As we begin to enter the part of the season which Sir Alex Ferguson famously calls “squeaky bum time”, Manchester United have received a massive boost with the news that Gary Neville played an hour in the reserve team's 2-0 defeat by Liverpool reserves.

The Neviller, as he is affectionately known, has been out the first team for nearly a year. This is not his first comeback and the England international is likely to take it easy so as not to risk another breakdown. But his return could be crucial for United in the Premier League title run-in.

United have missed their club captain, not least because there has been uncertainty around who leads out the team on a weekly basis. Ryan Giggs has been given the captain’s armband, but he doesn’t always play. Edwin van der Sar, Rio Ferdinand and even Wayne Rooney have captained the team this season. The return of The Neviller will not only put any doubts to rest about his own future but will reassert his role as the leader of what is a very young squad.

Giggs and Paul Scholes, Neville's team-mates for more than 10 years, have been impressive this season and there is no underestimating their importance to players such as Anderson, Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney and Carlos Tevez. But unlike Scholes and Giggs, Neville, when fit, will start every game at right-back, which guarantees his experience in all the big games to come.

He has been there and done it, and with realistic talk of another United treble this season who better than Neville to guide some of the young talented players at Old Trafford? The Neviller brings a wealth of experience, with 85 England caps and seven Premier League titles. And his presence will improve the only problem position in the team.

If United do have a weak link this season, it is undoubtedly at right-back. Fergie's first-choice team is exceptionally strong but Wes Brown is not in the same class as many of United’s other players.

Neville is a far better player than Brown and can also cover in other areas of defence. Both Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic went off injured during the 5-1 win at Newcastle and Neville’s versatility could come in very useful during the run-in. He will improve United’s team, bringing a level of leadership and commitment that even a side as vastly talented as United's has missed so far this season.

Neville' return from injury could be crucial as United bid to claim another glorious treble.
