History was made in North London last night. Mark down the date - January 22, 2008. The white fans of north London had something to celebrate for the first time in nine years, beating Arsenal 5-1.
Tottenham progressed to the Carling Cup final on the strength of a 6-2 aggregate win over their fiercest rivals in an eagerly anticipated and well-fought game, which will go down among the all-time great matches of Spurs for a long time to come.
Having drawn 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium a week ago, anything looked possible. Midfielder Jermaine Jenas got Spurs off to a flying start just six minutes into the game, driving the ball into the net off the inside of the upright. Throughout the game, Spurs fans got behind the team and the Arsenal chants simply faded away. Arsenal always knew that the second leg at White Hart Lane would be difficult, and these pre-match worries were justified.
Arsene Wenger has fielded his supposed 'kids' throughout the Carling Cup and with all due respect, they were no match for Tottenham's experience and drive on the night. They were particularly lacking in defence with Dimitar Berbatov feeding through balls as if for pure fun. The Berbatov and Robbie Keane partnership certainly worked as the two players looked telepathic and a force to be reckoned with.
All credit has to be given to coach Juande Ramos, as without his strict training regimes and tactical knowledge, a win may not have been possible. Ramos has possibly found his true home at Tottenham and this is evident from Spurs' body language as a team. Comparisons can be made, however, between Spurs and his former club, Sevilla. It is noticeable now that Spurs are no longer laying in wait for attempts to come along, but rather the opposite. Spurs also no longer seem to be losing possession as much as they did during the Martin Jol era.
Arsenal fielded an experienced team, regardless of any player missing for the African Cup of Nations, and William Gallas was under pressure at the heart of the defence. Arsene Wenger and Arsenal fans alike claim that the Carling Cup is 'not a priority'. Even if this is so, such a grave defeat will come as a shock to the youth of Arsenal even in their Premier League campaign. Arsenal's young guns have finally been silenced for now.
Spurs fans know only too well that Arsenal act like a wounded animal when Tottenham go in front, but this did not happen, thanks largely to the great defensive partnership of Ledley King and Michael Dawson and the capable performance of Radek Cerny in goal.
Spurs do still need cover for King and Dawson, but the midfield looks far tighter now with Jenas linking play to the front men constantly. Aaron Lennon produced another sparkling performance, showing his true potential to the delight of the Spurs fans. For me, he resembles Jesus Navas of Sevilla in the way in which he cuts in and draws players only to out-run them.
As if four goals weren't enough, the icing on the cake was finely added by Steed Malbranque in added time, and Arsenal's impressive, nine-year unbeaten run against Spurs came to a grinding halt. Tottenham fans now hold bragging rights over Arsenal.
Come on you Spurs! And on to Wembley we march!

You have to feel sorry for Mr Wenger for getting it so wrong over the last two games with Spurs, maybe his squad isn't as good as he thought it was,or maybe his arrogance got the better of him or maybe he faced an opponent that won't get pushed around and knows what he is doing.Either way Arsenal lost and were outplayed which is not a bad thing is it?..maybe this will put an end to all the hyperbole surrounding this team..

I am still getting shivers from last nights performance :D IMO Jenas has to be the player of the game - i dont think ive ever seen him play like that before. Just out of interest, can somebody please set me straight about the final and europe.... If we were to lose the final, against say, chelsea, if they are already in europe at the end of the season- we get the uefa place right?

Congratulations to Spurs for playing Arsenal off the park last night. Despite the referees best efforts to the contrary and fighting among themselves, Arsenal were comprehensively thrashed. I suppose it was only the reserve team though...except for Fabregas, Adebayor, Gallas, Gilberto, Toure....Hold on a minute, my mistake that's the first team.... Yid Army!!!

I wondered how long it would take for you guys to get onto sportingo mouthing off. But surely the "glory days" are back? Now you will "show everyone?" You may not like to admit it but it was a weakened side, those first team players who did participate were there due to injuries with Hleb being the one exception. I can understand your delight, your first defeat of Arsenal in nine years is significant for you. As long as this isn't the start of your optimistic fans getting carried away as per usual (like pre-season and a hundred times before) then kudos to your guys for playing well as you deserved it.

Adz... You have to win the CC to get a place in the Ueafa Cup. Unlike the FA Cup

It was a great game well deserved, and Spurs can play like this all the time, hopefully now we can win the cup. I think we deserved a lot more, couldn't make it to the game last nite, so watched it on SKY. Commentators are very biased - 'oooh thats unlike Fabrigas to mislay a pass'. 4-1 down, can they come back now... hahaha no they can't they got truly stuffed....

Hahaha, Kids? Which kids? They rested one player...Almunia, and to be honest, Fabianski done a decent enough job picking the ball out the net 5 times. COYS!!!!

by Martin Jol on January 23, 2008
Enjoy it while it lasts boys - when you win the Carling Cup and the Gunners can lift the Champions League or the Prem? Congrats anyway - here's to another 9 years!
Nice to spank the Woolwich boy's,still it will be nothing compared to the caning that whinger will give his team this morning. There will be some very sore backsides methinks.I suppose he is glad they lost then!!

Next time kids
So the "glory days" are back excellent! I look forward to speaking to you all this time at the end of the season when you have done the treble! With regards to how I feel, not too bad. Its widely known the Carling Cup has served its purpose for us for the last few years, we use it to blood youngsters and give inexperienced players an opportunity to prove themselves. You guys needed to win this as it is your last hope of qualifying for Europe and that is still not assured. It also amuses me the way you guys throw in that Fabregas, Gallas, Adebayor played. In terms of the tie they played at most half of it! Its never nice to lose but surely it takes some of the gloss off it to know that you did play our first team on two occasions this season, and lost.

It was about time someone beat those kids Lets just hope, it's a Spurs - Everton final
