Why Manchester United's high-flyers will come unstuck against Roma
Fergie's boys may have thumped the Italians 7-1 last season, but if Luciano Spalletti's reborn stars can nullify Cristiano Ronado, United could well be heading out of the Champions League.

With the countdown to the Champions League quarter-finals quickening, the argument that Manchester United will get turned over by Roma seems to be increasingly valid.
Everyone is acutely aware of the recent history between the sides. United faced Roma in the group stages, beating them 1-0 at home and drawing in Italy, having demolished them 7-1 at Old Trafford in last year's quarter-final. Sadly, these meetings have also been marred by violence, with 12 stabbings outside the Stadio Olimpico last season, and five United fans knifed prior to this season's meeting in Rome.
United appear to have weathered the challenges of Arsenal and Chelsea in the league, sitting five points clear at the top. However, despite their successes domestically, there are still cracks in their formation which Roma could expose.
It's difficult to picks holes in the Red Devils squad, particularly when they arguably have the best player in world football wearing their No.7 shirt. But when Cristiano Ronaldo is off his game, United need to dig deep for a back-up plan.

This is the most ridiculous article that i have ever read. United will dump Roma out of the champions league. Ronaldo will win World player of the year this year. Are you going to print an apology when that happens?
by sacchi on March 25, 2008
u wrote this cos ur a mn utd fan... u never know wat can happen dude and man utd have a history about loosing against their under dogs
by Buscha on March 25, 2008
This is absolute tripe. You seem to forget to mention that United have a water-tight defence in vidic and ferdinand who have conceded the least goals in all competitions when playing together. Your article suggests that manchester united have only one player that can win the game for them and if he's marked well enough they are no threat. So Rooney, Scholes, Nani, Anderson, Tevez and Giggs (to name just a few) can't score goals? You're an idiot. Ronaldo was 'nullified' against liverpool on saturday, other players made the game what it was...especially Rooney, who had a blinder. The idiot who wrote this article just wants to see Man Utd out of the competition and i'm affraid a shit piece of speculative journalism isn't going to do that

you can't get more bias then this, the person who wrote this their points which is written isn't logical. I bet this person supports Roma!
by World Beater on March 25, 2008
I am sorry but this is a very poor article no matter who you support. To suggest United are a one trick pony is bordering upon insane. Why is it United can get wins without Ronaldo in the squad but struggle without Rooney?? Hopefully Roma and whoever else we come up against believe the same, that way Rooney can take their teams apart like he generally does against every team. Goals are not what Rooney is about, he links the team together, More of a kaka than a Shearer.. And what about the rest of the squad?? Even Fletcher is a match winner, we just have more of everything(other than strikers, although who wouldn't want what we do have!!). We can change and adapt better than before and it will take a better side than Roma to stop us..

Fellow utd supporters Infact any supporters, dont take this guy seriously he's a wind up merchant. the article is nonsense. Granted anybody can beat anybody on the day, but this guys comments are not even objective its almost slander!
by Zae on March 25, 2008
And when he does not play at all, United thump Arsenal 4-0, Aston Villa 4-1... And this is the Roma team that lost at Juventus, was wiped the floor with Inter at the Olimpico and could not get past a back four of Simpson, Pique, Evans and O'Shea. Not to mention being spectacularly outplayed at home by an ageing, injury-hit, mediocre Milan side that has clearly deteriorated a lot since last season.

I can admit it can be a good website sometimes but the state of articles on this website are really poor and lack the right facts and about manutd being a one man team what the hell is going on in this article manutd go missing without ronaldo.. what bout rooney rio vidic scholes carrick these are the main players that matter and dont forget vds they have been sensational this season and have scored the most goals in the premier league and havent lost a single game in this years champions league campaign and we have played roma twice and have beaten them once this season and a very weakened team for the italy leg and still were capable of a draw... cmon please right the article in a way people can discuss about facts... btw manutd will eventually win the chamions league the team that might answer that is barca... we will see aniwayz..

rome could erase man u. if you watch both leagues, if you know football widely, you know that roma on one of their many good days could wipe up any team in the world. their problem is their consistency. man is still a one tricker. they'll be playing a team, on a good day, who can outpass them and get more scoring chances than they can. they can also totally collapse in defense because some times they play so offensively they forget about d. but that's the prob with a lot of english teams too. they took out real and on paper real looks better than man u. sorry, but they do. all i can say is last year. milan. house of cards - man u. whichever. going to be an interesting game. i think epl watchers should have a chance to see roma at their peak. after all. it was only really once that they got outplayed, wasn't it? every shot went in. think that'll really happen again? and for the guy who said ser a. is the 3rd league, you don't really watch much but epl, do you? btw, your national team is coached by a third league coach. smile.
by thes on March 26, 2008
the author is obviously ignorant, and to respond to the poster above me, you are clearly a fool, if the Serie A was as good as you claim, enlighten me on the fact that Inter and Milan were beaten by English teams, with a third Italian loss coming along.
by p k on March 26, 2008
ignorance. The person who wrote this article shouldn't have the responsibility to write a childrens book. Fire him

The madness of manu is very funny. First wi ouldve said personl opinion on the roma might win but when you say real have a better team on paper tha manu, YOU ARE THE ONE WHO IS MAD. Real sucks. Real is wack. Which player in their team is better than any player in manu. GO position for position. Somw people need to think.

this is bull. ronaldo is currently one of the top scorers in the champtions league. he got to the final of the european cup wit his country. the EPL is prob the best league in the world. how many english teams are still in it. yeah thats rite all of them, so it most be hard to do it in the EPL. and to say united are a one man team is just silly. most of the games we lost this year we were missing rooney. Kaka was not tat great against arsenal.suppose to be the best player in the world.

Overconfident U, can I just say sucking someones manhood is not as good as sucking a womans fun bags. When you have wiped your mouth please think before commenting, what a wally!
by Lebron James on March 26, 2008
I think this is really stupid. Roma is a giant one man team probably much more than Man Utd which is saying alot. When Roma plays without Totti they're a completely different side - in an extremely bad way. That being said Man Utd isn't so good without Ronaldo but still good enough to beat Roma. I reckon the game won't be wipeout like last season it will be closer but Man Utd will definately come out on top. After seeing what they did against Liverpool they look like they can beat any team.

don't forget the best defence in the premiership...
by nick robinson on March 26, 2008
but alas, the sort of tripe you often read on the internet. I just laughed
by Jamie Zammitt on March 26, 2008
we keep hearing this nonsense!!! Ronaldo was one of if no the best player the Euro 2004. He also was one of the best at the last world cup. He scored against MIlan (Ok he didnt perform to his best-but he is human). This myth going around that he doesnt perform well in the big games is totally unfounded. He is also the Champions League top goal scorer and we forget he is a winger. What r u goin to say about that. You can criticise some of his goasl but hey all top players will score all kinds of goals. Good ones and bad ones, but statistics are statistics. Ofcourse the big teams have better players and it is harder for ronaldo to express himself against the top players because they go about stopping here as he is the main threat. That is football. Anyways enuf bull. Let the football do the talking as ronaldo has done this year yet again, and allow the idiots who just seem to either envy him or hate him talk the crap and get nowhere in their lives. take care
by franco mizzi on March 26, 2008
Who the hell is this joker anyway?? Barnsley beat Liverpool and Chelsea so what is this guy trying to tell us? That anyone can beat anyone on their day? Then yes I agree but the entire article stinks of jealousy, must be a dipper/scouser, hatred and above all stupidity that not even my 11 year old son would come up with. Get real my friend and get yourself a life.

It's important to remember that this website is just a weblog. It has no relevance or importance at all, and is merely the opinion of some ill-educated people who's journalism wasn't good enough for their local paper. If you read articles like this one and 'Why Manchester United will never see the real Wayne Rooney', along with countless other idiotic ramblings, it becomes obvious that the writers of these pieces are just trying to provoke a reaction rather than produce credible, respectable articles. There is rarely any factual grounding to Sportingo's journalism, it's just designed to wind people up (mostly United fans). Most of the replies have successfully contradicted this piece, but of course you'll never get the writer coming on here to reply or apologise. It's almost not worth the effort of writing a post.

Pointless article, Ronaldo is yet to show it in UCl. Euro Championships and World Cup Finals my foot. Current joint top scorer in the UCL , Part of the team of the tournament in Euro 2004, if not for the rooney incident, he would have won the young player of the tournament in WC 2006. Mate do yourself a favor and check Portugal's record before and after the emergence of Ronaldo. Stupid article.
