So, we missed out on Ryan Babel – well, I think if Arsene Wenger had wanted him badly enough then he would have been wearing an Arsenal shirt long ago. After all, he is a Gunners fan. Either way, in Theo Walcott I believe we have a player with a more glorious future, even if in recent weeks he has been less than spectacular.

At 18, the former Southampton kid can afford to be a little hit and miss. He is still maturing into a top-level player. OK, we have only seen glimpses of his brilliance at the Emirates but I am sure it will come. Babel – often cited by Liverpool fans as far superior to Walcott – is also a top quality player, but his performance against Chelsea yesterday wasn’t exactly mesmerising.

Comparing players can always be a little emotive and unnecessary, but these two have very similar styles of play. Babel arrived with a bang, became something of a super sub and couldn’t stop scoring. Clearly he deserves a first-team run, especially given the dross in front of him, like the awful Harry Kewell.

Walcott's season has been a little muted, but it is too soon to expect a great deal from the creative youngster. At least he showed what he can do in the recent England Under-21 international against Ireland.

There was always a danger that the teenager would suffer a burn-out or be adversely affected by the media circus that goes with Premier League football, but he does seem fairly down-to-earth and if I were Wenger I would use him sparingly for the remainder of the season.

A great many people perhaps expect far too much from such a young lad. I think it is far better to stand back and wait and watch the talent mature. That being said, I still rate him more highly than Dutchman Babel and, in years to come, he will surely prove me correct.
