"At the start of the season I would have said it was completely unrealistic. I really couldn't see anybody else but the usual teams being in the top four. It becomes a bit monotonous the same old names at the top. So it would be a good thing if it changed. It is going to be very tight (for fourth place) but we are in the mix and we've got a chance." – Harry Redknapp.Redknapp’s comments came before Saturday's barely deserved win over Bolton at the Reebok stadium. While Pompey remain six points behind Everton who currently reside in fourth place, some excellent signings during the January transfer window, the return of an African star and a small amount of belief and ambition could see Fratton Park host the likes of Barcelona or Inter Milan next season. Redknapp is often described as a “wheeler dealer,” a bit of a Del Boy or an Arthur Daley. During this past January window it was easy to see why. Lassana Diarra was an excellent signing. The French midfielder has already scored two goals in five games since joining Pompey and was highly influential in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea last weekend. 'Jermain Defoe and Milan Baros give Redknapp more options and both will need no time to get to grips with the English game'Portsmouth also strengthened up front despite selling top-scorer Benjani. Jermain Defoe and Milan Baros give Redknapp more options and both will need no time to get to grips with the English game. Defoe in particular was well rested at Spurs and is eager to play every game. If he starts on a scoring run, regular goals from the diminutive striker could push Pompey into Europe. With the Africa Cup of Nations all but finished, Portsmouth were able to field Kanu and Utaka and should welcome back Sulley Muntari in the coming days. If anything, the dynamic Ghanaian midfielder showed at the tournament what a great player he is. With a great work ethic and a lethal left-foot, Muntari should prove to be a crucial component in Pompey’s push up the table.
David James made what Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas claimed to be the “save of the season” in injury-time from Bolton’s Tamir Cohen. The former Arsenal and Celtic striker then described James “as valuable to Portsmouth as Cristiano Ronaldo is to Manchester United and Cesc Fabregas and Emmanuel Adebayor are to Arsenal. He was immense.”

it would be a travesty if this no mark of a club got into the champs league. everton yes, man city yes, villa obviously, but pompey?? what an embarassment for english football if real madrid had to turn up at fratten park! pompey belong in the championship, not the champions league.

villa109, makes me laugh how you can comment this way on a team which is fast moving in the right direction (which is upwards). Portsmouth fans deserve every success they get, great fans, great club and i along with a alot of other fans would be glad for them. And if i remember rightly didnt Portsmouth just wip villa 3-1 at your stadium? lol, sounds like sour grapes if you ask me.

LOL at the Villa fan and thanks to the Gooner. Why not Pompey in the champs league? We thrashed you at yours and player for player have a far better squad, especially with the additions we made in the window. The boys are back from the ANC now and we can really push on.

typical villa fan thinks they are so better than they really are.like steve from arsenal said we went up to viia park and picked up three easy points.you cant even beat fulham which is pretty embarassing .at least if real madrid turn up they turn up to a proper city not a small town in birmingham.play up pompey
firstly, don't compare the second biggest city in britain to a tin pot town full of navy benders. secondly, what have pompey ever done of an note in football? ok, you won at villa park, but you forgot to say it was the first time in 30 years, so don't get too excited. the fulham game was a slip, as proved by saturday's hammering of the toon. as for having a far better squad, ld 'arry has got average players playing brilliantly. however, most were probably bought via a bung. o'neil will do it properly...if it takes time and doesn't happen this season, so be it. oh, to the arsenal fan....ever won the european cup mate??
sorry mate i thought the second biggest city was Birmingham not that little village called aston.as for beating the toon not exactly difficult we beat them 4-1 up there ..... enough said !!!! And if it wasnt for dodgy carson we would be going to the euros

this guy sounds like a liverfool idiot, just out of curiosity, when was villa last in europe (champs league)? Like I said like a liverfool fan living in the past and blinded by the present.

Champions for two years in row, FA Cup winners, runners up twice. Not bad for a provicial club formt eh sticks that is not part of a major conurbation. You may have won the league seven times but five of those were before 1900 !!!
by villa109 on February 12, 2008
poor jealous gooner. the fact we've been in the european cup twice and won it once is more detrimental to you sad losers who enter the 'champions' league virtually every year and still can't win it. it must be a london thing. to the pompey fan, aston is a district in brum you numpty, would it be easier for you to understand if we were called birmingham villa?? and fratten station, you forgot to mention our 7 FA Cups, 5 League Cups, THE European Cup, the European Super Cup aong with our 7 League titles. we may have won our last league in 1981 but football history doesn't begin with the prem league in 92/93. incidentially, where were pompey in 92/93?
