Since David Beckham's departure to LA Galaxy, Real Madrid have spent a small fortune trying to replace him - so far without much success.

They paid just over £24m to Chelsea for Arjen Robben, and nearly £20m to Ajax for Wesley Sneijder, and neither Dutchman has yet proved that he is capable of filling Beckham'sboots.

Sneijder started at the Bernabeu positively by scoring  five goals. But after returning from a small injury his form has not been up to the expectations of  the fans nor the management. But still Bernd Schuster has him as his first choice over Robben and the inexperienced Gonzalo Higuain.

'Since they are the richest club in the world today, it is inconceivable that they will allow this situation to go on much longer'

Robben has started just two La Liga games and has been used as a sub on six other occasions. Robben`s dribbling skills cannot be to any other winger in the top flight, but he still has a long way to go to convince the Spanish champions that he is the Real Deal.

Since they are the richest club in the world today, it is inconceivable that they will allow this situation to go on much longer. They would love to prise Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United, but the English champions have made it clear that the young Portuguese winger, around whom they are building their own futrure, willnot be allowed to leave at any price.

So where will Real Madrid look?

Florent Malouda at Chelsea? Roman Calderon tried to sign him before the start of 2007-2008 season. But he preferred Chelsea to Madrid, so a switch now is highly unlikely.

Lionel Messi at Barcelona? Another highly unlikely move, especially considering the intense rivalry between Spain's top two clubs.

Nani at Manchester United? Not much chance as United see this second Portuguese youngster as the lon- term replacement for Ryan Giggs.

Aaron Lennon at Spurs? Still not mature enough to play in  a big club like Real.

Steven Gerrard at Liverpool? He has already dedicated his future to Liverpool and doesn't like playing in the wide position anyway.

Ronaldinho at Barcelona? A player who could move to Madrid, but having rejected Real`s offer in the past  it is highly unlikely Real would go for him again.

What is certain is that if Real get within sight of a second successive title, they won't be slow at fixing a crucial weakness.
