Selling Nicolas Anelka to Chelsea for £15m in January just about assured the Trotters of Championship football next season.

The 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford does not signal that Bolton Wanderers are going down, but a run of five successive defeats as we approach what Sir Alex Ferguson calls “squeaky bum time” does.
Of these five defeats one could argue that they included games against Manchester United and Liverpool, but in both games they were comprehensively beaten and in their remaining eight games they still have to play Arsenal and Chelsea who are also likely to brush aside Gary Megson’s team.

Without any axe to grind I think Bolton will stay up. Three points against Man C will be a start. They are still playing with a great deal of spirit and have been extremely unlucky to have been mugged on several occasions particularly against Portsmouth and Wigan. Megson has got them battling again and in bringing in Cahill he has pulled off a coup. If Nolan is fit they can still do it in a poor Premier league.
