The day Liverpool, Manchester United and West Brom strikers went missing in action
The number nine contrives to miss an open goal from one yard. No, we're not talking pub league, rather the human frailty of international stars. Go fetch the ball Martin Palermo, Ronny Rosenthal, Ryan Giggs and Kanu.

For most Europeans, April 8, 2008 will forever be etched into the memory as the night Liverpool overcame Arsenal in a Champions League classic.
The same feeling is not the case for South American fans, who on Tuesday witnessed one of the "worst misses ever" in the Copa Libertadores match between Atlas and Boca Juniors.
Step forward striker Martin Palermo, a legend at Boca, holding the all-time leading goalscoring record for the club after he recently overtook the 180-goal tally set by Francisco Varallo in the 1930s.
But Palermo is also famed for some of the worst mistakes in history, fuelling content for YouTube videos for those 20-second giggles before people have to get on with their lives.

Unbelivably I have been at two matches where an open goal was missed. The term open goal is used in the Rosenthal fashion as I was there and what most people forget that it was 0-0 at the time and within 5 minutes Mark Walters scored to put Liverpool 1-0 up they of course lost 4-2 but if Rocket Ronny had scored then maybe it would have been 2-0 and who knows? Similarly I was at Brandywell stadium on Monday night watching Derry City play Saint Patrick's Athletic in the Setanta Cup and Ciaran Martyn did a Ronny and after going past the keeper slammed the bar in front of an empty net from 10 yards. The difference in this tale, bar the fact that most of you will have no idea who Ciaran Martyn is, that Ciaran went on to score the opening goal in a comprehensive 2-0 Derry win, since this game was live on Setanta in Ireland you may very well see it in what happened next in Question of Sport soon.

I think almost any commentator outside of the 'big bore' would agree that however apalling Rosenthal's miss was that Kanu's was truly the worst. Having said that there was a truly appalling effort from Colin West for West Bromwich Albion against Manchester City that had to be seen to be believed where missed it, fell over and then tried to head it on the ground to no avail. I'm not certain there is any film coverage of that one though, pity, or then again maybe not...
