Is Rafa Benitez a spent force at Liverpool after blowing £150m?
Champions of Europe – but chumps in the Premier League. And only two Anfield stars would get into the other Big Four sides.

Liverpool have not won the league since 1989-90 – that’s approaching 18 years since Liverpool Football club last won the title, and we are constantly told, “a club like Liverpool should be winning the league”. I don’t really understand these types of statements – after all, just because someone does something a couple of times it doesn’t give them an automatic right to be able to do it again, never more so than in football. Using this analogy, I might try and get into Goodison for free next week. I could always use the excuse that I have been going in there for nearly 40 years.
The latest manager to try to break this cycle is Rafa Benitez. In the four years he has been in charge of Liverpool, he has spent an absolute fortune on players.
It is reported he has spent a total of £150million and has a net spend of approaching £90million. He has won a couple of cups (so I believe). In his first season in charge, although it wasn’t his group of players, he did take the team to the European Cup final. Even though they looked totally outclassed for a vast majority of the game, they showed great spirit to come back from 3-0 down at half-time and win on penalties.
But since that night things have taken a bit of a constant dive downwards. They reached another Champions League final last season, but were outclassed and really shouldn’t have graced such a final, if all things were equal. They just weren’t good enough.
Also. they have won an FA Cup, funnily enough on penalties again – there seems to be a bit of a theme here, but all things considered many Reds do not regard what Rafa has done as real progress – he has turned “the Worst Team ever to win the Champions League” into a team who now struggle to beat Birmingham at home. And all at a huge cost of £150million.
When he took over, he did have some quality players in his squad and he has brought in no less than 48, striving to find the gems he needs to challenge the top teams, but unable to mount a serious title bid. His latest attempts to do this seem a bit more successful after he spent more than £20million on Fernando Torres, who looks a great player – but I suppose if you throw enough darts at the board eventually you’ll hit the bull’s-eye.

Wrong without even reading it. Masc would get into any of the big four, it's widely agreed he is the best DM in the Prem. Gerrard would too, as would Torres. But yeah, I dson't think many people will read it, they'll just see the Everton badge, the title, and then remember they've heard it all before. The question should really be...with all the cash Moyes has thrown around (I dare you to post the figure, we all know it!), how have Everton not even come CLOSE to winning ANYTHING? Must be really boring being Blue, the only opinions you have around about other clubs!
by Karl Evans on March 28, 2008
Moyes has spent a little under £80 million, but he's sold just over £50 million's worth of players (All be it, a lot of that was Rooney) and his net spend is £24.4 million - which turns out to be around £4 million for every season he has been in charge. Do you think Benitez could work on a budget like that and turn a relegation battling team into a team that is challenging for European honours in 7 seasons? With his record - I doubt it. Everton's time will come, we know it will and we have patience - unlike you deluded fools across the park. You think you have the god given right to win everything you enter, sadly your team doesn't even come close to that of the big three.

MOyes has spent 80m pounds in 5 years, he has a net spend of 18m pounds, and has turned us from perenial underachievers into a team who is more than capable of getting 4th, although to be fair that really isnt much to shout about anymore, Liverpool have managed to take away the joy of that now by making teams who do that look so poor.

Averaging 15 million season spend as season on that basis without adding Premiership finishes 5th, 3rd and 4th and FA Cup Winners and Carling Cup runners up money that Benitez has earned while in charge, Benitez on a how had to sell to recoup to buy players. Therfore this article is nothing but another rubbish tripe from a Bluenose. How can an average spend of 15 million make Benitez get Liverpool to title winners is nigh on impossible, the rate was a lot lower also until last summer and this January windows till we signed Torres, Babel, Skrtel and Mascherano.
Forgot to add Momo Sissoko's sale to Juventus which was 8 million also.

On tyrabsfers is 85m pounds, they are the 2nd biggest spenders secodn only to Chelsea, teasm who have won the league like chelsea are Man Utd who have spent 7m less and Arsenal who actualkly have a net profit on transfers of some 9m pounds, im sorry but the fcta that Lafa, sorry I mean Rafa has only spent less than 1 team in the whole league doesnt account to very good reading, because as it stands they are way behind 3 teams in the same league.

Rafa has even been there 5 years. Your counting Houllier's expenditure the season before which was 23.5 million plus after signing Cisse, Kewell and Finnan.

http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-fc/liverpool- fc-news/2007/11/23/rafa-benitez-s-transfer-history-10 0252-20150499/ ..... .... This is a link to a webpage that contains all of Rafas trabsfers up to Nov 2007, it totals 127.44milion out add to that the 26m he spent on torres and that adds up to 153.44m out, it also shows the amount back in of 51.2m that leaves a net spend of 102.24million pounds... and as they say in cricket " How is that"
It does include torres it was skirtels 6.5m it didnt include, so my original figures stand... out = 133.94m / in = 51.2m net spend of =82.74million
It seems my figures were out, that does not include the 18m recently paid for Mascheranas.

that your net spending is actually only £100 million, since rafa started well look at united since benitez came, 50 spent gross, sold smith rossi, howard, richardson and heinae (plus some youngsters) net spend 18 million, season before 16 million on carrick sold ruud and another guy who i cant remember for a net positive of 1.2 million and the year before evra and vidic for about 11 million so in the smae time as benitez about 35 million spent nett, we have won the premier league come runners up and look like winning it this season, we have also got to the championsl eague semi final, the fa cup final and won the carling cup, fact is benitez should be doing a lot better with the amount he has spent, and i am sick of listening to him say they cant compete with the big teams spending, the only club that has psent more in the last 3 years is chelsea, and they dont work with in the realms of a real business, that teams is a billionaires fantacy team,... some of his line up this season has been beyond belief and his signitures well rubbish, torres has been his best, but even i could of said that, some of the oter ones like babel dirk c*nt and voralin, well lets just say babel has not exactly sent the world on fire has he, scored less then nani and made twice the apperances this season, but i am sure some liverpool fanatic with there blinkers on will come on and tell me how i am talking rubbish and c*nt and babel are fantastic

takes the premier league serious when they need it to qualify for the champions league, he takes the easy route all the time, lets face it, liverpool a good enough to cream the bottom teams with there eyes closed. its 50 to 60 points garenteed every season, the top three a head and sholuders above them, and the there are 6 other teams which can give them a run for the money, but enough said they can qualify for the campions league. he relys on picking the club up for three or four games in the qualifiers and knows he he can win the last 16 and last 8 of the competition heis job will be safe because of the money he has brough tin, the fact is it sholud be noted that it is a joke that a team with players like reina gerrard, charrager, macherano, torres, babel etc etc are even worrying about 4th spot, i maen come on most its like grant with chelsea any idiot can be made to look good wit that squad of players the team runs it self, same wit liverpool he is a lazy sh*te just picks up the team for when he needs to and his managment skills are clear to see when he brings off key players at reading when they can still go for the win

to be a liverpool season ticket holder when i saw how benitez stuck up for macha, he ruined the game at liverpool, he was in the ears of the ref all through the first half i could see it happening, and he shames the club by trying to say that all he was doing was asking what happened what was he doing getting involved from thirty yards away, we kept it at one nil for 60 mins the difference was man u can bring on quality players like tevez and nani, who did we bring on, a defender when we were down.... we are a joke Y.N.W.A. runs though me and we could be in the 2nd division and i would still support the team but come on, how benitez handed the game at united when we have got all those players if a joke, god help us if we get them in the final, with out anfield to bring them back to

Craig, how many players currently in the Utd squad pre-summer 2004 were Utd players. The Utd rebuilding has been going on since 2003 since you won the last league title up till last season. Your win last season was culumation of what has occurred since 2003, Ferdinand, Giggs, Scholes, Ronaldo, Saha, Neville and built upon that group. Rafa has made some bad signings which haven't been too expensive. Morientes and possibly Kuyt some might say have been flops. If you look at his transfers since he arrived the quality signings he has bought in have been some bargains but Alonso, Babel and Torres have been the only signings over 10 million that shows the surroundings he can work in. The Utd board backed Fergie seriously when it comes to the crunch, would the Liverpool board back in 2004 would have gave Rafa the same amount of money to buy Rooney for example or a 30 million centre back no they wouldn't not even now becaused of the expensive nature of the stadium costs which is why DIC are sniffing around. This is what people miss the point here. In terms of winning the League Rafa's is on a shoestring budget which is why he has canvased for more money to invest with quality not quantity. His average spend will be shown in article due to be published by myself. You mentioned Voronin there, we picked up on a free so you get what you get.
Adam, you don't understand been a manager. Benitez is his manager of course he is going to back his own player don't be stupid and a player as crucial as Mascherano to Liverpool why would he lash out at him. Rafa is smart and knows the score sadluy you don't think outside the box with your comments.
Lafa is the second biggest spender in the prem and yet can only produce the just about 4th best team... Im not asking you to re-invent the wheel here, just understand he punches below his weight, with themoney hes had he should be challenging and your nowhere near it.
