The panicky scramble for fourth spot in the Premier League will step up a gear over the remaining games, and it's starting to look very tight indeed. An analysis of the three clubs fighting for fourth - Liverpool, Everton, and Aston Villa – shows that there are some glorious showdowns on the horizon!
Liverpool's home games (with predictions): v Reading (W), v Everton (D), v Blackburn (W), v Man City (W).
Liverpool's away games:v Man Utd (L), v Arsenal (L), v Fulham (W), v Birmingham (W), v Tottenham (W).
Totalpoints - 19.
A quick scan tells us that Liverpool have four games left at Anfield, but five away games, including tough trips to Man Utd and Arsenal. They will also have to deal with a tough three game run, travelling to Old Trafford, facing Everton in the Merseyside derby at Anfield, and then going to the Emirates to play Arsenal.
In the same time period Everton face West Ham at home, the Merseyside derby clash, and then Derby County. Assuming that both teams stay level iwith each other in their previous game against Reading and Fulham, then these three fixtures could be hugely important. If Everton win against West Ham and Derby, both teams draw at Anfield, and if Liverpool lose in away dates at Old Trafford and the Emirates - then Everton could conceivably be six points clear of their Merseyside rivals.
Everton's home games: v West Ham (W), v Derby County (W), v Chelsea (L), v Aston Villa (W), v Newcastle (W).
Everton's away games: v Fulham (W), v Liverpool (D), v Birmingham (W), v Arsenal (L).
Total points - 19.
Although Everton's first four games are all definitely winnable (I include the Liverpool game in there because of its sheer unpredictability) there is a distinct sting in the tail for the Toffees with three hard games against Chelsea and Aston Villa at home followed by the penultimate game against Arsenal at the Emirates.
Everton still have to play three of the four teams directly above them (Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal) as well as a definite six-pointer against Aston Villa. Everton also have a slight advantage over Liverpool in that they play five games at home and four away with Liverpool doing the exact opposite.
Aston Villa's home games: v Middlesbrough (W), v Sunderland (W), v Bolton (W), v Birmingham (W), v Wigan (W).
Aston Vill's away games: v Portsmouth (W), v Man Utd (L), v Derby County (W), v Everton (L), v West Ham (W).
Total Points - 24.
Villa, the overlooked challengers, not only have a game in hand on their Merseyside rivals but can also boast a comparatively easier run in. They are currently seven points off the pace but the only truly tough games they have are away to Manchester United and Everton - their game at Fratton Park shouldn't be as hard, with Portsmouth trailing off in the League, and having a relatively poor record at Fratton Park.
If my predicted results are true, the chase for fourth place will be won by Liverpool on goal difference, and as my predictions are as likely to succeed as Derby County in the Nou Camp, it is still anyone's game.
Liverpool are the marginal favourites because of their better goal difference, and their bigger squad (injuries are already starting to rear their ugly heads). You'll notice that I'm definitely not the bastard lovechild of Mystic Meg and Sherlock Holmes - and any number of slip-ups and different permutations could spin out of the remaining fixtures - and my projected results look very optimistic, not being able to foresee any number of surprise banana skins. Nevertheless, here is how I predict the chase for fourth will end up:
4. Liverpool - 75 points.
5. Everton - 75 points.
6. Aston Villa - 72 points.
This prediction also highlights how important not only the Merseyside derby will be but also how crucial Aston Villa's game at Goodison will be. If Villa win that game then they will leapfrog Everton. With only a handful of games to go any of these teams could grab fourth, which will make for a very exciting finish to the league season!

Liverpool will win the Derby and will not lose at OT and the Emirates (2 draws) so add another 4 points to that 19 point tally you have...! Liverpool clear 4th, maybe even 3rd....we'll see

You seriously think that Villa will win 8, yes, EIGHT games and not draw any???? Villa are currently 7 points behind Everton and Liverpool, there is no way they will catch either of these two. The scrap is between the Red and Blue halves of Merseyside, to look beyond these two is just plain daft.
unless I'm mistaken but Villa were lucky to draw and Boro last night. 2 point off Villa.

Villa played their game in hand last night, got a jammy draw, and are still 7 points behind. Ever heard of researching something before you write drivel?

Realistically you're preditcions are probably right, but there'll be a few more upsets between now and the end of the season. I think Villa might fall away a bit, and it'll become a two horse race between the pride of Merseyside, and the dirty red shower. But it could go either way. One thing I do know, I'll be a nervous man come derby day at Analfield

theres goes your predications down the toilet.

Everton will finish 4th if We can create a gap of 6 points over Liverpool with 5 games remaining as you point out. The CL may play an important role too with Everton Unfortunately only involved in the race for 4th now. The difference between the Uefa and the CL place for Everton would be that We could afford 1 Extra Top Player next year in Our attempts to get back in the Prem's Big 4/5/6 ??? Liverpool would also not have that Extra Cash so it counts Double.

They're already 7 points back with the same games played ! . Its a two horse race, everton play chelsea, arsenal and villa in three of their last four games, that looks like at least a six point swing away from them to me. Liverpool will finish fourth by two pints.

You can forget Villa. They only drew against Boro and they're away to Pompey next weekend and won't win there either so they're out of it. As for Everton and Livepool, one thing you can be sure of is that no matter what set of results you pick, you'll never get it right. I fancy Everton to get 4 points from their games against Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea. Liverpool won't lose both games against Manure and Arsenal. Birmingham away is gonna be very tough for both teams and they're gonna have the biggest say in who gets 4th. One of us is gonna slip up there. Overall, I think you've over-estimated what both clubs will get. I'd pul Liverpool down for 15 points EXCLUDING the derby result and Everton down also down for 15 points EXCLUDING the derby result. So it all comes down to that and maybe Evertons ability to rattle up big scores in games against the likes of Derby, West Ham and Newcastle, and hoping Liverpool don't get any more big wins, and hoping Arsenal or Man Utd can put a few past them too.

I can see Mr Benitez resting a couple of players this weekend and Reading getting a plucky draw at Anfield. Watch this space.

Q. When was the last time Everton got a point at Craven Cottage in the premiership. A. Never. Guess we'll have to win the Derby...
by Nick on March 13, 2008
Mikky, records are there to be broken and we've been unbeaten since the turn of the year. I'd be suprised if we didn't bag all 3.
