Here's my Team of the Season at just past the half-way point:

GOALKEEPER - Robert Green (West Ham): With Paul Robinson's fall from grace, the England goalkeeper spot is up for grabs and Green's form this season must put him in poll position to claim the No.1 jersey.

RIGHT-BACK - Glenn Johnson (Portsmouth): Has enjoyed something of a renaissance this season. His form is no doubt aided by playing alongside the experienced duo of Sol Campbell and Sylvain Distin. His confidence was shattered at Chelsea (see also Scott Parker, Steve Sidwell and, until this season, Shaun Wright-Phillips) but he seems to be fulfilling his potential and although thinking about England is a little premature he still has youth on his side.

LEFT-BACK - Patrice Evra (Manchester Utd): Some doubts were raised when Evra signed for United but he has put them to rest after an outstanding start to the season. Solid in defence and with pace to burn on the attack, he is an integral part of Sir Alex's side. Honourable mention must go to Arsenal's Gael Clichy, who has made the departure of Ashley Cole seem almost insignificant.

'Mooted as a possible England captain under Fabio Capello, he [Ferdinand] will want to avoid avoiding any parties for a couple of months'

CENTRE-BACK - Rio Ferdinand (Manchester Utd): Has always had the potential to be an outstanding player and his current form must make him one of the best defenders in the world. Accused of defensive lapses in the past his relationship with Nemanja Vidic has proved to be the cornerstone of United's success this season. Mooted as a possible England captain under Fabio Capello, he will want to avoid any parties for a couple of months.

CENTRE-BACK - Martin Laursen (Aston Villa): After several years, this is the first time he has really fulfilled his potential. His aerial dominance has been a key feature of his good form thus far and he has also become a prolific goalscorer, netting six times. Signed from Italian giants AC Milan for £3m, Laursen has recently stated that he hopes to extend his contract at Villa Park.

RIGHT MIDFIELD - Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester Utd): The Premier League has had some free-scoring midfielders in recent years such as Freddie Ljundberg, Robert Pires, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, but no-one comes close to Ronaldo this season. Over 20 goals already from midfield is an incredible return from a player who was once criticised for having no end product. This next half of the season will be crucial for Ronaldo. Many remember his disappearing act against AC Milan last year and he will be desperate to make amends.

LEFT MIDFIELD - Ashley Young (Aston Villa): When Ashley he joined Villa, some eyebrows were raised at the price and the old lines surrounding over-inflated prices for English players were bandied about. Almost a year since his move, he is looking like an astute signing by Martin O'Neill. He leads the Premier League 'assists' chart with 12 (two ahead of Cesc Fabregas) and has also chipped in with a couple of goals. Set pieces are a forte of the winger and this is testament to the number of aerial goals scored by the likes of Laursen and John Carew. Surely in with a shout of being in Capello's first squad.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD - Tim Cahill (Everton): Despite missing the first part of the season he gets in the side purely on the impact he has had since returning. Nine goals in all competitions at a goal just under every two games is outstanding and his part in firing Everton up to fifth cannot be underestimated. With Yakubu away in Ghana, Evertonians must hope Cahill continues to find the net with such regularity. His link-up play with Mikel Arteta is crucial and if both can stay fit then maybe a top-four finish is possible.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD - Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal): He scores, creates and defends superbly and is the lynchpin of Arsenal's midfield. The youngster has the potential to be one of the greatest players in the world.

STRIKER - Robbie Keane (Tottenham): Throughout the last season-and-a-half all the hype at White Hart Lane has revolved almost solely around Dimitar Berbatov but his strike partner has been almost as impressive, especially this season. Fifteen goals in all competitions, including two at Anfield, have him on course to score over 20 for the second season running. Labelled a nomadic player in the early stages of his career Keane has found his home at the Lane and he is one goal shy of scoring 100 in the white of Spurs.

STRIKER - Fernando Torres (Liverpool): For the last few seasons Steven Gerrard has dragged Liverpool through some fixtures but this year he has been ably assisted by the young Spaniard. £27m is a lot to spend on one player but to date it has been well spent. Torres' work ethic is outstanding and the runs he makes are intelligent. Combine this with his pace, strength and undeniable eye for goal and he must challenge for the Golden Boot this season. If Rafa Benitez is to save his job Torres must start whenever possible in the second half of the season.
