It's time to stand up to this chronic 'sit down or else' football rule

Football forums the length and breadth of the UK are steadily getting behind the idea of bringing back the terracing at football grounds. This could be just a small section of 2,000 standing, or implementing the ‘kombi seats’ seen in Germany, whereby you can stand or sit depending on the competition the team is playing in.

So, close your eyes and try to imagine your most memorable match, or most memorable experience at your club's ground. Done? Well, chances are if you are mid-to-late 30s, those memories will have taken you  back to pre-Taylor Report times when we had almost full grounds, with terracing (remember that!) - and when Bovril had some taste and pies had meat in them.

My greatest memories revolve around the old terracing. The spiritual home of most of the Dundee United support was ‘The Shed’. Built just over 50 years ago, it was simply a roof on top of the terrace. It was dry and warm when full, played host to some wild partying or ‘shimmying’, and provided the local optician with a stream of Arab customers looking for new specs on a Monday morning!
