I know who I want in the Liverpool back four!
Dyed-in-the-wool Red Sean Maloney liked the look of Rafa's defence in Wednesday night's 4-0 drubbing of West Ham. But he reckons the quartet can be improved with the return of Daniel Agger.

Well, Liverpool got a clean sheet yesterday, which is good - and things looked fairly solid back there. But was that our best back-four selection? It's a subject to which I have decided to dedicate some of my not-working-at-my-desk time.
We have the third-best defence in the Premier League so we are pretty good at the back and now we have some interesting permutations to choose from, which is key to any team looking to challenge on multiple fronts.
So if Pepe Reina is a given, then who should be in front of him? Last night we had Alvaro Arbeloa, Martin Skrtel, Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise and it seemed pretty solid. Riise had one of his better games, as always going forward he is a far better player. Skrtel had a good game, too, and managed some timely challenges.
This West Ham game was crucial, of course, as it gives us the edge in the Champions League race - and the players involved did what was necessary. Carra was back in central defence, a role he prefers and alongside the Slovakian he looked assured. What, then, when Daniel Agger returns?
Add to that equation Steve Finnan, Sami Hyypia and Fabiano Aurelio and we have a nice situation to be in. It's always good to have a number of options to choose from, especially given the amount of games that the club is involved in. But who is best?
Personally, I would like to see an Agger-Skrtel pairing as and when injury concerns permit this. I would then opt for Carragher and Riise as full-backs.
And although I am a big fan of Finnan, I would prefer to count on the four I have chosen.

My only worry is that Carragher offers us nothing going forward and Riise had a one off good game. Arbeloa is automatic choice at right back in my eyes, excellent defensively and a great outlet going forward. We just need a new left back. Skrtel and Agger look like they could be a top pairing which could mean a regular place for Carragher is no longer automatic.

I think Rafa will go with your choice against the likes of Arsenal and manure to make us more solid. Maybe it's a bit too soon to for Skrtl to be given a permanent place in the back four so my choice would be Arbeloa,Carra,Agger and Aurelio and I would like to see Insua break into the first team for next season.

Arbeloa - Carragher - Skrtel - Agger Agger can play football, and has a shot on him. I wouldn't mind seeing him at left back to see if he can adapt. Carragher needs to watch out, because if Agger and Skrtel get going Carra might not get a place!

Alves-Carragher-Skrtel-Agger would be awesome with Arbeloa, Insua, Hobbs and mikel san jose as back up

i agree it is a great problem to have. i would like to see us play finnan on the right because i think he is still one of the if not the most consistant right back in the league i would play carragher and skrtel in the middle and agger on the left. the reson i would play agger on the is becausehe has speed, a great pass on him a good cross and a great shot on him as well. skrtel has the speed that agger has so there is no problem there and carragher...... well what can you say about the man but simply heart ans soul of liverpool along with gerrard.

Right, Carra at full back???????????? Sorry mate Carra is a centre half end of, playing him at full back is defensive and we need to be more offensive. Personally I thought we weren't great at the back last night, remember Boa Morte should have scored and despite playing well including that mazey dribble I'm still not sure about Skrtel. Your point about Agger is obvious, he's the closest thing I've seen to Alan Hansen in a red shirt and if he comes back as good then I believe he'll be a future captain. Riise as far as I'm concerned is done, always suspect at left-back and has only one trick on the wing kick it and run past the man, a bit obvious to anyone, and his goalscoring record is abysmal given the amount of shots he hits, trust me if this guy could get sued for injuring Kopities he'd be broke (again). Steve Finnan has bee excellent under Rafa but has had a bad season, everyone has them, but is old father time catching up on our right-back? I hope not, he deserves another season. As for Arbeloa, well for £2.5 mill someone's laughing and it's not Deportivo La Coruna, this guy is quiet and effective and gets the job done a real little gem of a full back. Personally if you pick the best back 4 we have at this moment I'd go for Finnan at RB Carra and Agger in the middle and Aberloa on the left but it's a squad game now and we need cover for every position. I'm not saying Rafa's right with all the rotation you need to keep the core intact as much as possible in my opinion but whilst I wouldn't be over-rotating my centre backs (Rafa actually doesn't) I think some rotation can be used at full back (not one game in, one game out but you need to give game time to likes of Riise or Fabio Auerillo.
