Liverpool's four to walk the plank
Rafa Benitez has been both excellent and terrible in the transfer market, but his challenge now is to reduce his squad over the summer.

Rafa Benitez's few seasons at Liverpool have been full of debate. From the team's performances in the domestic league to their triumphs in Europe, one topic that seems to rise above all others is his dealing in the transfer market.
There have been some superb signings, such as Luis Garcia, Fernando Torres, Xabi Alonso, Daniel Agger and Pepe Reina. All have come to Anfield and done exactly what was expected of them, some even more so! Unfortunately, there remain a few elements of Rafa's squad that need to be cut loose for this ship to sail to Premier League glory.Andriy Voronin - The Ukrainian striker arrived at Anfield on a free transfer during the summer window. His nomadic style focusing on brute strength seemed a good fit for the Anfield club that perhaps lacked a strong presence up front. Although showing promise in pre-season with some impressive performances, Voronin has yet to adjust to the pace of the Premier League.
He just doesn't seem comfortable and this has not gone unnoticed by Benitez who seems to have dropped him to the very bottom of his pecking order. While it is arguable that anything a free player brings you is positive, but with Voronin finding himself so out of favour - is there any point continuing with false hope for a player in his twilight that will never be good enough?Harry Kewell - Has had a desperately unlucky time at Liverpool ever since he joined the club. Injuries have hampered his Anfield career and even when fit, he has struggled to get back into the pace of things. Being forced off injured in both of the club's most famous games in recent times, the Aussie must have realised by now that his future at Anfield just isn't meant to be.
Nobody can question his ability or desire, and his never-say-die attitude is the sole reason he has lasted this long. However, the club have got increasingly impatient with the winger and his contract looks as if it will be left to run its course before being released. Rafa would do well to concede defeat against the ever-cruel football gods on this one.Charles Itandje - Liverpool's French Under-21 keeper has struggled to break anywhere near the first team. Although technically second-choice with Benitez loaning out his other two choice keepers, Itandje has failed to impress the Anfield faithfully with the handful of appearances given to him. Perhaps it is too early in his career to make judgements, but the young Frenchman simply seems completely out of his depth when it comes to the Premier League or even Carling Cup.

How long does it take the average foreign player to get adjusted to the PL? Wenger says 6 months, which is about as long as it took Eduardo to get regular playing time at Arsenal. Voronin has had all of about 3 months in the EPL before he got injured. So why do you slate and deride him at every opportunitiy? Is it his haircut?

While I encourage sportingos open forum for would be writers, there should be some sort of quality control or this is what you get. This is a rehash of a story I have read on this site by two different people already, You make the third. It's lazy and is unworthy of an article it is more suited to a post on a forum. It's an easy KOP out, if you don't have the time or skill to write a refreshing new story then rehash someone Else's work and complain about a few stars who are not pulling their weight, that way everyone will agree with your evaluation of these stars and your article will be a success. Wrong, it shows you to be not only uncreative and lazy but also without the smarts to do a little research before you commit this dross to virtual paper. Itandje isn't a french U21 player he is an EX U21 player who while may be worth a drop to the reserves, would look kind of stupid in the youth team as you suggest at the age of 25. Pennant who you suggest has been pushed out by the new boy Babel actually plays on the right hand side, where as babel has started the majority of his games on the left hand side so they are not actually competing for the same place. Pennant does have himself to blame as his form has been inconsistent and he gives the ball away far too often and while he has shown flashes of genius, it is not regular enough to deserve a starting place because 8/10 games he is below par. Pennant actually lost his place to Kuyt, who while not scoring a lot of goals is filling in on that right hand side in Liverpools new formation. So seriously next time you consider writing try this. 1/ get an original idea instead of reading "The Shabby Six" by Joe clash. 2/ do some research to avoid looking like a fool 3/ have some knowledge of the subject you write about

Posting the same bleeding articles over and over again, we know which players are crap and should be bombed out. Reader's don't need to be told 5 or 6 times by different writers.

What a long way to look rather silly Mr. Holmes, especially when you actually tell other people to do their homework. Perhaos you should do your own and take a gander at the 'Select' articles. Don't blame the writers for working within a parameter. For your own pleasure, though, I am a Liverpool fan of 20 years, and can guarentee you that I am standing in the Kop more often than yourself - so please don't patronise ME about my lack of knowledge reguarding LFC. Perhaps a link to your own extensive works on the history of Anfield would surfice? No? Okay then. -FOR THE LAST TIME- All artivles are CLEARLY headlined for a reason, BECAUSE THE COMPETITIONS ENCOURAGE WRITERS TO PIT THEIR WITTS AGAINST EACHOTHER IN WRITING THE BEST MATERIAL ON THE SAME SUBJECT. *****YOU. ARE. NOT. FORCED. TO READ. ANYTHING.**** If you're sick of hearing about it, DON'T CLICK THE ARTICLE! My GOD.

This is a terrible piece, Itandje hasn't been that poor and was actually very strong in the Carling Cup loss to Chelsea, in which LFC could have been destroyed if he hadn't made several great saves....

This is a poor article
Second post in a row that your opening sentence has been wrong! Please, quote me when i've 'claimed to be a writer'...yeah mate, i'm a writer, a real pro, that's why i'm posting on a blog site! Really did let Mr.Brain have an Easter lay-in, hay? I carried on reading your post, but stopped at the fundamental flaw of using TYPOS as a valid agument, then going on do typo yourself! Tell you what mate, you're lucky the government gives handouts.
*PS* That made me laugh! I actually called you! To be honest, I thought you'd say, and this was the exact line that went through my head, 'ive been a fan for 40 years, my grandads ashes are scattered over Anfield'...still pretty damn close, instead you went with the cliche 'fan since me old man took me to a game'. Haha! Cheers, that brought a smile to my face :D

criticisms can be a bit too harsh without considering many issues. i believe benitez's transfer dealings has been exemplary. nobody buys 100% good players, the great wenger's transfers incl franny jeffers and some guy called grimandi, to name a few. i wont even need to tell you about fergie's, i guess... the key thing about benitez is his willingness and breavery to cut his losses, fast. morientes, gonzales, and especially kronkamp! so to put the word terrible to describe his transfer dealings i believe is just too harsh. voronin is injured, although he shows signs of brillinace early on, he soon faded. i wont be too disappointed to see him go, but you cant complain too much as he was on a free, and his injury would just make me close my eyes and give him a chance, grudgingly as a fan. kewell.i guess you got it quite ok. but i somehow still trust him. without really knowing how he behaves daily, it's realy tough for us to know,so it'sa matter of opinions with limited knowledge. however, his wage bill will save us some cash flow if e is let goand i think that could weigh in on any policies surrounding him. itanje. i'd just say, its not easy to have a quality reserve keeper who's willing to sit on the bench forever, considering that reina is only in his mid-20's. if all goes well for pepe, and liverpool, it could be a 15 year wait to outshine this man!! as for penant, i have to respectfully disagree and ask you to consider that he has been outwith a broken leg. i dont know if you have been injured playing football before, i have and the feeling when you start playing again is very different. the confidence, the little twists and turns; a lobbing pass to the right would end up as a shooting strength hit right down the middle, low.... it takes time to build up. look at xabi, he had been indifferent for the past 2 months when he first came back from injury, but given time and opportunity, we are beginning to see the xabi we saw when he first joined. i'd also like to point out that if you dont realise it, penant is integral to us reaching to the QF of the CL. he made 2 assists. the pass to gerard was nothing to crow about but the ball that found kuyt for the all important first goal, brillinat, in my opinion. not to mention his hard work and ersistence in getting the first goal against newcastle, who were playing superbly and looked like deserving a draw until his intervention and started the flood. perisstence and a bit of skill, i dont think we can ask for more. he needs to brush up on his scoring skills and he'd offer us something down the right. i wouldnt sell him. in conclusion, i'd like to say that we are in somegood form, mainly coz of rafa's use of some consistent players as well as the team playing well to the current 4-2-3-1 formation. it's good to keep building on this while it's still hot, andsome players may not be suited, at the moment. let's see if they can find their footing, and how the tactics might change when needed, and some of these players may well prove to be useful.

nice piece of comment mate

A good comment there mate. What i'll say to that is - as I said in my article, I would LOVE to be proved wrong. Nothing would give me more delight than these players contributing enough to stay. Who would have thought Smicer would be one of the heroes to drag us to glory in Istanbul?

What about 4 AUTHORS TO WALK THE PLANK?
by Billy Styles on March 26, 2008
Which two keepers were loaned out? I'm guessing Mihaylov was (But not sure). Who were they?
by Kenny Harper on March 31, 2008
I think you've been very good to keep it down to 4, I can think of at least 20 players I would want rid out of that set up if I was unfortunate enough to be part fo the dark side. Good Luck with that!
Just Keep Gerrard( Apart from the big games hes quality) and Torres, the rest can be sold on.
