Arsenal heroes: English, Spanish, French - why does it matter?
The Champions League win in Milan was one of the greatest results by an English team in modern football history - yet the cynics have been quick to regurgitate the tired old argument that the Gunners team is almost devoid of British players. Mark Apostolou insists it's a total irrelevance.

I am sure you are sick and tired of the constant criticism of the lack of homegrown talent in the teams going great guns in Europe and in domestic competition. But my response is to ask: Why does it matter?
After Arsenal’s superb display in Milan, the media and opposition fans were just raring to point out that, other than Theo Walcott, no English player was involved in the 2-0 win over the Champions League holders. Well, quite frankly this is just an easy target for jealous supporters and lazy reporters to continually hark on about.
I am certain that although Gunners fans would be delighted to have more talent coming directly from the north London area, they sure as hell hold their heroes in high regard - even if they come from Spain, France or even Mali. The argument that the national team is suffering because of the influx of foreign talent simply holds no water. The English national team has failed because of a succession of average managers, lack of national pride on the players' part - and a poorly run FA.
For every person who decides to run a discussion down that route, I can point out how the emergence of foreign players into the English leagues has actually aided talent from the UK. Clearly, if great talents are brought in from the across the world, it stands to reason that that talent will help bring on local talent.

I am glad someone came up with these points because as an Arsenal fan i am sick and tired of the cliched tripe that the media comes up with! You hit the nail on the head
by Bernard on March 05, 2008
I know what you mean, this kind of rubbish is the kind of stuff Spurs fans come up with when faced with the undeniable fact that Arsenal are a class apart from them. Who cares which nationality a player is, if he is good enough then he gets a game! It's not rocket science!

Im so sick of biased media. There has to be always something about arsenal's foriegn player policy. if that is the case, then Man U should sell, ronaldo,Evra,Nani,Anderson..... and be all english. Infact the National cricket team should not have monty panesar... after all he is indian blood. Even better Capello should not coach england,, because he is not english.

Now lets put this into perspective, lastnight Arsenal beat a team that is currently 18 points behind a team that Liverpool recently smashed, a team that has a player in it old enough to be a grandfather! would Maldini seriously get into any top four premiership side? I very much doubt it! Watching Milan lastnight was very much like watching a recent Mike Tyson fight, washed up and sad!

If it's aided talent from the UK then why are the England team useless? Also, Monty plays cricket for England, Mr Patel, because he was born in Luton. Which is in England.

"why are the England team useless?" - because it's always been shit. Excellent article

Arsenal are currently 15 points ahead of Liverpool. Does that make Liverpool a washed up side? Whats the average age of Liverpool nearer the 30 years of A C Milan or the 22 years of the Arsenal?

Mr Great Real said lastnight Arsenal beat a team that is currently 18 points behind a team that Liverpool recently smashed, a team that has a player in it old enough to be a grandfather! would Maldini seriously get into any top four premiership side. Mr Great Real, your Liverpool won CL but was 5th in the PL in 2005, so is there any logic out there? You snub Everton the place of CL the follwoing season, did u complain about that? Mr Get Real, please get real, speak with brain.
Please you have been warned, now go ahead and shout your mouths off by claiming you have pulled off one of the best results ever, then when you come up against an inform team that really has a realistic chance of winning, you can look even more ridiculous when you are brought back down to earth! Milan are 18, yes 18 points behind a very average looking Inter side! the Italian league is on the way down, fact!!!!!

The Italian league is on the way down because it cannot go up. ... World champions and European cup winners not bad better than this country since 1968.... Arsenal fans aren't "givvin" it large it's the press doing that for us we know where we are thanks. PF why not answer some previous questions instead of just repeating yourself it works both ways read and write. Regards

PF it seems that you are hell bent on believing that Arsneal had it easy. So come out with it....why go on and on about why ac milan was old....just admit that you cannot stomach the fact that arsenal won ......and you are just trying to tell ur self more then anybody else that yeah yeah it was always easy...find better hobbies boy...

Aimed at the original author: I'm not saying I agree or disagree with what you are saying, but your assumption about homegrown players not being good enough to oust the foreign counterparts makes one massive error. You are assuming that a player's future potential can be correctly gauged at a certain age. Which, of course, it can't. Some players develop later than others and by having more and more foreign players in the premiership the late blooming players are never given the chance.

but if our english players arent in sides which are playing champions league football how are they going to get the experience and become the best like u say?!?! arsenal are basically a waste of and english space in the champions league, FACT! and one of the best results in european history?!?! LOL dont be silly, milan are absolute turd this season and have lost to worse teams this season at the san siro. hope u lot get chelsea in the quarters
by davio knobsville on March 07, 2008
If Milan are no good then why put the best English players up against them no point is there?.... We might as well use our worse foreigners to have a practice game.... Still the best of English are against the USA soon another friendly didn't qualify yet again., Thought most of the team came from Liverpool (champions league) Chelsea (champions league) Man U (champions league) How are they going to get experience?
by n n on March 07, 2008
Less than a year ago man utd was crushed by this side in san siro. The best player in the league at the time, Ronaldo, only pulled one trick which lasted the entire game, a disappearing one. Fast forward about 9 months and Arsenal outclass this same side who have added the 22million euro 18 year old genius Alexandre Pato to the world player of the year kaka, yet we still hear people moaning about how Arsenal got it easy.
by P F on March 07, 2008
Where were they in terms of position in the league and what was their form like when United played them? were they 5th and 18 points off the leaders? the facts speak for themselves!
