So, another FA Cup tie against Manchester United, another defeat. Those who watched the match from a Tottenham point of view will no doubt be feeling a little sore. Not at the loss - but at the result.

For the best part of 70 minutes, Spurs matched a full strength United in all areas of the park. Tottenham's goal was a goal. Not a piece of footballing genius, not a fluke; just a well-played, well-taken goal. The pass to Aaron Lennon on the far side was brilliant and they deserved the lead, having matched United - and even been marginally better.

The first United goal was seriously well taken and I applauded the strike. However, a Tottenham defender  should have dealt with the header better in the first place; even flicking it out for a corner or throw would have sufficed.

'After Ronaldo took the penalty and scored, the arrogance that beamed from him was reflected in the fans'

The second United goal was a penalty conceded by Michael Dawson, who hand-balled. It was stupid and Dawson got sent off. But it takes no skill, just coolness to take a penalty. Up until this point, as I wrote earlier, Spurs had matched United. Jamie O'Hara had kept Cristiano Ronaldo quiet with his passes falling short, being blocked and generally not being allowed to play a great deal. So the only thing separating the two teams was a penalty. Had the scoreline remained the same, would that have been a convincing win?

After Ronaldo took the penalty and scored, the arrogance that beamed from him was reflected in the fans. "God, I'm good" was the message he sent out, when up until that point he had done little. But suddenly you felt the atmosphere change and the smugness leaked around the ground. There isn’t a need for it. If you're winning, as United were then, you have the right to celebrate; but to suddenly start thinking "too good" or "game over" is just downright disrespectful. Excellent team football with the penalty, lads. Great passing!

The third goal was a gift. The keeper couldn't get down quick enough and let it slip beneath him. It simply wasn’t good enough. The irony was this happening at a time when I personally was thinking: "You know, he's had a good game".

I think 3-1 is flattering and that the decent United fans out there who saw the match will agree. Spurs matched United and United never out-played them. But Tottenham were sloppy at the back - the theme in much of their season.

Nevertheless, there is a small-minded minority who never saw the game that will pick up their morning newspaper, see the result and say: "Huh, 3-1. We're too good, we are!”

Tottenham fans can accept defeat to anyone, unlike the Gooners. United were lucky at times, as were Spurs - and we can hold our heads high. Spurs played the Premier League leaders and matched them. In fact, it was United who on the day had a bit more fortune. Now crack on and win it!
