Did greed motivate Lucas Neill's move from Blackburn to West Ham?
There's more to greed than money argues Chris Hockman. Was it money or ambition in the Australian's case?

In 2007, Lucas Neill made a move from Blackburn Rovers to West Ham. Nothing unusual there, but if we look at all the circumstances surrounding the move we can see how easy it would be to accuse him of greed. Prior to the move, former Australian National team assistant Johan Neeskens said that Neill "could play for any of the best clubs" and rumours erupted about which clubs were interested in him. Chelsea, Barcelona and Liverpool were all rumoured to be interested in Neill, with Liverpool apparently actually making an offer. He ended up signing for West Ham, which could have been for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the other teams would not have made him captain and he would have had no guarantee of a starting spot at those clubs. Add to that the fact that West Ham were facing relegation and some players actually like a challenge. Surely though, a cashed-up West Ham offering a rumoured £60,000 per week would make anyone (well anyone who isn’t already earning that much) think twice; it was far more than he was on at Blackburn and apparently double Liverpool’s offer. Money had to be a big motivation.Prior to Australia’s 2007 Asian Cup campaign, a storm erupted. Mark Viduka retired from international football only to be coaxed back into the side by then manager Grahame Arnold, apparently on the condition that he would be given the captaincy. Lucas Neill was the incumbent, and understandably quite upset at this decision, which was most likely a poor one. After a poor start to the tournament it wasn’t long before reports in Australia suggested that there was a rift in the squad between Mark Viduka supporters and Lucas Neill supporters. It’s clear that this rift would have a damaging effect on the team, and they appeared undisciplined throughout the tournament. In the end Australia were knocked out in the quarter-finals after a disappointing performance. There’s more to greed than money. And to be fair to Lucas Neill, I have to say that I am a fan of his. He’s gone out of his way to try and squash these allegations, stating that there was more to his move to West Ham than money. He’s definitely gone out of his way to prove his loyalty to West Ham and the national team, and is proving to be a good captain.

Firstly, £60k per week is hugely exaggerated, that's not a fact that he earns this, it's an assumption, and a massive overstatement at that. Of coarse, Liverpool fans really can't beleive why a football would turn down the occaisional game at Liverpool for a regular spot at West Ham and even the captaincy. Well, perhaps he want's to play football? Perhaps the fact that Rafa didn't even appear in the negotiations made him think that Liverpool weren't too fussed about signing him? Why would he sign for a club where the manager doesn't even show up to discuss the transfer? West Ham made him feel wanted, and gave him a place in the first team. The £60k wages is an easy believable story to publish, and easier for the moaning scousers to stomach, afterall, why would anyone turn down such a wonderful club as Liverpool for any other reason than money?

Let's get something straight Neill IS on 60k a week. He wanted a rise to 80k 6 months ago. He turned down 40k a week offer from Liverpool. I suspect the often overlooked fact is that he wanted to live in London. Other than that he will always remain Lucash.

So, money aside he joined a club in Europe for one in a relegation battle. "I've seen the shopping list" he said. We can all have a shopping list. And then he expects us to all be nice to him when he returns to kick lumps out of MGP. Should be ashamed of himself, greedy bastard!!

D C Perhaps he fancied playing in front of a full house every week?! People leave jobs and choose others for more money in every single walk of life you can imagine. Why should footie be any different? Maybe he wanted to be part of a new build at Upton Park with himself as captain and therefore figurehead what's unambitious about that?

Good bit of business by Eggy at the time.... the transfer fee was only about £1.5m and in the midst of our relegation battle the only way we were gonna attract any half decent (and I'd describe Neill as half decent) players to sign, was to overpay them. Its how we stayed up (despite what McCabe and his sympathisers would have us believe). If I was Neill I would bear this in mind as he heads into his upcoming contract review.
