All players go through a dry spell on the pitch every once in a while. This is expected; it is how they respond that will define their season, in some cases their careers.

I am in no doubt Emmanuel Eboue’s offence against Patrice Evra did not warrant a red card on Saturday, but it seems all Arsenal fans have abandoned Eboue because he has let us down so often.

Many fans have even begun to call for him to be offloaded in the summer. It seems at this time Eboue is the one Arsenal player we all love to hate.

'He has gone from being a true inspiration to an average player'

How did he go from one of the best right-backs in the world (2006 Champions League run) to a villain for Arsenal fans?

At the beginning, we could tolerate a little dive here and there but it is his relentless drive for the dark arts that has driven many Gooners against the lad. I must admit we have benefited from it on a few occasions. The free kick that led to Sol Campbell's goal in the Champions League final was a result of an Eboue dive.

He was also instrumental in getting John Terry sent off in the game against Chelsea but he seems to think he can make a career out of diving and drama. Sometimes he needs to just pick himself up and get on with the game. Constantly complaining, acting and carrying-on does not help his cause, nor will it win him any fans.

He has gone from being a true inspiration to an average player. Perhaps this is due to the fact he is playing in a new position this season but it seems he has forgotten how to beat the person in front of him.

I am not sure if this is due to a lack of motivation or because he is just not a true winger. Perhaps coming from a defensive position is his best method of play, but many times he just won’t get back to his position in time to prevent a counter-attack. Anyhow, I cannot see him replacing Bacary Sagna at the moment; Sagna has turned out to be the best right-back in the Premier League this season.

Eboue’s other problem stems from his lack of finishing; I have seen him in countless scoring positions this season where he decided to go for sheer power instead of direction or finesse. Maybe he needs a few scoring lessons from Emmanuel Adebayor, a player who had similar problems last season but seems to have got his act together.

Unlike many Arsenal fans, I still think Eboue is a fine player and a great addition to the Arsenal team. I doubt Arsene Wenger will get rid of him during the summer. Worst case scenario, he will go on to be back-up for Sagna, which would definitely be a better option than Justin Hoyte who was turned inside out during the Manchester United game. I can’t see him coming back as an established left-back at Arsenal.

The game against AC Milan will be one more chance Eboue has to redeem himself and his Arsenal career. Because Thomas Rosicky is out at the moment, I think Wenger will stick with Eboue for the extra protection against Milan; he hardly has a choice with so many first-team players nursing injuries.

So there you go Eboue, a good performance against Milan, maybe even a goal, would do much good to your cause at the moment. The least we can expect is to get by a few Milan players without falling like you have been shot, or you could even swing in a few of those signature crosses you used to be known for.
