As far as ridiculous rumours go, this is a classic. Apparently Arsene Wenger plans on raiding two of Arsenal’s rivals for some top-quality players (various).

First up is Liverpool’s supersub Ryan Babel, who has of course been linked with a move to the Emirates before. These rumours were doing the rounds when the young Dutchman was playing at Ajax, but recently there's been talk of a potential swap with Theo Walcott. Now it seems that it’s a £17m cash-only deal, but let’s face it, this is probably just mindless speculation.

However, if you were Babel and you found yourself mainly producing cameo roles whilst the likes of Harry Kewell were deemed worthy of inclusion ahead of you, then I am sure you wouldn’t be too happy! Maybe Rafa Benitez just wants to bring the youngster through gradually, but I do feel that Babel is more than ready for an extended run in the team.

For the record, this story seems to lack anything in the way of credibility, so don’t shoot the messenger for bringing it to your attention.

The second part of this shocking couplet involves Man United winger Nani(various), another player who was linked with the north London side before going elsewhere. Now he is apparently a £15m target of Wenger’s.

Reports are rife that the Portuguese star is not totally settled at Old Trafford and hence may be happy to move on. Quite where the idea came that he might join Arsenal, I am not sure. I am pretty sure, however, that Arsenal are happy enough with their current squad - but that won’t stop the crazy stories from doing the rounds. I guess that’s the nature of the transfer market at present, it creates a huge wealth of speculation, only 1% of which ever proves even vaguely accurate!
