Everton beating Liverpool to fourth place would equal a healthier Premier League
Reaching the Champions League represents a marriage consummated through grit and desire. Liverpool may be a few hundred steps across Stanley Park - in spending terms it's more like a hundred million dollars. So which club represents value for money?

Gnawed lips, knotted entrails, throttled match-day programmes and cringing behind the sofa; as an Evertonian born at the wrong time I am not accustomed to success . . . but times are beginning to change.
For me, Everton used to be pugnacious relegation fighters, and only in the deepest recesses of my mind can I remember vague snippets of success.
I recall looking at an Everton team photo, wondering with a child's logic that, if my dad said he loved Gary Lineker like a son, did that make him my brother? Tragically as time was called on the 1980s, with Lord of the Sod inevitability, my footballing consciousness sprouted just as Everton began to wilt.
My dad's boyhood team contained the 'Holy Trinity' and had a full-to-the-brim trophy cabinet, but the team I fell in love with was Joe Royle's Moyes-esque band of brothers.

I hope Everton finish forth, they deserve it for their batteling performances this season, I just worry that the pressure may get to them.

Ed great piece mate, we have some bad injuries at the moment and we do have some hard games to come. Im not 100% that we will get 4th TBH, not because I dont think we are good enough, I do, but becuase Liverpool the luck of the devil and that worries me.
by chris on March 11, 2008
I really hope that Everton finish 4th............ and Liverpol finish 10th........ then win the champions league and take the place off you.. haha
by munkichimp on March 11, 2008
As an Everton fan I don't mind if we finish 5th. Let's be honest, it's a long time since we won anything so there's no real expectations, and all I ask is that, season on season, we improve, and I don't mind if it's only a little. Granted, other teams around us can improve even faster with the financial clout we haven't got, but Everton fans aren't stupid and know when a new player can improve us from where we were. Yakubu's improved us. Piennar's improved us. Jagielka's improved us. Added to that, players already with us have improved i.e Osman, Howard (he was good anyway but looks absolutely top drawer at the minute) amongst others. Finish 5th and a couple of good buys before next year and I'll be happy. When we stop improving, that's when we need to be worried.

Chris, why would you want to see your team finish 10th in the league? i think this is typical of liverpool fans - 'we dont care about the league, only about the cups'
by Steve Pike on March 11, 2008
Utter rubbish. Last time EFC finshed 4th, they got knocked out of the Champions League in the Qualifiying stage. So you think it's better for the English Game to only have 3 teams in the group stages as apposed to 4? Get a proper job
on March 11, 2008 on March 11, 2008
Jim if LFC finish 10th but win the Champions League, and Everton finish 4th. Liverpool will qualify as holders and Everton will be demoted to the UEFA cap. That would be brilliant
by villa109 on March 11, 2008
while everton and liverpool concentrate on each other, villa will win our game in hand against boro tomorrow night to move within 5 points. then looking at the run in fixtures, it is favourable to us. the scouse clubs have to play each other and we have to go to goodison (where we have a fantastic record) i'm glad villa have been written off....hopefully we'll be able to sneak in with nobody noticing!! keep bitching boys!
you go on about the refereeing etc, and talk about liverpools current form?? How about the fact you robbed sunderland at the weekend, scoring with a handball, after playing truly awful, you are not exactly cruising the UEFA cup, so it would be pointless having you waste a champions league spot.
I am loving this season, it reminds me so much of a couple of years ago were they talked about us non stop, it shows just how much it hurts them doesnt it. Lads we are ten times the team we were 3 yrs ago and thats why we have lost 1 game in Europe all season and are unbeaten in the league in 2008, its also why we are still giving you a run for your money for 4th. Smile be happy and enjoy it.

The Blue side should just be made up to be trying to be forth!!! at the end of the day this is our worst season for years, yet this is your best for years!!! keep trying Blues!!!!!! One day you might be a Big club like us, then again no you won't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes Al it muts be great being the worst team out the big spenders every year, it seems now there is a new kid on the block, actually not so new we finished in the top four 3 seasons ago, and for a lot less than its cost you. For Sale, 1 soul of a Team from Liverpool, any bid accepted.
by Ken T on March 11, 2008
kenny harper, i think you got it the other way round. it si the evertonians who get so obsess with the reds side that they only talk about them and nothing else. Liverpool supporters have much other topics and teams to talk about. Just like you pauper manager who thinks 4th is so great for everton. Yes, to be 4th it is really poor for Liverpool. That's the difference you see :-D cheers

Look at you guys - Everton would embarass themselves in Europe, We'd rather finish 10th and win the CL then you won't qualify. Get a grip will you. You're a laughing stock. Challenging for 4th place having spent hundreds of millions when Everton are in this position based on a solid team ethic and astute acquisitions. Oh and the Sunderland result - they all count fella but it's a bit rich of you to mention that bearing in mind the farce of refereeing at the Goodison derby. And to the other fella who said "you're not exactly cruising the UEFA" 7 consecutive victories (a club record)! So we meet a team who are themselves playing very well and lose 2-0 - remember it's only half time and to be honest - I imagine we will go out but you know what - we keep making progress, keep climbing the table and keep getting further in cup compeitions (UEFA, Carling Cup) - how much progress have Liverpool made???
by Big Vic on March 11, 2008
Up until last week - Sunderland had won more home games than Liverpool. Enough said!
If that is the case Ken T, why is it that almost every Everton subject on this site is bomabrded with Liverpool fans, this one being an ideal example. I'll grant you one thing, we have a lot to say when it comes to your club, but lets face who wouldnt with so much going on there, as for 4th being so good for us and bad for you, as if thats some sort of meausre as to the stature of your club in comparism, as moyes said the other day what started as a season to become champions, after spending £145m in 4 years and finally getting his 20 goal a season man he wanted has now become a season to compet e with a club who hasnt sold its soul to anyone who wants it and pays its own way in the world, now if thats success for Liverpool FC once again then good on you. The only reason the expectations of your team are so much higher is because you spend more, you have borrowed more and spent more so by rights you should have a bigger squad with better players, more able to cope with the modern game and Europe, as it tunrs out we have shown you up really havent we, we are doing the same as you on half the money, now as a result your fans have only one real answer and that is, if and when we qualify for the ECL, it will be wasted ?? Oh dear, its a compliment you know.

Im a crap writer that has nothing decent to write about, so I write a sh*t article, mention two rival clubs in a provoking way, sit back and watch the hits come in!
I'm an Evertonian mate - whoever is posting and pretending to be me is the real wind up merchant, baiting me to reply - oh and look you've won your little victory - d'oh! Enjoy mate.

First id like to say what Moyes has achieved this season is nothing short of incredible. However from a neutral point of view, I just dont get excited when I watch Everton play. The football is very effective, but boring and to be honest I get about as hyped up at the prospect of watching Everton play as I do Wigan! Plus I feel Liverpool are likely to get alot further then Everton in the Champions league.

Let yak i am one of the people who love his game, and that he should rise up his game more so that he can be one of the players for the africa footballer of the year.
by Jonny Denholm on March 12, 2008
Everton are way past where they should be if you take in to account there stadium support away support fan base it just shows when they see being in the uefa cup as a great achievement.
by Kenny Harper on March 12, 2008
Jonny-- doesnt it show how low Liverpools sites have been set in that case, only ahead of a little old team like Everton on goal difference.... AAhh the poor old kopites, maybe a big march is needed or something.

As a Newcastle fan who goes home and away been to many many football grounds i admit St james park is nowhere near as loud as it used to be mainly cos PROPER fans have not got the money to go to games but on its day St james park is by far the noisiest ground in the country but most games it is pretty average but still noisier than most. I was at Anfield the other day and we outsung them and even at 3 nil up they were very quiet anfield is suffering in the same way as st james park. At st james the biggest problem with the atmosphere is we have to watch shit football week in week out with hardly any goals or even shots on target with very negative players who are SHIT. The fans i most laugh at are man utd fans when they say there stadium is noisy 70+thousand people mostly sitting in silence even there players and mangers have come out and said how poor it is. There is only 1 ground in london that creates any noise is Upton park with west ham and there fans are the only good cockney fans similar to us in the sense they know there team will not really achieve much but still turn up and support there team home and away.Lastly on away fans we have by far the best away support in the lge we sell more away tickets than any other club other than man utds fans from worldwide and man city have shocking home and away support doing very well in the lge and are still thousands of empty seats they say there is only city fans live in manchester is manchester a city of 40000 people.
