It will take more than fans to stop this Premier League madness

The Premier League's proposal to extend the season to a 39-game competition looks like being a watershed moment in the history of the English game.This could be remembered as the time when total disregard of the fans' voice by the league's head honchos is permanently etched in stone.

The morning after the announcement was made, in an unprecedented union of opinion, sports writers banded together to deride chief executive Richard Scudamore's plans. In The Times, Martin Samuel chastised the "various executives [who are] no doubt dreaming of all the lovely global lolly that would soon be flowing through the game", while the Telegraph's Henry Winter argued that "the Premier League plan is… an insult to all those loyal supporters who take great pride in having been to every match, home or away, in the league". And the Guardian's Sean Ingle told his readers that "the flaws are legion, and obvious too."

However, despite all this noise-consuming column inches, as soon as Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that his voice of experience had been overlooked before the plan was made public, the reality set in that regular fans are virtually powerless to stop this car-crash from unfolding.

Some action groups have already been activated. Football 365 have launched their "Stick Your 39th Game Up Your Bollix" campaign, while the primary group leading the backlash is the Football Supporters' Federation (http://www.fsf.org.uk/news/news0095no-to-gam e-39.html), whose catchy slogan is "NO TO GAM£ 39".
