Why Leeds United are the real League One champions
Starting a campaign on minus 15 points then losing your manager and assistant would be enough for most teams to throw in the towel. But the appointment of Gary McAllister has proved a master stroke by Ken Bates and the Leeds surge has come at just the right time.

Leeds United's excellent 2-0 away victory at Leyton Orient on Saturday saw Gary McAllister's side gatecrash the League One play-off party.
Paul Huntingdon's header gave the Whites the lead before Jermaine Beckford sealed the win with his 20th league goal of the season, the first United marksman to achieve the feat since Mark Viduka in 2003.Leeds have now gone an impressive six hours without conceding a goal, having accumulated 10 points from a possible 12 during that time. The club's league record this season stands at 23 wins, 10 draws and eight defeats - clearly the second-best record in the division. Without the 15-point deduction the Whites would be locked in a title battle with Swansea City. The Football League's persecution of the club meant that United were forced to start the current campaign with one foot in League Two. The season has seen the club suffer major upheaval, first after Gus Poyet jumped ship to join Spurs, and then when former boss Dennis Wise followed suit after realising he had no answers to an alarming slump in form.
Fortunately chairman Ken Bates swiftly appointed Leeds legend McAllister to breathe new life into a flagging season. Slowly but surely Macca has turned the ship around, and his side are hitting form at exactly the right time.Although the club have an upcoming arbitration hearing, it is extremely unlikely that our 15 points will be returned. So instead of going head-to-head for the title, United are jockeying for position in the play-offs. Should Leeds fail to gain promotion back to the Championship this season, the fact that the club are in with a shout at promotion at all is truly remarkable, given how events have conspired against them.
No side have ever escaped relegation after incurring a mere 10-point penalty - United's punishment was 50 per cent harsher.Whatever happens in the remaining few weeks, Leeds fans can be proud of the efforts of those privileged enough to wear the white shirt this season. If there's any justice, Leeds will be celebrating promotion at Wembley next month.

by bryn johnson on April 08, 2008
i don't want the points back i want us to make history the only side ever to stay up after a points deduction as well as the only side in history to win promotion with a 15 point deficit. we super Leeds and we're going up
by simon hughes on April 08, 2008
all this nonsense about will we get any points back should all be academic . football should be won and lost on the field . if leeds have done anything wrong they should be punished in a way that does not hurt the fans as much ie. fining or sacking guilty parties if there are any , and i'm not sure anyone is here. give football it's justice and promote leeds united. good article and fair !!!!!!!!!

Well done Leeds, its a real achievement that you'll be playing championship football next year. Who needs the premiership, champions league etc. And why would you care that you've got poor players, because you've reached the dizzying heights of the championship after all. Ha Ha im telling you it would be great if we drew you's in the FA cup next year, or even the Carling cup, let our academy players get a game lol
all your hangeron supporters( prawn sandwich) would not go anywhere near the theatre of clingons if you lot would swap places. you pinch all the best players. thanks for strach though, that was sweet but you probably were supporting another team back then, whatever your name is, mr prawn probably!!

Hey glory hunter, have you not heard of the saying, 'he who laughs last laughs longest' It's not that long since your lot were in the old 2nd division (although I expect that you did not know that). Ronaldo will be on his bike in the summer and Fergy will be hanging up his big purple snoz soon and then we will all take great pleasure in watching you slide down the league and your 'fans' will go back to supporting their local teams. (Southend, etc.)

Bless you "THE GREATEST", you clearly want us back otherwise why would you be filling your time reading articles about the Leeds? It really is true, we al love leeds & leeds & leeds...

Yout right. You have the greatest debt in world football How much is it now? Just wait till the wheels start falling off the banwaggon. Mark my words the points are coming back and we will go up as champions.

To be honest i dont care about any other fans and there views on us (good or bad). We are a football team so why do we get points deducted off the feild ? I hate the FA for this... Oh well we will be back sooner or lateter. Come on who would you prefer in the preimership derby (whooo ??) or LEEDS!!! 15 points who gives a *beep* ;) We're super Leeds And we're going up!!

The basis for deducting points from us was that we were in an enforced breach of the leagues CVA rules. We were in breach because of the leagues own regulations which state that football debts have to be repaid in full whilst other debts will be treated as "pence-in-the-pound" amounts. This is turn was caused by a legal challenge by the tax authorities on the matter. In a complete travesty of natural justice these points were not immediately returned to Leeds when HM Inspector of Taxes withdrew its case against the club. The whole thing was a settling of scores by the footballing authorities against Ken Bates and the fragments of hostility which still prevail against us for professionalising the game forty years ago. It is a complete farce and any fair hearing will give us back our points. I suspect the absence of transparency in the hearing will not result in the hoped for fairness and we'll get stitched as usual. The play-offs are a lottery and we may or may not prevail without our points back but in fairness this matter should have been settled by the league in Leeds' favour the minute the taxman withdrew its case. Now the teams which would be overtaken by us would have a perceived (though false) sense of injustice to have automatic promotion snatched away at the end of the season (if Leeds keep up the form of the last few games). Promotion for Leeds would be justice but we seldom see any of that. 1968 Cup semi final refereeing travesty 1970 Ridiculous end-of-season fixture congestion piled on us. 1971 The league title taken away from us by more farcical referring 1972 The league title taken away from us by having to play a decider on the Monday after the cup final which we had just won. 1973 The cup-winners-cup taken away by a referee proven to have taken money from Milan. To this day nobody can explain why Milan kept the trophy and it wasn't awarded to us? 1975 Cheated out of the European Cup by more decidedly suspicious refereeing. The French official never reffed another game and the whole thing stunk. 1999/2000 Forced to play the UEFA cup semi-final after two of our fans were murdered in Instanbul. Why were Galatasary not kicked out? 2007/08 See above

Any other club facing life for the first time in their history in League One with a 15 point deduction would NEVER have been able to do what Leeds United have managed this season. I wish the entire CLUB, right down to the tea ladies, all the very very best of luck claiming their points back and/or winning promotion, through the play offs if necessary. Go on LEEDS ! Who needs the Football League?
on April 09, 2008 on April 09, 2008
even if you had your points back you wouldn't be top, so what makes you think you would be champs. pure arrogance, typical leeds
by simon hughes on April 09, 2008
we have 5 games to go and would have 79 points with a realistic chance of winning the league with swansea self destructing at present. not arrogance just being honest and pragmatic. mot!!!!!!!
by Mike Holt on April 09, 2008
Apart from overcomming the -15 points lets not forget that we had players not knowing if they would get a contract with Leeds pre-season because of the dispute with HMIT. Whilst other teams had no distractions like this and could concentrate on getting ready for the season we were trying to hold on to players with promises and crossed fingers. The fact that we are clear of relegation and with every chance of securing a place in the play offs is a fantastic achievement by all including the best suporters a club could want (all 20,000+ for every home game!). Hopefully see you all at Wembley.

How many of the Man u so called supporters can give me the Man united captains name when they were relegated and when they went back up? 90% wont have a clue as they are pure hangers on, now we are having Chelsea hangers on as well. Everyone supports the glory team, there are more Man city supportes in Manchester than Man united. Sir Alex is a phenon. manager, but let's see what happens when he leaves and when (it will happen) Ronaldo leaves. Maybe the Glazers will flog u 2 Gillett or Hicks or Borzabulomonmanchelski.

What an effort from us this season overturning the 15 point deduction and still being in the playoffs. We need to fill elland road if indeed we make it to the play offs just like 2 years ago and show how intimidating ER can be on a match day. All those who think they support man u, you feel you have the right to slag leeds off the outside support for man u is huge as many will already know the majority of manchester support city and congrats for that. The 15 points would be a huge poost to be overturned and it must be said we deserve it, a -25 point deduction over 2 seasons for off the field matters. Bates and Risdale have hindered leeds' performance in the past years but come on you Mighty Whites, were super leeds and were going up.

I am very far from a hanger on muppet. And to answer your question it was Marty Buchan that was the captain then, Denis Law scored the goal that put us down. Just cause a few asians support us, cos we play great football, doesn't mean we're hangers on. Bottom line; Man UTD(not fuckin man *) top of table, second consecutive title, champions league semi-final at the Nou Camp- followed by beating the scousers at Moscow. Yorkshires farmers; the 'real' champs of league 1... LMAO
by Dai Bowden on April 14, 2008
I'm a Swansea fan, although I dispute the fact that you deserve to be champions, I certainly hope you get promoted this year. You sure deserve it (just like we do!) Good Luck!
by Stuart Meredith on April 23, 2008
Check your facts you muppet - Denis Law DID NOT score the goal that relegated you in the 70's ( what a season Leeds Champs and Scum relegated ). Its yet another scum myth that the scum loving media have popularised over the years. MUPPET.

..and if you fail to beat Barca and lose against Chelski they'll be crying in the streets of Surrey or wherever you lot come from

He does qualify as a true scum fan, when he should be in Barcelona he is watching corrie (to brush up on his fake manc accent) and killing time on the net while waiting to show his true colours from his armchair.
