With all the money and interest generated from the Champions League, it seems that our other cup competitions are in danger of being totally overlooked.

The importance of the Carling Cup has been questioned a lot in recent years, especially with Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool often resting key players for ties. Since it was founded in 1961, Liverpool have been the League Cup's most successful team, winning it seven times, yet this season they fielded a severely weakened side in the quarter-finals.

No surprise then when they went crashing out to eventual finalists Chelsea and robbed us of the possibility of a fantastic all-Merseyside semi-final. Manchester United totally disregarded the competition, going out to Coventry City. As for the UEFA Cup, you'd only ever bother to watch it if your team was actually playing.

‘How comfortable is it for Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to secure CL football each year? Scrapping the fourth spot would force a real battle for third’

This begs the question: should the entire format be changed?  Some ideas would be:

Offer a five-point bonus for the Carling Cup Winners – This would make the competition truly worth winning. Those five points could mean clinching a Premier League title.

A Champions League spot for the UEFA Cup winners – Surely winning the UEFA Cup deserves a place in Europe's elite competition. This would certainly raise its profile.

A Champions League spot for winning the FA Cup – This is definitely needed and would totally re-vamp the competition.

Scrapping the 4th place CL place – How comfortable is it for Man United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool to secure CL football each year? Scrapping the fourth spot would force a real battle for third, in turn breaking the big monopoly of three reds and a blue, and generating massive appeal for the FA Cup.

Maybe the problem lies in the fans’ perception of these cups? Maybe supporters should take into consideration that there are many teams in the UEFA Cup who you could argue are better then Champions League teams. For eample, surely Bayern Munich, Spurs, Atletico Madrid, Everton and Werner Bremen are better then Slavia Prague, Rosenberg and Lille.

Obviously, the Champions League is far superior overall but I’m just highlighting the quality of Europe’s second competition.

As for the Carling Cup, I feel Chelsea deserve special praise for treating it with respect. The competition has unfairly attracted various nicknames, most notably the “Mickey Mouse Cup”.

Again, perceptions need to be changed, OK, so what if Man United and Liverpool close their eyes to it? So what if Arsene Wenger chucks a few youngsters in his side? There is still a Wembley showpiece to play for, there are still a  number of high quality clubs – most notably Chelsea, Spurs, Everton, Villa, Pompey  and Man City – who take this competition seriously. So how can it be a competition to disregard?
