Spurs must axe stagnant Lennon and give Taarabt a chance
With nothing left to play for in the remaining few games, Juande Ramos should give the wonderkid tipped to be the new Zidane an extended run in place of the disappointing Aaron Lennon.

Over the past month or so a growing list of criticism has come from Spurs fans with regards to 20-year-old winger Aaron Lennon.
The young player has undoubtedly got scintillating pace, but hasn’t added to his skills since he signed in 2005, hence the increased frustrations.
Lennon’s pace is sadly accompanied by a limited footballing brain; too often the diminutive winger flatters to deceive, with a lack of a final ball like an ebullient and confident stand-up comedian unable to deliver a half-decent punchline.
The whispers are that Lennon hasn't progressed as well as he should, he offers us coquettish flashes of his talent, but fails to consistently deliver. To truly appease his detractors Lennon has to improve in terms of passing, crossing and shooting and bring them up to his brilliant ability to get past players with his pace.

I seem to be alone in that I do not think Lenneon has been as bad as reported. I thought against Birmingham he created havoc everytime he ran at them and although his crosses need working on he has pace that can't be found in many other players. I agree Taarabt should be given a run but why not instead of Malbranque who works hard but generally gets nowhere.

The young Frenchman is nowhere near to a PL start. There would have to be a change in the rules to allow one ball for him and one for everybody else. He just puts his head down and runs.

I 100% agree with this article. EVERY single time I have EVER seen Taraabt play for us, he has managed to awe the fans, or completely changes a game (e.g. West Ham at Upton park last season). So what if he's greedy? That is the easiest trait to iron out from a game. The bigger picture is - he is undoubtedly a brilliant footballer, despite his young age. We've seen flashes of brilliance from him and he's only had minimal amount of time to show his stuff. Just look for him on YouTube which already holds an impressive reel of footage of his minimal football time. Pretty sure he's been doing well in the reserves as well. fact is - he needs a chance in the EPL to really prove us right or wrong and untill ten, no one should judge him, especially not negatively. As for Lennon - his lacklustre performances spells the end of his Tottenham career in my opinion (of course). I love him to bits andstill vividly remember his first ever appearance and me telling literally everyone about him after the game. If anything, he has more than compensated the miniscule 1mill we paid for him... unlike Darren Bent for example... But that's a different story ;).

I would like to see taarabt get a chance but on the left wing or centre. and lennon to be given the chance to get his form back so he is ready for next season
by Dan Walters on March 24, 2008
Yeah Taarabt probably deserves a run out towards the end of the season but i don't think hes anywhere near s good as lennon. People have been saying Lennon has been struggling for form recently, they obviously didn't watch the carling cup final, the semi-final against ars*nal and the psv game. He does need to improve his crossing though.

Last time I ever comment at this joke of a place. Taarabt isn't even a right winger. So how exactly does he fit the bill as a replacement for Lennon? Who are you Ed? Do you even watch or know anything about football?

I wonder how long it will take for Spurs to see that Lennon is a pacy wide player who can't cross a ball to save his life and, even worse! Chimbonda is a headless chicken of a player, who has no idea about positioning or how to mark or head a ball with any direction. Chimbonda alone must have cost us around 10 points this season! Whilst Lennon must be frustrating the hell out of our two quality strikers.

best midfield talent since gazza.should be on the bench then ease him into the team from the subs bench. experience is whats missing about time he gets some.

If spurs had another great winger like Lennon on the left i think it would be difficult for teams to keep sticking two players on him each time he gets the ball. We could keep switching wings and stretching the opposition defence. Hopefully Ramos can find a good left winger but until then lets give taarabt a go

Why does Fabregas still get plaudits and hyberbole when he's done next to nothing for months but Lennon as an Englishman gets stick from his own fans despite raising his game for the big matches and providing nine assists this season? Think back to the 5-1 - which of them stepped up to the plate? which of them crumbled under the pressure? Which scored while the other passed innefectually to his opponents a dozen times. Both have potential - both could be world beaters one day - so why do we English turn on the local lad while lauding the spaniard?

Yeah, thats right... Aaron overtaken by Luke Young, the ex-spurs now Boro right back. Do you mean Ashley Young, the flying Villa winger? Do you watch football?
Sorry Ed - I just had a read through some of your other posts - I didn't realise before my first comment that you don't watch football and instead just write about it. The one about arsenal's youthful 'real' football deserving the champions league is particularly poor - glossing over that spurs and ManU attack just as much, score more goals, and with just as youthful sides. (arsenal v chelsea - av.25 years of age - Spurs v Pompey - av 25 years of age)

I can't say I am pleased; to hear all the negative comments in regards to Aaron, but I do agree he needs to practice getting in that 'killing pass' at the end of his amazing runs... and then he will be 'world class'. Also... with nothing to play for now (though I would dearly love to finish above the spammers), should'nt Juande give Bent a few games, and try out players like Peckart, Ifil, and some of the 'Younger element' who have been impressing in the reserves and splinter teams?
by Spurs Supporter on March 24, 2008
Why not stick Lennon behind the front two seeing as he can't cross? His pace would scare the crap out of most central defenders, they are usually slower then full backs.

As someone who has been to a fair number of games this season, Im not surprised at the stick Lennon is getting. However: he is only suffering the same problem that the rest of the Spurs midfield is suffering from: "inconsistency". Huddlestone has the passing range of a young Glenn Hoddle, but cannot make any use of his size when winning the ball. Zokora's defensive play can be fantastic, but what use is that when its usually his wayward passing that brings out his defensive runs in the first place. Jenas and Malbranque can both be world beaters on their day - but they can be non existant the next. And Teemu Tainio could be that defensive rock we have wanted for so long - if he didnt get injured everyime he made a tackle. Which brings us to Lennon, who has pace, guile and quick feet.... just shame the final ball ends up with a goal kick, comfortable save or throw-in for the other side. A bit of working could sort them all out - but Ramos may not have the time and may be able to identify replacements that fit the bill now.

Taarabt is quality in waiting, but he needs to be brought into the first team gradually.Lennon is far from stagnant, simply because he has quiet spells. He can and does change games on a regular basis.Taarabt will become a first team member but needs experience.Anyway what a marvelous talent to have in the wings.
by Terry Watkins on March 24, 2008
I sit in the park lane lower and travle away with the lads as well. I can see the point some people are making about Aaron but he has been injured for the last 3 months and has not shaken it off. But I do agree he needs to put a better cross in but he is not the only one
by dan on March 24, 2008
taarabt is an awsome prospect and i am gutted to see he is not even included on the bench sometimes i agree maybe he is a little greedy but at the end of the day what he can do with the ball amazing in the sense of great skill great vision and a good shot on him. he is proving to be a very promising player and would love to see more of him in a spurs shirt or we could poss loose him which would be rediculous.

Its not just Lennon whose failed to deliver, the biggest waste of space is Janus, in his position he should be dictating the midfield, and hes just not good enough, I'm fed up hearing what a good engine hes got, I would prefer a better player
by JJ on March 24, 2008
Taarabt will get much more of a look in next season when the 7 sub rule is in effect. At the moment we can only have 5 and need players who are currently a bit less luxury than Taarabt and can cover a few positions.

its like what ramos has said everyone gets a bad time in the game and this is lennons, he is still young so getting earlier ruther then later is best.
by Pablo Robitzioni on March 24, 2008
NIcely jumped on the bandwagon sportingo. Truly awesome reporting... Ahem..balls.
by zinedine on March 24, 2008
taarabt is not as good as some here think and not as bad as the knockers argue either. he is a raw talent with brilliant skills and an eye both for goal and for the pass. he has no defensive discipline at all, however and this is key to Ramos's thinking. AT is the kind of players who rips weak teams apart (llok up the youtube clip of AT against St Patrick's - fantastic); but also a player who can fade when not used for impact, i.e. in the last 15 minutes. i too would like to see where this kid could get to, but sensibly the best policy would be to loan him back to Lens for a season where he would get plenty of action - and draft him back in with more maturity. THEN we would really see something ...
