Inexperience is costing Arsenal points, not the loss of Henry

William Gallas: Losing control? (gettyimages.com)

The Gunners have dropped off top spot due to a lack of form, inexperience and how well their rivals are playing. The impact of the loss of TH14 has been greatly exaggerated.

''Wenger admitted after the Chelsea game that his side lacked 'defensive authority' and were vunerable''

As Arsenal drop five points behind Manchester United in the race for the Premier League, having been top for most of the season, some people having been wondering if Arsene Wenger did the right thing in selling talisman Thierry Henry last summer.

The simple fact is that Arsenal haven’t won anything for since the 2005 FA Cup, and for two of those seasons Henry was still with them. Not only that, but Henry didn’t actually play that well in his last season andwas plagued with injury.

Wenger has a record of getting rid of players at the right time, and I think he has done that with the French star. His performances for Barcelona have been patchy at best, and his injury problems have continued.

In all honesty, if Henry’s departure was going to affect Wenger’s team it would have been at the start of the season. But the fact is current players have benefited from his departure. Rather than being trapped in his shadow they have had the freedom to flourish.

Players like Emmanuel Adebayor, Aleksandr Hleb and Mathieu Flamini have hit previously unknown heights of form this season as they have been allowed to play to their own strengths rather than seeking to enable Henry to play to his. They have said as much in the press over the past few months and you can really see the difference in their play.

In light of all of this, I think we can safely say Henry’s departure has nothing to do with Arsenal’s hesitant form at this point of the season. But this does leave the question open. Why have they faltered?

Perhaps the biggest reason for Arsenal dropping off the top of the table is inexperience. Of the top four, they have by far the youngest and most inexperienced squad. They are undoubtedly hugely talented and arguably play the best football in Europe on their day. But many of the squad players have never been involved in a title race this close to the end of the season - and it seems to be taking its toll.

They just aren’t able to grind out results when they aren’t playing well, unlike Manchester United and Chelsea. Their recent run of results, combined with that hideous injury to Eduardo, seems to have hit their confidence and the behaviour of captain William Gallas is not helping. According to press (which I concede is no guarantee of accuracy). he is currently unpopular with both his manager and the other players.

Sadly, only compounding this problem for Wenger, some of his other key players have suffered a drop in form over the past four games which has left them winless. Adebayor has not been so clinical in front of goal, the midfielders have not been able to find the killer pass they were so adept at getting just a few weeks ago, even Kolo Toure has not been as solid as he was.

Wenger admitted after the Chelsea game that his side lacked 'defensive authority' and were vunerable. This wasn't the case at the start of the season.

Finally, you cannot discount the way Manchester United and Chelsea are playing at the moment. They have been relentless in getting results and there is nothing Arsenal can do about that. All they can do is concentrate on their own game and try to get their season back on track.

Wenger must be applauded for giving his youngsters the chance to prove themselves in regular competition. And it will no doubt lead to another title in the coming years. But we shouldn’t be too hasty - the season isn’t over yet, and there is still plenty of time for an Arsenal return to form.

This has been the most exciting title race in a long time, and let’s hope it goes right to the wire.

Yep, along with the players must be inexperienced refs and linesmen as they seem to not know what the offside rule is and when there is a penalty or not! no one seems to want to deal with this fac, well just people who are not arsenal fans! Go Gunners!

This is more like it graham.instead of some folks just criticising arsenal and "creating problems" like gilberto said.also pointing fingers at wengers tactics and unrest is complete shambles!!! U have pointed out the right things wrong with the team, loss of form, confidence and the obvious inexperience.also u have highlighted a ray of hope.you know what?i agree with u. really nice piece.thums up!!!now lets hope we can get some form going on.i think van persie holds the key to arsenal returning to form.we saw flashes of it against chelsea on sunday. i just feel if he starts playing like we know he can, then i fel he will encourage others.till then we hope...

i dont believe all the hype about arsenal losing there form , they have had a big shove by the very people that are demanding respect , the referees and and linesmen , yes they should be respected but they should also only be respected if they can do there jobs correctly. decisions in the wigan , middlesbrough , birmingham and chelsea games have cost us a lot of points and they were very blatently wrong decisions that there was no coming back from like the last minute penalty for birmingham which wasnt a penalty , adabeyors goal ruled offside when it was played to him by a middlesbrough player , the offside rule in the middlesbrough game when even before that a free kick was given against adabeyor when it was boatang who did the shoulder barge and fell over . chelsea's first goal was offside by a mile , would they have even scored if it wasnt for that . we have been robbed of at least 8 points in our last 5 matches but no one gives a damn .

Well said marco tardelli. It's all a conspiracy by the whole of football to deny Arsenal the title and all other trophies. It's just not on with not only the Premier league and EUFA getting together to target your side. No other clubs have had any wrong decisions go against them and it just not fair to Arsenal. I'm sure with your lobbying opposing teams and referees in future will be order to stand back, adnire the magnifence of Arsenal and let them walk the ball into the net. Opponents will be necessary merely for the necessary restart after each goal before giving possession back. Don't cry with your if this and if that. If my aunty had b*lls she'd be my uncle baut she ain't.

i have to disagree with you john(lol) but marco is right. If it happens every other game that is o.k.,but in consecutive games in which arsenal drops points?.Many people have given various reasons for possibly losing the league ,but the fact is clear, if ARSENAL lose the league it starts from these series of perplexing decisions occuring in corresponding games.

rexes at least you try to give a balanced view rather than marco's infantile version however after watching football for 50+ years I could have ranted about so called conspiracies costing teams prizes but it's football. Decisions have gone for and against teams all the time. It's the way that some fans cry, blame the refs, conspiracies by authorities but overlook decisions that go in their favour. I'm sure that fans of other clubs could make the same claims of decisions going Arsenal's way in their matches earlier in the season. As a neutral I beleive that over 38 games the best team usually comes out on top. Luck goes both ways and it's in their own hands over the whole season.

After the AC match our players talked about the double of the pl and cl. i had my doubts and I've been vindicated.the reason for the slump is obvious to all. The razor thi n squad cannot cope with two mathes starting from late Feb. Awthought his second team was good enuf bout has been proven wrong. In addition he chose not to buy in Jan because it could contradict his policy of buying youngsters and nurturing them. This sums up Arsenal's current malaise.

I have to disagree with some of you comments Graham. Firstly there has been a dip in form, but to compare us to Man U and Chelsea is really a non starter- their squads are much bigger and more prepared for a long hard run in. The young players have been amazing for us and I don't think it's a question of inexperience, It must have been that same inexperience that took the team to the final of the Champions League and the final of the Carling Cup in successive seasons. It is sad to say it but the main reasons lie at Wengers feet: 1. Squad not large enough - we don't have enough strength in depth. This can be seen in the need to bring back players from injury who are not at their best such as Van P and Diaby. Manu U and Chelsea have not needed to do this and have tended to have coped with their major inury periods better. 2. We could have spent some money to make the squad stronger (we don't need to go overboard). But conservatively speaking we have anywhere from £80 - £130 million to spend in the pot. I remember two main reasons for moving to the Emirates - a. More fans can see the games. b. We can generate enough money to compete with any team (self sufficient) in world football for transfers. There were good players avaliable that would added to our squad that we missed out on, Torres, Abidal and Ribbery to mention 3. It wouldn't have mentioned this but in Jan and Feb, Wenger said he had a squad big enough to win the premership this year - but with all small squads they get stretched and they strat to fray, We are now seeing that before us. I think the Milan game was a bit of a smoke screen and hid a lot. If the squad was being stretched because we were in all 4 cups that would be a bit more unstandable. I live and pray that the team comes through - like all gooners I'm sure we all want the team to pull through this dip. We can do it and through the nature of football hope Chelski and Man U drop enough to give us all a season to remember for a life time. :)
