The signing of William Gallas from arguably the world's most defensive team sparked elation amongst Arsenal fans. At last we had a defender who could actually defend.

The fear of Philippe Senderos was wiped away and fans everywhere looked forward to an impressive 2006-2007 season that would, at last, have a strong and experienced defence. But as usual, the football curse struck again, causing Gallas a number of visits to the treatment room.

So, here we went again. Senderos in the back four, Thierry Henry injured, Julio Baptista struggling to find where he was and possibly the biggest problem, conceding first so as to push ourselves to the limit once more. Our defence was shambolic as Gallas looked on.

'Gallas's defending, alongside the ever consistent Kolo Toure, has been the foundation of Arsenal's success this season '

But in football, nothing remains constant. Gallas has returned this season as captain, leader, defender and occasionally match-winner (and saver). His defending, alongside the ever-consistent Kolo Toure, has been the foundation of Arsenal's success and his vital goals against Manchester United, Chelsea and Wigan have also made us forget Robin van Persie's absence.

Gallas has guided the team with his experience and desire to win everything, even if it is a lost cause. He epitomises what Arsenal are about.

Second place is only a way for losers to cover up their failures. This is the belief that runs through the veins of every Gunner, from Manuel Almunia and Aleksandr Hleb to Gallas and Cesc Fabregas.

So William, I hope you never lose this hunger and drive us on to success this season. Your true defensive ability will be tested with absence of brother in arms Toure, but if you succeed in making Senderos look good, you will be forever immoratalised in the famous red and white.
