At this moment in time Liverpool are locked in a battle with city rivals Everton for fourth spot. Not the title battle many were hoping for this season. However, once again Rafa Benitez’s saving grace is the fact they are still in the Champions League and hold the edge over Arsenal in their quarter-final. Who would argue against Liverpool progressing to the semi-final in front of the Kop? Yet for all their success in Europe it is the league title that the Scousers yearn for more than anything. It has been almost 20 years since Liverpool claimed the title, an inexcusable length of time for a team who have won the league 18 times – a fact the fans know only to well. This summer will prove key to Rafa’s survival. He now has a highly impressive core to his side in Jamie Carragher, Javier Mascherano, Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres, and if he can build a team around these individuals successfully then surely the league title is a very real possibility.Firstly, Benitez will need to shift the dead wood at the club. The likes of Dirk Kuyt, Harry Kewell and Jermaine Pennant are not good enough for a team like Liverpool. It appears that Peter Crouch will also leave the club – a good move for a player who should be playing Premier League football week in, week out. He should have a long look at what Jermain Defoe has done – one thing is for sure, there will be no shortage of takers.‘... another quality striker must be purchased. Ajax’s Klaas Jan-Huntelaar is most certainly a man in demand and a move to Liverpool could be ideal for him.’All that remains is what players Benitez should invest in. As previously stated, the core of the team is impressive so no multi-million buys should have to be made. Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel look able enough to partner Carragher at the back, with the only real position of weakness being right-back. Schalke’s Rafinha has been put forward as a potential signing and if Sevilla fail to make Europe this season rumours surrounding Dani Alves will escalate immensely.Other signings will really depend on what system Benitez wants to play. Ideally, it would be a 4-3-3 similar to that which was endorsed by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, with Torres leading the line, flanked by Babel and one other. Ricardo Quaresma has been continuously linked with a move to Anfield but other options range from Aaron Lennon to Ronaldinho, both or who are probably available for transfer this summer. However, if Liverpool do offload several players another quality striker must be purchased. Ajax’s Klaas Jan-Huntelaar is most certainly a man in demand and a move to Liverpool could be ideal for him. There would be less pressure on him to score goals as he would not be the main man, and he could be eased into the season as opposed to being thrown in at the deep end.

LIVERPOOL have the right players and if benitez get more goal scorers into LIVERPOOL, I don't see why they can't win. Also with more goal scorers they can take on the likes on MAN U, chelsea and arsenal,

Well, I believe it is hard for Liverpool to win next season unless big investment is provided. However, the solution to the off field problem between co-owner need to be solved first. We do have a best striker at the moment, but we lack winger and full back. In fact, Crouch can be an ideal partner for Torres as one has blistering pace and lightning while the other one can win second ball. Play them together Rafa and see how it gels. If we don't invest for next season on winger then My formation is still 4-2-3-1 with Gerrard move to the right winger. Formation: Reina , Agger, Carragher, Finnan or Rafinha if we do buy him, Aurelio. Midfield defensive: Masscherano, Alonso. Winger: Babel and Gerrard. Striker: Crouch and Torres.

You say no multi million pound players should have to be made and then you mention several that would cost a fortune!! The facts are these. Liverpool need two fullbacks that can defend and get forward, at least one winger that can actually go past opponents to create space, a goalscorer to help out Torres and a manager whether it is Benitez or another that will play Gerrard in the middle of midfield and be more attack minded at least at Anfield where we don't need to play two holding midfielders. Saviola would be ideal for Torres and Drenthe or Heinze could fill the left back spot. Bentley preferable to Lennon and possibly Rafinha or Alves however both look like getting several bookings. Crouch can play with Torres with Gerrard moving back as Alonso is not needed when Macherano is available. However I doubt whether Benitez will ever change the defensive tactics and therefore i have more chance of winning the Lotto than he has of winning the PL.

The right players? A team that has Crouch, Pennant, Arbeloa, Kewell, Leto, Voronin, Kuyt, Reina and Babel are not a championship winning sides. Benitez is an absolute clown when signing players. Just get used to battling Everton for 4th place, you're a spent force. Im happy with the fact that it'll be many years before a trophy goes to anfield again. And kevin smith shut your mouth you dirty scouse rat

Rafa needs to rid the shite & bring in some TOP quallity players so that we can challenge for BOTH the premiership & champions league, not too bothered about the 2 domestic cups. What we need is a quallity back up keeper, 2 right backs, a left back, 2 right wingers, 2 left wingers & 2 forwards. WHY?, I'll tell you, starting with the back up keeper. We all know Intandje is SHIT, so get rid A.S.A.P & bring in Jaaskelanien on a Bosman. We need 2 right backs because Arbeloa is nothing more than an average squad player, whilst Finnan will be 32 at the start of next season, he's form has blown hot & cold & he's been quite injury prone this season. Bring in Bernard Mendy from P.S.G on a Bosman & sign Rafinha for £6m from Schalke. Left back, since returing from injury Aurelio has played quite well, whilst Riise has been poor whenever he's played & hasn't scored for us either, so it's time to ship him OUT. Apart from Wayne Bridge no other player really stands out, so I'm kinda stuck on this position. On the right wing, Pennant isn't good enough & should be sold, whilst Benayoun ISN'T a winger but a brilliant & underrated attacking midfielder. With Valencia only 3 points from the relegation zone Joaquin would make a BRILLIANT signing & Bentley would add serious competion to him for a starting place in the side. On the left, the less said about Kewell the better & Babel ISN'T a winger but a Henry style forward. With city floundering in 9th place I doubt a player of Petrov's quallity would want to hand around, PLUS Rafa will know all about from his days in La Liga. Plus with Reyes more than likely to leave Atletico in the summer a bid of around £6m should be enough to snap him up. I know Reyes was hot & cold at Arsenal, but with the huge Spanish influnce at Anfield he should settle in a real treat at the club, just remember Mascherano at West Ham. Upfront Kuyt, Crouch & definatly Voronin ARN'T GOOD ENOUGH. So get rid & bring in both Villa & Ronaldinho, easer said than done I know. Villa has stated he'll leave Valencia in the summer & Barcelona are looking more & more likely to get rid of Ronaldinho at a cut price fee. With them having Bojan, Messi, Eto'o, Henry & Gudjohnsen at the club It's MORE than likely he'll be moved on. Plus why would he want to play from a bunch of old has beens at A.C milan in a slow, boring, defensive league in seria A?

I (as a Liverpool fan) I would like to see Quaresma, Ronaldinho or Lennon come to Liverpool. I think if Liverpool sign Quaresma they may win the Premiership. I don't think Ronaldinho suits Liverpool that much and nor does Lennon. Bentley (I think) would fit in perfectly. I would love to see Hunterlaar at Liverpool, who is a better version of Crouch but I think it's unfair to Crouch because he's only got about 5 games this season and I think he's scored in all of them. But I think it's iminent that he's gonna go, so Hunterlaar would be good. I'd rather see Dani Alves than Rafinha at Liverpool as I think he fits better into the Liverpool team. This is my ideal Liverpool team. (Playing 4-1-3-2) GK: Reina, RB: Alves, CBs: Carragher, Hobbs, LB: Insua, CDM: Mascherano, RM: Quaresma, CM: Gerrard, LM: Babel, CFs: Hunterlaar, Torres. Bench: Martin (GK), Skrtel, Plessis, P.Anderson, Nemeth.

The club needs new owners and immediate investment to challenge for the league. However, the story might have been quite different this season if we had beaten ManU twice instead of losing twice. It is not a huge gap between ourselves and the top of the league. If Mr Benitez had the resources of Chelsea and ManU the title would inevitably end up at Anfield. However, we must face the realities, with no imminent ownership takeover there is no chance the club will be able to strengthen heavily over the summer. But if we strengthen our weakest positions we might have a chance next season, that is we avoid injuries to key players and avoid giving away silly points. I believe Benitez will spring a few surprises and bring in at least a couple of players we`ve hardly heard of before. I`m not too sure Rafinha is a target, this might well be a smoke-screen while we`re actually targeting other players. Alves seem to have a discipline problem and this is not something Benitez accepts. Bosingwa of Porto is stronger and more athletic than Rafinha and would prove a more sound option considering the physical nature of the premiership. Left back is also a problem area, as is right wing and to a certain extent the opposite wing. Considering our present formation I find it hard that Huntelaar would fit in. He would never accept playing second fiddle to Torres. Joaquin might be a useful addition. Quaresma have disciplinary problems and a huge ego while Lennon probably would be limited to home games while his slight physique may not suit the team away from home. Ronaldinho will not move to Anfield, that`s for sure. Still talented but no work ethos. Villa or Kaka would be dream signings playing in the hole behind Torres but then where would Gerrard play? And let`s face it, where would the money come from? We`ll have to wait and see. What we do need is stability and investment, more goal-scorers, more speed on the break and more depth. What we already have in abundance is fighting spirit, a strong core of players, promising youth players and a manager hell-bent on eradicating previous mistakes and continuing his red revolution. The train is a`rollin`...!
