To buy or not to buy - Everton's enigma called Manny Fernandes
The Portuguese midfielder was an inspiration last year, but has looked lifeless this season. Now it's make-your-mind-up time for David Moyes.

The player that Evertonians saw last year, having the precocious temerity to embarrass Cesc Fabregas in the comfort of the Spaniard’s midfield home, as well as his glorious goal against Manchester United, has turned into a quiet and very unremarkable player this season. And soon we will have to decide whether to keep him or not.
Manny Fernandes is a player who often forages close to the defence for the ball, and who uses his skills in this risky part of the pitch to get past players and start moves. All this requires razor sharpness and confidence – two things he doesn’t seem to have right now.
Last season, he seemed to have the Midas touch, this season he has been like a footballing leper. He’s like Richard Gere’s eponymous character in Jack Somersby, a man who left his home town only to return as such an unrecognisable person that you begin to doubt his identity.
When Manny walked out on Everton in the close season, and jetted off to Valencia, where he promptly signed for the Spanish club, huge swathes of the Goodison faithful didn’t know whether to weep or riot. Questions fluttered around about the failed transfer, had it been the infamous Everton dithering or the mendacious ‘owners’ of Fernandes?

i hope moyes will buy him but not for the 12mil he's on offer for, maybe something like 5-6 mil might tempt everton, we need classy midfielders as well as strong holding midfielders, i would sell johnson as he his just too easily knocked off the ball, he can run fast but basically that's it

I know he hasn't performed anywhere near his standard of last season but we all know what he can do. Moyes could use his form to evertons advantage and get a cut price deal for a player who currently isnt setting the world alight. The fact is we know he has the talent and potential, he's only 22 and could become a world class talent. A good point pointed out in the article is that he needs sharpness to play his game and thats something that comes with playing in games, something he didnt do at valencia and has only just started doing at everton. If he gets his fitness and sharpness back then he could become just the player we need to finish our season with a bang.

Hi Ed. I think we're beginning to see the 'real' Manuel Fernandes again. He's obviously still not match fit but the pass for Osman's goal was nothing short of first class. I know that he needs to show more consistency and, barring that move, still seemed to go missing at various points of the match, but he seems to me to be a player that thrives on confidence. Moyes is well known for getting the best out of players and there's no denying the talent so imagine the player he could be when fully fit and with a full pre-season under his belt. I still baulk at the £12m asking price but if we could get him for around £8m I think we could have one of the best central midfielders in the league in a few seasons - a canny investment methinks! Maybe Moyes is reigning him in and there's an agreement to not look 'too good' in order to drive the price down? Okay, that's a ridiculous conspiracy theory but if that's how it does indeed work out it could be to Everton's advantage. He does owe us one after all...

Fernandes isn't a enigma he's just unfit and out of condition. Which is expected considering he's only started 6 games for us this season. If he was fit like he was last season he would be without doubt one of our best midfielders. The most talented player to grace an Everton shirt since Wayne Rooney. Buy him, get him fit and build a team around him. Class act.

I was absolutely gutted when we never managed to sign Fernandes last summer but from what I have seen so far this year we may have had a lucky escape, the money we would have spent on him went on The Yak and Jagielkla and he has'nt exactly given us anything since he has come back to make us regret not paying the 12m. I reckon if we could get the player we had last year he is well worth 7 or 8m otherwise stear well clear!

A quality player who simply isn't match fit sums it up. Even in his current condition he is capable of defence splitting balls or moments of class that demonstrate his ability and make him stand head and shoulders above those around him. He seems to be getting sharper with games and with that becoming more consistent. He's only young too. During the Derby game he lost (or almost lost) possesion a couple of times in the first ten minutes and the crowd got on his back, which was in no small part to the poor passes blasted at him when under pressure. If everyone gets behind him I'm sure we'll see some of last years Manny!

This could be a very good plan... he plays like sh*t so we get him on the cheap then he gets back to what he was doing last season saving us some money!
