There are so many emotions going through me right now I can't even think straight. But one thing that has stuck in my mind since Milan were knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal is that Milanisti and football fans around the world will never see Paolo Maldini play in the competition again. When someone is asked to describe Maldini, the first things that comes to mind are words like "legend", "a leader", "one-club man", "loyal', "the perfect gentlemen". He is exactly that and more. Every football fan around the world knows the name Maldini and everyone has respect for him.Never one to claim the limelight, he is one who prefers to stay in the comfort of his own home with his loving family. If he is not at home, he will be at Milanello training and teaching a few of his team-mates a thing or two.'We will miss his perfectly-timed tackles, his runs up the flanks, his leadership on and off the field'The perfect professional in all aspects, it is no wonder to us why he has been captain of Milan and the Italian national team. No wonder he has set the record for the most Serie A appearances and the most appearances for the Azzurri. At the age of 16 he was already a leader on the field.Maldini is one of the most decorated players in the history of football, having won everything one can at club level. And need I remind you it was all with one club. But it has been with the national team where the trophies have been in short supply.Last night we bid goodbye to Milan and, above all, Maldini on the European stage, as he will be retiring at the end of this season. He will surely be missed after being a predominant figure for 23 years in Europe and having made over 1,000 appearances for the Rossoneri and Italy.

Its amazing that sportingo can crwal out of the gutter press section, and host a wicked writeup on the awesome italian veteran .. kudos to sportingo and the author. Maldini has been amazing for football -- with his skills, personality and dignity. Hope we do not forget this legend too soon.

Great career, fine player, played with sincerity despite being italian. The Italian footballer is so often seen as a cheat and a religious hypocrit but Maldini rose above his countrymen to play professionally even though he was asked many times to cheat by his coaches.Italian football is infiltrated by criminals as we have recently seen in the press.Refs are regularly paid 6 figure sums to sway matches and players cheat despite being deeply religious but MALDINI shone throughout his CAREER to rise HIGH above the scum that is italian football.

What can you say about him was apart of one of the great teams with Baresi, Rossi, Rijkaard, Van Basten, Gullit during his time. Outlasted them all in terms of his career. One of the greats not only for Milan but the whole of football. I salute you Paolo!

I selected my best 11 of all time recently and Paulo was one of the first names in it. He is a true star and will be missed. Great player, great role model.

Maldini is and always has been a true professional, any young players should follow his example. Not only is he a great footballer and a true leader he is a loyal player who truly loves the beautiful game. Good luck paolo the game looses a true legend. (good article sportingo....for a change)

Mal...is the best defender on the fac eof the earth. There is no one who can replace him. No lie. paolo has made his decision on his retirement but as much as we would like him to continure he has made up his mind and we should respect that. I love AC Milan and I love paolo maldini but the time has come for him to go and I think we should respect that... to paolo.. tu sei tutta la mia vita... I am Milan's #1 fan in my country.. Trinidad and Tobago and I am AC Milan till death..... I love my club, I love my captain and I wish him the best!

Maldini truly is the greatest player I have ever seen I have grown up with him playing football. When he retires there will be something missing from the world of football that can never be found again. Legend
