Jimmy boy - you are obviously a passionate fan! Many would agree that Stevie G is a great player and an inspiration to many regardless of your points Liverpool would not be developing as a great club again without the likes of such great players like SG I love watching him play and think his off-the-field comments are usually balanced, tempered and sometimes heart felt. However he is only human and never going to keep everyone happy all of the time - as you have demonsrtated. Gerrard should not have said that. Gerrard, as a Liverpool captain, must always bear in his mind that Liverpool is the best club in the world and try the best in his power to keep it at that position.

In fairness, if Gerro isn't up for it we play badly, I think he has rather too much influence. We have all seen him drag his arse around the field on several occasions this season, and, he has made a good number of comments that I don't like to hear from a team member never mind our captain.

I can handle criticism of Gerrard, doesn't really bother me at all and he deserves it sometimes, but Kanwar's stuff is a cynical and blatent attempt to get hits by writing spitful crap. Stevo, you seem to be a late comer to the party. Jamie Kanwar has been spouting crap for the last year or so. Seriously mate if you look back you will see that he presents a ridiculously biased view of Gerrard at any opportunity. i.e 'Gerrard is an embarressment' 'Gerrard is a liability'. Get real. We wouldn't have won half of what we have over the past five years without Gerrard. My problem with Kanwar is that he never presents a balanced point of view. Read some of his previous articles. He has previously stated that Gerrard isn't good enough to play for Liverpool and damages the team performance when he plays. I just think it is a cynical attempt to get hits.

I agree with you 100% on Gerrard. The final straw with me came after that interview he did about a month ago with the LFC Magazine, a clear attempt, in my view, to undermine Rafa. I started a thread on This Is Anfield in the immediate aftermath of that asking if it is time for him to go. He has been inneffectual for nearly two whole seasons, has continually sulked, failed to back the manager, and soon enough, we will need the bigger new stadium just to have enough room for his ego. I think that interview was a 'come and get me' from Europe's biggest clubs, and, if so, let him go, while we can still get decent money for him. They're going to realise how overated he is one day.

I take it we are all Liverpool fans here and have all spent time thinking about why Liverpool have dissapointed again in the league this season. It just makes me laugh that some people seem happy to point the finger at Gerrard. Look at the simple facts, he has scored 19 goals this year, he's played centre midfield, right side, support up front and even right back over the past two or three seasons. They don't look at our lack of genuine quality out wide (right side especially) or the fact that we only have one decent goal scorer. He's an easy target because the press build him up. I think we're better off with him. As for him being outspoken, i'd rather have a straight talking captain like gerrard that a sheep like John Terry who just spouts the party line. Gerrard is his own man. Nothing wrong with that. No he isn't the best captain in the world but I can't think of anyone better at the club. And if you check out Kanwar's other stuff you'll see what I said about the author is true.

SG is a crucial player for Liverpool, but i agree that he is not the best of captains. However, who is perfect anyway. He's still young and still learning, and he better learns. If not, someone else will take over in time. But i suspect being a captain did a lot for his ego (not meant in the negative way as we all have egos), and helps him in his game. Tho' not all the times, as he seems to rather overwhelmed with emotions in big games, which can negatively affect his performance. Anyway, for now, to bring out the best in players, including himself, he's still the top choice.
