“YANKS OUT DUBAI IN – IN RAFA WE LOVE” – read the banners displayed by Liverpool fans at the Aston Villa game.

How Sir Alex Ferguson must be laughing. Here is a man who has dealt with two separate owners trying to curb his influence over how he runs things at Old Trafford. On both occasions, Sir Alex put them in his place without employing either pressure from the fans or affecting the state of mind of his players. On both occasions also, he has been able to cement his status at the club by delivering silverwear, most notably the Premier League title which Liverpool fans so desperately covert.

'Benitez has orchestrated a hostile campaign against the owners to distract the fans from the fact that his rotation policy has failed'

It’s easy to see why the Liverpool fans have turned against their owners. It seems a clearly orchestrated scheme to place the anaemic Liverpool performances of late squarely on the shoulders of Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

Is Rafa Benitez to blame for the fact that Liverpool are 14 points off the pace two-thirds into the season? Not after Steven Gerrard has confessed that off-the-field activities are having a detrimental effect on the players.

And the reason such activities are having an affect on players is because Benitez wants them to. The manager has orchestrated a hostile campaign against the owners to distract fans from the fact that his rotation policy has failed, that many of his transfers have been a waste of money, and that his reliance on has-beens like Harry Kewell is getting Liverpool nowhere. The fact is, Rafa is not the manager that can deliver the title to Anfield.

It defies belief, then, that fans still proclaim their 'love' for Benitez. What on earth are the Liverpool supporters thinking? They are clearly behind Benitez in the manager-owner war, irrespective of his flaws. The message seems to be: Rafa, all is forgiven so long as we can get truck-loads of Dubai money in to fund your next shopping expedition.

The only way I can rationalise this blind faith is that Reds fans have seen Chelsea similarly resurrected by a Roman emperor when his cash bought two titles. But Roman Abramovich was wise enough to know that a tinkerman would not bring him success, only a special one could.

Jose Mourinho could not persuade the Chelsea fans to back him in a war with the Roman emperor. And despite missing him for a while, Blues supporters now have faith that the sturdy, down-to-earth, order-following Israeli anointed by the Roman emperor will soon bring many captives home to Rome.

If I were part of the Dubai consortium, I’d take one look at Rafa’s past record and reject the tinkerman to trust with my money. Like the Roman, I’d find a special one too.

Wait…isn’t one already available? I wonder if Liverpool fans will be holding up another banner - RAFA OUT JOSE IN – WHAT’S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?

Money first, trophies next. Love, just like the song goes, is a second-hand emotion.
