The buying and selling game can be treacherous. Putting your money where you mouth is can more often than not end up in disaster.
However for every failure there are occasional successes so how about listing the ten best transfers since season 06-07 drew to a close.
Bakary Sagna (Arsenal) £6m from Auxerre .
Once again Arsene unearths a beauty of a signing. Pretty much unheard of before he left France for north London, but now arguably the best full back in the country.
Anderson (Man United) £18m from Porto.
May seem a steep fee, but could be worth a lot more if he continues impressing. Amazingly still only 19.
Fernando Torres (Liverpool) £26.5 from Atletico Madrid.
People scoffed when he arrived at Anfield for a fee many considered pricey, but I am sure most of those doubters have disappeared now. 21 goals in 27 starts tends to change people’s opinions!
Sulley Muntari (Portsmouth) £7m from Udinese.
A class act pulling the strings at Fratton Park. Playing a big part of their continued rise up the table.
Sylvain Distin (Portsmouth) Free from Man City.
Possibly the player of the year at Portsmouth. His defensive partnership with Sol Campbell has been astounding.
Martin Petrov (Man City) £4.7 from Atletico Madrid.
Chased by a number of clubs in the summer, the winger has been awesome for the Eastlands side, creating a large number of the goals Sven’s team have scored.
James McFadden (Birmingham) £4.75m from Everton.
I was skeptical about this move at first, but the Scot could prove to be crucial in Brum's attempt to beat the drop.
Roque Santa Cruz (Blackburn) £3.8m from Bayern Munich.
Possibly the bargain of the season. Santa Cruz took the big step of leaving the comfort of his Bayern spot and opted for a shot at the Premier League with unfancied Blackburn. The result, a goal more or less every other game, and a true team player and well worth triple what Mark Hughes wisely invested.
Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham) £8m from Middlesbrough.
Yes, it’s early days but this could prove to be a very wise purchase indeed. Juande Ramos needed some solidarity at the back and the purchase of the rejuvenated Woodgate has already helped secure silverware.
Fabrice Muamba (Birmingham) £4m from Arsenal.
After a season on loan the Midlands side stumped up the £4m for the permanent signature of the 19-year-old and it could prove to be the best £4m the club has ever spent. Cool and calm on the ball and already showing why he was considered to be the next Vieira before Arsene Wenger let him leave the Emirates.

Jagielka isn't there, he's been quality and so has pineaar who is on loan, but in talks over permanent deal James mcfadden- brum fans believe me you'll be frustrated with him next week

Brought in for £9.5 mil, which everyone scoffed at. Now looks to be one of the best wingers in the Prem.

...Terry Nutkins. This shrewd signing with some fingers missing (chewed off by chipmunks and the like) will prove to be a legendary goalkeeper for the Irons/Hammers/Caret&Blues/Nonces.

Bale and if ya going for early ddays Hutton could be a great purchase.

Pretty much any player that Harry buys off of Spurs at inflated prices when they've had enough of Jol's duffers. Harry's a scouting genius, unfortunately he can only field three players during the African Cup of Nations. Not racist. May be exaggeration, but it's halfway true.

I think Wenger's acquisition of Will Young has been more of note. He's always been hands on with the youngsters.

I would put Santa Cruz of Blackburn 1st. Then Torres defo 2nd. Especially as he only cost 20m not the 26m stated. Plus had he not been injured, and had Benitez not insisted on his squad rotation, he would also be top scorer over all with 30+ goals. Andy

Fernando Torres cost Liverpool 19.6 million not 26.5 million. How many times does this have to be corrected on a million different sites? It is part of the stick to beat Benitez with despite the fact his spending since last Jan is under 20 mill net. less than Sunderland, Man city etc etc. If he is given proper big money he can take on the top 3.If not then 4th is the maximum he will be able to achieve.
by Gerry Hater on February 25, 2008
Gerry, who has spent more in the last 6/7 seasons, Arsenal or Liverpool. And who is at the top while the other is fighting for 4th? You just got completely possessed!
by Me and your ma's bra Loo-Laa on February 25, 2008
True Gerry. Lazy journos will throw any crap together. Utd spent 15 mill ion Anderson and he is very good but don't forget they also spent 18.6 mill on Carrick & 17 mill on Hargreaves who are both crap.

Tuncay of middlesborough has to be there has scored 5 premiership goals and earned boro a vital 10 points in the games he scored in. He came in on a free transfer how can he not even be mentioned.
Oh dear, i said Torres cost 20m. Excuse me for adding 400k on to his cost to Liverpool. Gerry you spaz what's the difference. True though, give Benitez 10 years of the 20 fergie has had and it would be Benitez who has the most Trophies. Sadly I doubt he'll be given the time. Andy

What about Benjani, Best bargain it has to be, Corluka? Elano? Caicedo?????????
by James Walton on February 25, 2008
Wasn't Ashley Young signed in the January transfer window last year? This list is for signings since May...
Benjani has scored one goal for City. Corluka has looked decidedly shaky at times. Elano was a good buy though, should be on the list in place of Muamba
and Sagna... unheard of? Only if you don't know anything about football and only watch the premier league...

Yes Arsenal spent less and yes you are right to be cocky this season. Last season saw Arsenal finish below Liverpool and not get to Champ league final. Not a big problem. but this season Liverpool are below Arsenal and the world wants Bebitez's head!! why??!
by Jesus C on February 25, 2008
I would definitely have had Elano in there, probably in place of McFadden or Woodgate, as it's a bit early to say if they truly are great signings. Woodgate's never far from getting injured, and although they have improved, Birmingham could still go down. I'm not a City fan, but Elano has been great this season, although he maybe a bit out of form at the moment. What about worst signing of the season, for me it has to be either Darren Bent or Marlon King (just because someone thought he was worth £5m). After his 'performance' yesterday, Anelka might challenge too....
