etc, but when one of the above tells you he s*** himself when confronted by another player then you have to really admit he probably was the hardest man to ever play the game and that gentleman is Tommy Smith of Liverpool!

I'm a Celt but I'd have to say as I player i saw playing for Liverpool and rangers, Graeme Souness would have to be one of the hardest players I've seen in the flesh. Another would have to be Roy Keane who was at times mental.

do you mean hard, (Dave Mackay)or dirty (Chopper Harris, Julian Dicks)?? It's not necessarily the same thing!! Dave Mackay is the beat I've seen, Jones, Savage are just crap dirty players.

Has to be The Big Barn Door Dave Mackay, never got to see him play live but have seen video's of him tackling like an avalanche.

Without doubt it has to be David Ginola, he looked menacing in that shampoo ad. Second has to be David Beckham, any non-scotsman that could walk around in public wearing a skirt must be hard!

...Duncan Ferguson. End of.

I'll admit i am bias being a blue but i genuinely feel Duncan Ferguson was a hard man. Its all well and good acting tough, being dirty etc when you have the ref, team mates and ultimately the police to stop you getting your head kicked on the pitch (graham le saux anyone?). Off the pitch the big fella was a real handful. From acosting two burglers whilst bollock naked, breaking ones arm as they tried to make an escape then knocking seven bells out of the other whilst waiting for the police to arrive. Spending time in jail for a violent crime. Breaking Stan Collymores nose in a night club for 'being lippy. The list goes on without mentioning the many supposed football 'hardmen' that have been set straight by him one the pitch, Vinne Jones, Neil ruddock, Paul ince etc etc.. He may not have been the hardest ever but in a game increasing filled with spice boy types he was the games very last genuine hardman.... just ask Stefan Freund!
most of the Wimbledon team of the late 80's early 90's. jones, hatter, fashanu i forgot the name of there striker, the biggest headcase of the lot as endorsed by Vinny Jones! Ah thats it, Mick Harford another legend!

By far the winner would be a right back by the name of Ralph Butcher who play for Tottenham in the forties. Not that many would know the name but take my word in today's game he would got a red card in the kick about before the game.

Graham Roberts and Razor Ruddock two of Spurs greats in recent times
