The seven WORST BUYS of the season? Shame on Spurs, Man City and Newcastle!
You have to take the rough with the smooth in the transfer market and some big clubs have made big mistakes. Sunderland, Fulham and Reading have nothing to smile about, eitgher.

So it seems that more money has been spent in the transfer window just gone than in any previous year. This is hardly surprising but it’s always good to reflect on just how some of these astronomical signings have performed.
Darren Bent (Spurs) £16.5m from Charlton.
Much has been made of the amount of money the England international cost Martin Jol. That is kind of unfair on the player himself who, of course, has nothing to do with his transfer fee. That being said I think even hardened Tottenham fans have to admit this was hardly an inspired signing.
Capaca (Newcastle) Free from Lyon.
Costing nothing is not much of a defence, but coincidentally it is exactly what he offers Kevin Keegan’s side. Watching the Brazilian in action could become the latest drinking game, every time he lets the ball bounce in the box take another shot of alcohol! Believe me after 90 minutes you will be hammered.
Rolando Bianchi (Man City)£8.8m from Udinese.
Taken plenty of stick but wasn’t really that bad. Clearly homesick, the Italian was loaned to Lazio where he made an immediate impact, getting himself sent off in his first game.
Diomansy Kamara (Fulham) £6m from West Brom.
How much? I'm sure the fee would have raised eyebrows at Craven Cottage. Had a good season at West Brom in the championship last term, but he is now doing a very passable impression of his previous spell in the Premier League at Portsmouth. Made 21 appearances for Fulham and has two goals to show for it.
Jose Enrique (Newcastle) £6.5m from Villarreal.
Sorry Newcastle fans, but we have another member of the Sam Allardyce "do it yourself" defence. A very poor signing indeed, the full-back has been involved in 12 league games for the United side during which time they have conceded 24 goals. Enough said.
Michael Chopra (Sunderland) £5m from Cardiff.
I have to admit I thought the former Newcastle man might prove a decent signing, but I was wrong. After a good season with Cardiff the pint-sized striker started with a bang with an opening day last-minute winner against Spurs. He then followed that with a goal at St Andrews four days later, but in the following 22 games he has managed one goal - a penalty!
Emerse Fae (Reading) £2.5m from Nantes.
I think it's safe to say that Fae is not up to much, and the cash invested in the midfielder was, to say the least, a waste. When the Ivorian plays, Steve Coppell’s side lose - badly. He has taken part in six matches for the Royals, those matches have resulted in the following set of results Bolton 3-0 defeat, West Ham 3-0 defeat, Sunderland 2-1 defeat, Portsmouth 7-4 defeat, Blackburn 4-2 defeat, Arsenal 3-1 defeat. Coincidence? I think not

"Sorry Newcastle fans"... Newcastle fan here, you have nowt to apologise for other than explaining why you didn't put Alan Snith in your list. YET ANOTHER ALLARDYCE HORROR SIGNING. (Not to mention Rozehnal, VIduka and Geremi. And Big Sam wonders why he was sacked :) )
by steve hudson on February 25, 2008
Add Smith,Barton,Gerimi,Viduka and Rozenthal to your list...what a shower
by David Kirby on February 25, 2008
So, according to Per Sonalabuse, Big Sam wonders why he was sacked. The more appropriate question is why was he hired in the first place? The committee who selected him in the first place are the goats in all this for Toon.
by micky finn on February 25, 2008
How can you forget Bramble (had the wigan manager ever watched him play!?), one bit of business all Newcastle should be happy Big Sam conducted!!! Bent has not had a chance to prove himself, which is unlucky on the lad but he need to lift his game to out Keane and Berbatov.
by Sir Ron Manager on February 25, 2008
You see the problem with this is that Bianchi was signed from Reggina, not Udinese. Nuff said.
by Mickey Blue Eyes on February 25, 2008
How on earth is Owen hargreaves not in the list. £19 million to sit on the bench, when not injured.
by Kev Howell on February 25, 2008
Worst ever. Probably might make the prison team and they are welcome to the joke of a bloke he is.
by Stan on February 25, 2008
has to be, what utter crap that guy was yesterday, not versatile in any way.
by Harry Bearclough on February 25, 2008
Worst payout this season has to be Chelsea's wages this week. To be fair they should get half wages for comedy performance. I don't suppose they're really too fussed. It's more about playing a half-arsed game for Capello and taking calls from the wags on their mobiles during the game.
by ben Abolins on February 25, 2008
I dont know how many times wee need to say this Darren bent was NOT 16.5m he was 13m we paid 5m up front, 4m at the end of this season and 4m at the end of the next...... Still a lot of money, but as we got a nice sum for Defoe it really wasn't bad business for a good young English striker. Was unfortunate he got injured in the first game and lost a lot of confidence.
by Alan Gold on February 25, 2008
No-one's mentioned Barton, at £5.8m. He's been useless on the pitch but at least he's made news off it. By the way, though, no-one's as useless as Alan Smith and what a nasty bit of work. The best bit of business all season has been to get rid of Allardyce.
by Kev Man on February 25, 2008
How is Bianchi a worst signing? you even say "but wasn’t really that bad" yourselves! Pick one. Why should City be ashamed of taking a risk to improve their team? Sportingo shold be ashamed of being the worst news site on the web and having a complete lack of professionalism.
by Jeremy Poynton on February 25, 2008
Was OK, indeed. clearly homesick, and credit to Sven for treating the guy as a human being. He was in fact starting to look the part when he went, and he was certainly popular with the crowd. Hope you had fun making that bit up.
by Knob Jockey on February 25, 2008
Absolute shite. Haven't you got homework to do?
by Captain Dunkirk on February 25, 2008
Way off the mark re Bianchi. Having seen him play, the City fans knew Roly was a good player, as did Svennis. Hence the great reception he always got whenever he came on the park. He was unsuited to play the lone striker in a 4-1-4-1 but nobody could suss that before he gave it a go. Also the lad had a bad case of homesickness and credit to Sven for being sympathetic. Really, you guys write such drivel.

Allardyce signing except Beye and Faye...
by Fe Sayyah on February 25, 2008
Yeah fair enough Darren Bent hasn't set the Prem on fire after his 13mil signing - it's in installments. But saying that 5 goals in 11 starts(and a load of sub appearances) isn't too bad - it's better than the likes of Smith, Viduka, Bianchi etc, so go easy on him considering he has been injured - it took people like Henry, WiltERD, even Tevez to settle in - I believe Tevez went nearly half a season without scoring!! Like Comolli said - he's not a 8 month project, he's in for the long run!!! COYS well done for yesterday it made work SOOOO interesting today!!!!
by Cayden Army on February 25, 2008
imho the worst signing has to be joey barton. it would actually do us a favour if they locked him up;) gerimi iirc morinio said he was a player with the legs of a 40 year old smith? where exactly is his possition? hes like a more agressive dyer but less likely to score,if such a thing is possible duff keeping our best left sided player out of his prefered possition. he runs he dithers then gives the ball away or simply aimlessly takes a pot shot in the vaugue direction of goal/team memmber. it seems too difficult to run to the byline and cross the ball away from the keeper. and viduka..where did he go?
by cheeses s on February 26, 2008
In the lad's defense he hasn't exactly been given a run around as a striker...
by Gary Big bollocks on February 26, 2008
The seven worst signings from the worst site in the world my 5 year old brother can write better articles i do not know why anybody comes on sites like this what a load of shit.
by Eric Thomas on February 26, 2008
How Cacapa can come here and Rozehnal not and still cost 2,8M£ more, and was worse is a mystery. Even if Enrique looks like a waste of money, he still is 21 years old. The bad buisness for Newcastle is Barton, Geremi and Smith, players who only made us worse!
by Lad no.1 on February 26, 2008
Seriously, cacapa is not that bad! He has top positional awareness and is definitely better than rozehnal. It doesn't matter who u put in the newcastle defence, they wont do well anyway.
by si taylor on February 26, 2008
Was from Reggina for starts
by Austin Campbell on February 26, 2008
...you are going to slag off players, at least try to get their name right - it's Cacapa! That aside, your article's trash and you should try to find something more useful to do with your time, like counting the number of hooks on a square of velcro or something.
by G Abboudi on February 27, 2008
Barton has to be there, he's been shite all he has achieved here is getting into even more trouble. Smith has to be amongst them. Geremi even on a free is a bad one, our worst player he can't move. Rozey is bad but was cheap. Don't think Vid should be on there, he's quality needs more games.
by Archie Brand on February 27, 2008
Worst signings? Barton and Smith Rozenhal was OK when played in position, Enrique will be fine when he learns how to put his foot through the ball rather than trying to dribble out the box past the likes of Ronaldo. Barton and Smith have no talent and are a joke. They can't pass and behave like spoilt kids on and off the field.
