Yes, welcome to the game's bizarre world. From certain behaviour and habits to the plain odd, then on to the spectacularly amazing, this is my attempt in compiling a list of what I think are the most inexplicable things that often happen on a football pitch. Here I go then - my top seven list of bizarre things that happen in football:

1. The corner kick: Ever wonder why players MUST place the ball right at the edge of that quarter circle and sometimes be told by the ref to put it nearer to the circle. Come on, surely a few inches back inside can’t hurt the kick? Or can it? I should consult Becks on this one.

2. Pick the ball out of the net: Common practice when a team still feel they can come back into the game. Still, it’s the opposing team who kick off, so does it REALLY save time? Often you see fights occur because the team who have just conceded want to waste time to keep their lead. So, if you’re the team who want to fight back, why bother?

3. Repositioning the ball: Probably the most common practice, almost every player must re-position the ball on a free kick or a penalty to a certain angle. I’m pretty sure the inventors of the ball have ensured that it is perfectly spherical. Would it make a difference if I kick it on the Nike logo side? I concluded that it helps the player mentally. My sister, who works in the advertising industry, says the sponsors probably told them to show the logo while taking the kick. Right…

4. Ball hitting the post: I would seriously like to know the odds of a shot hitting the post. Here’s my rationale on this. Take a piece of A4 paper, now draw a rectangle in the middle (you can use a thick marker pen if you like). Now paste the paper on the wall and use a dart to try to hit just the black lining of the rectangle. I swear footballers hit the post more often than they score goals and I’d personally like to see ESPN come up with statistics of goalpost-hitting-to-goal ratio.
