Of course they are different types of striker, but there is one thing that appears to connect Fernando Torres and the great Welshman Ian Rush. And it's not just the adoration of the Kop - but the ability to score goals for fun.

Torres is well on the way to becoming the first Liverpool player to break 20 league goals in a season in over a decade. He also has a knack of providing a few assists as well. His enthusiasm is infectious and quite often in recent weeks the determination of the 24-year-old Spaniard has rubbed off on his lacklustre colleagues.

To be this prolific in his first season in the English game is truly remarkable. There will be those who will unfairly suggest that he tends to score most of his goals against weak opposition but I would point out that his strike against Chelsea may well be one of the best of the season and let's hope he can add more in the forthcoming matches against Manchester United, Everton and Arsenal.

'It was a brave move for Rafa Benitez to invest a record fee in the Atletico Madrid man'

Obviously Torres will have to go some way to come near to the legend that Rush was, but it's early days and the future looks bright.

I think it was a brave move for Rafa Benitez to invest a record fee in the Atletico Madrid man. Yes, Torres was a household name and, yes, he had scored freely in La Liga, but I think a great many people were dismayed at the price tag it took to bring in the Spanish international.

This is surely one of the best debut seasons in English football history. I am struggling to remember a player who has made such an impact in his first season - it’s possible that Torres will manage to reach 30 goals in all competitions this term, a phenomenal return.

I know that I could be getting carried away with myself but watching Torres at Anfield and on the road I am beginning to feel that a true Liverpool hero is in the making. Long may it continue!
