Arsene Wenger: Arsenal's master of diplomacy or paranoid loon?
The Gunners manager is building quite a reputation as the King Lear of the Premier League with his outbursts and rantings.

Arsene Wenger seems to be going through a rough spot of late. Granted, the pressures of managing a top-four side are obvious - but in the race for bitchiest top-four managers, Mr Wenger is pulling ahead of his rivals. Sir Alex Ferguson and Rafa Benitez are both known for their paranoid bleatings, and every time Jose Mourinho opened his mouth some eccentric bon mot seemed to crawl out. The whole thing is pretty shameful, really, and you have to respect Avram Grant for remaining (relatively) sane whilst his Chelsea team reside in the eye of the storm. In the mad high-altitude scramble at the top of the Premier League, ruthless managers, like crazed parents running alongside their kids at school sports day, will pretty much resort to anything, including taking their rivalry onto another plane - the ethereal world of managerial mind games.A lot has been written about Wenger's knee-jerk (and later retracted) statement about Martin Taylor's tackle on Arsenal striker Eduardo. It was only later, when he had cooled off, that the Frenchman realised the folly of such an outburst. But it looks, though, as if Wenger is getting more and more hot-headed by the day.Hot on the heels of Wenger's screaming about the Taylor tackle, and leaping to the bait that Mourinho dangled out for him (the Portuguese agent provocateur claimed that Arsenal were "unique" because they haven't won anything for nearly three years but Wenger is still worshipped), Arsene rounded on Mourinho's desire to "kill Chelsea" and also claimed that the football world was full of cheats.
Wenger ranted: “I know people who have won trophies and I don’t rate them. I can give you examples of people who have won the Olympic 100 metres and they have cheated. I know people in football who have done exactly the same. But for me, sport is more than just winning trophies. Winning cannot be everything.“What is important for me is to play in a fair way and in a way that people will enjoy. Of course winning is important — but so is moral integrity. A trophy is something you can show only for the moment. But what remains after that is the way you have played and the way you have behaved. These are also important.”I respect Arsenal. They have enough young stars in their ranks to make even the most prolific Hollywood agent green with envy, but Wenger's constant scuttling out to launch pompous edicts takes the shine off his team’s noble efforts to play sublime football. There comes a time when you have to step back, and therein lies the problem. In Arsene's world, he is a magnanimous genius, only stopping in his quest for brilliant football to point out how his rivals are rampant cheaters. In many ways this typifies the Arsenal myth, one of a refined and genteel club in the marble halls of the old Highbury. I suggest deluded Gunners look up Henry Norris and his role in cheating Arsenal to the top and muscling in on Tottenham's north London catchment area. Arsenal are all fur coat and no knickers, and Arsene Wenger is a paranoid loon.

Wenger is doing a great job against Arsenal and now anyone is looking do dig their claws in, to get a one up on him. I wish Wenger the very best, and those who cannot see and respect this mans intelligence, knowledge and understanding of football then please, you are the ones who are blind to a great football manager of our era. In the last five years Arsenal are at number 18 of the 20 Premier League clubs as reagrds to spending on Players. Mourinho, Rafa and Ferguson have paid huge sums to stay on top. And Arsenal still play stylish football as witnessed against Milan, so for all you other fans, keep your managers, we'll keep Wenger, we like our football the Wenger way, you have it your way.

Syd, Its really frustrating isn't it? Looks like Wenger is really getting under your skin - for you to write such a scathing commentary - and always coming sounding more sensible than your own rant.

You have to wonder about the mental state of those who cannot absorb comments made by people like Wenger without allowing their own prejudices to colour their understanding of what is being said. This leads to an inability to think rationally and post the sort of paranoid, partisan rubbish such as the article above. Watch Wengers post match interview commenting on Taylors tackle - was he really 'screaming about Taylor's tackle' as is stated? Did he really 'leap to the bait that Mourinho dangled' and 'scuttle out to issue an edict' or simply respond calmly to a question raised at his regular press conference in an erudite and thoughtful way. Look at it again was it really a 'rant' or a reasoned response to an invitation to comment on an issue raised by someone else? In describing Wengers comments using such emotive adjectives which obviously do not in any way accurately reflect the manner in which they were delivered Syd Farr betrays a lack of balance most probably explained by sheer, naked envy. When it comes to being a paranoid loon it is very clear that the writer has a far more tenuous grasp of reality, and a much weaker ability to think for himself, than Arsene Wenger has.

here is undoubtetly you my friend. You seem to be easily influenced by the biased media who made Taylor the victim after making the worst tackle in Europe this season on poor Eduardo. I recall Sir Alex speaking for days in the media about the horrible tackle made by Gallas against young Nani, but in your words "Mr Wenger is pulling ahead of his rivals". I don´t really get your point with this article because it´s only jealous people like yourself and the unemployed Mourinho who seem to think Wenger is spouting crap. My perspective is rather that Wenger is one of the few sane people in the circus that the EPL has become with billionaire owners taking over half of the top flight clubs and most premiership teams spending more than Arsenal in the last couple years. But of course Wenger is an idiot for condemning a potential career ending tackle and having the audacity to disagree with Mourinho that spending above the means of the club is not something to applaud but is in fact cheating. But please continue with your unoriginal perspective and you´ll be writing for the Sun in no time if you aren´t already.

I have read so many articles on this site, this being my last one ofcourse, the conclusion is that all arsenal haters post all their hate stuff here. Please, can you find some other team to criticize. Can you not criticize milam for losing to kids. What else need be told to you, in order that Arsenal kids are left alone with the manager. Sarkozy, a whole president comes is scheduled to go down to Wenger for some advice. Can you imagine this, okey, Anchelotti can be consulted for some sobber and unskewed view about Arsene's coaching abilities. I officially want to confirm my never visiting this site ever again.

arsenal don't value players what they do is to buy what mourinho called "jewel" use them and givin them peanut. unlike manu, liverpool & chelsea who value players.

I think your article is too hard on wenger. Are you suggesting he has no right of defence when he is maligned or attacked? Wenger brought some thing different to epl. Before we dont care about epl, we were ardent followers of italian league. Just give credit to the man for making epl one the league to watch due to the kind of sublime football they play.

Get a life. What have achieved yourself. Yes in Arsene's world he is a genius. Why would you want to take him out of his world. Create your own and let's see. I am tired of people who sit on the sidelines and comment about successful people and make a career out of it. Arsene Wenger has achieved a lot for Arsenal and is grooming a good crop of players and handles himself with distinction. That sure is rubbing off the team and his players.

Yet again, people cant stop talking about Arsenal. How would you live your life if you didn't have The Arsenal to snipe at every other day? The only paranoid loon is the idiot who spends his time writing pointless articles like this. If you knew anything (which you dont) Wenger's monaco side were the victims of Marsaille's cheating back in the early nineties. That's what he's talking about. Paranoid bleatings? Do you research!
by Arun on March 08, 2008
Wenger's paranoid and Mr Moroniho is god and Taylor's innocent and Eduardo's to be blamed and you are a moron !! I don't see anything wrong in what Wenger said. Its not just trophies but its the way you win them. And can you think how many times people have verbally attacked Arsenal before Wenger had to back his TEAM rahter than be a mute ? How many times did this season did Wenger start any war-of-words with any manager or any player ?! Paranoid, my a$$ ..

So...The paranoid Arsenal fans are defending their PARANOID manager! And not a mention of Henry Norris - you Gooners dont want to talk about that do you?

If someone has mental illness one of the first signs is talking to yourself. He is a loon.
by The knower of all things on March 08, 2008
What we are seeing in Wegner are the signs of a TRUE genuis, simple as that.Hate him or Love him he is a footballing genius.
by Barry Foster on March 08, 2008
So James Dylan thinks the fact that no one has mentioned Henry Norris and the events of almost a 100 years ago. demonstrates paranoia? What greater demonstration of paranoia can there be then in thinking it has any real relevance to the topic. If you wanted an example of paranoiac envy and unrelenting obsession there it is brilliantly encapsulated in his post!
Congrats on being the first Gooner on here with any knowledge of history!
Thanks - as a spud of course you would need a very good command of ancient history to recall anything worthwhile you had achieved in the game. But don't let your jealously of your far, far, far more successful neighbours feed your paranoia so obviously.

...Let's all calm down and get a bit of perspective - you lunatic Arsenal fans who claim Arsene is whiter than white - didn't he call Ruud VN a "cheat" - a pretty much unprovoked claim -- And what about calling the Carling Cup final lino a "liar" -- not nice, not classy.
